What is the PCEP interview?

The PCEP interview is a police recruitment assessment used for candidates applying through the Police Constable Entry Programme. It usually tests whether the candidate can demonstrate the behaviours and values expected of a police constable under the College of Policing Competency and Values Framework (CVF). Strong answers normally use the STAR method, focus on what the candidate personally did, and show evidence of Respect and Empathy, Courage, and Public Service.

A strong PCEP interview answer should:

  • Answer the question directly
  • Use a real example
  • Follow STAR structure
  • Focus on "I" not "we"
  • Link clearly to a CVF value
  • Include a clear result
  • Explain what you learned

What is PCEP?

PCEP stands for Police Constable Entry Programme. It is a non-degree entry route into policing aimed at candidates who want to become police constables without completing a full degree apprenticeship.

  • Force-delivered professional training
  • No degree required (check force)
  • Operational policing focus
  • Still involves full assessment
Feature PCEP
Qualification Requirement Force-specific criteria.
Degree Required? Usually no, but check force rules.
Training Style Force-led professional training.
Interview Focus CVF values, judgement, motivation.
Assessment Type May include OAC, interview, or local stages.

Is there a PCEP interview?

Many PCEP candidates will face some form of structured interview, online assessment, video interview, competency interview or values-based interview depending on the force. The exact process varies, but the scoring logic is usually similar: candidates must show evidence of behaviours expected of a police constable.

Some forces may use the Online Assessment Centre (OAC), while others use a local interview or a blended process. Candidates should prepare for both video-recorded and in-person structured questions.

If you are unsure which your force uses, practise both in the simulator.

  • - Tell us about a time you treated someone fairly in a difficult moment.

Courage

  • - Tell us about a time you challenged inappropriate behaviour.
  • - Tell us about a time you made a difficult decision.

  • - What do you understand about the role of a constable?
  • - What challenges do you expect during training?
  • - How would you manage public scrutiny and shift work?

PCEP Assessment Questions

Not every PCEP assessment is a classic interview. Depending on your force, you may also face written responses, situational judgement tests, or briefing exercises.

Assessment Type What it Tests How to Prepare
Structured Interview CVF evidence. Prepare 6 STAR examples.
Video Interview Concise timed answers. 3-minute practice loops.
Briefing Exercise Decision-making. Explain your reasoning clearly.
Motivation Question Commitment & Realism. Research the local force role.

What CVF Values
Matter for PCEP?

PCEP candidates are assessed against Level 1 behaviours of the Competency and Values Framework.

Respect & Empathy

Focus on listening, dignity, fairness, recognizing vulnerability and adapting your style.

Courage

Focus on challenging poor behaviour, admitting mistakes and making difficult decisions with integrity.

Public Service

Focus on putting the public first, taking responsibility, and improving community outcomes.

Assessor Tip:

  • - Do not just say you are respectful. Show it through action.
  • - Do not just say you are brave. Show a decision you made.
  • - Do not just say you care. Show what you did for someone else.

How to answer PCEP
using the STAR Method

S: Situation

20-30s

Set the scene briefly.

T: Task

20-30s

Explain your responsibility.

A: Action

90-120s

Show what you personally did. The core of your marks.

R: Result

30-40s

Outcome and what you learned.

The most common PCEP mistake is spending too long on Situation and not enough time on Action.

Example PCEP
Interview Answer

Question: Tell us about a time you helped someone vulnerable.

Weak

"I worked in retail and a customer was upset, so we helped them and they were okay. We made sure they got what they needed."

Why it fails:

Too vague, says "we", no clear personal action, result or reflection.

Strong Structure

Situation: Brief context of setting.

Task: "My responsibility was to ensure..."

Action: "I noticed... I approached calmly... I asked open questions... I adapted my communication... I checked they understood..."

Result: "The person calmed down... I learned..."

Do not copy word-for-word. Use your own real story.

PCEP Interview
FAQs

What questions are asked in a PCEP interview?

PCEP interview questions are usually competency-based and values-based. They may ask about times you helped someone vulnerable, challenged poor behaviour, worked under pressure, took responsibility, adapted your communication or acted in the public interest.

How do I prepare for a PCEP interview?

Prepare by learning the CVF Level 1 values, choosing real examples, structuring each answer using STAR, practising out loud under timed conditions and checking that each answer includes personal action, a result and reflection.

Is the PCEP interview different from PCDA or DHEP?

The route is different, but the interview principles are often similar. PCEP candidates are still expected to show the behaviours, values and judgement required of a police constable. The exact assessment process varies by force.

Does PCEP use the Online Assessment Centre?

Some forces may use online assessment elements, while others may use local interviews or force-specific assessment stages. Candidates should check their force's official process and prepare for both online and in-person formats.

What CVF values are tested in PCEP interviews?

PCEP interviews commonly assess CVF Level 1 behaviours and values such as Respect and Empathy, Courage and Public Service. Candidates should prepare examples that clearly show these values in action.

How long should a PCEP interview answer be?

A strong practice answer is often around 3 minutes. The Situation and Task should be brief, the Action should be the longest part, and the Result should clearly explain the outcome and learning.

Can I use examples from outside work?

Yes. Candidates can use examples from education, volunteering, sport, caring responsibilities, community work or personal experience, as long as the example clearly shows the behaviour being assessed.

What is the biggest reason candidates fail PCEP interviews?

Common reasons include weak STAR structure, using 'we' instead of 'I', vague examples, no clear result, poor reflection and failing to link the answer to the CVF value being assessed.

Should I memorise PCEP interview answers?

No. Candidates should prepare flexible examples and practise structure rather than memorising scripts. Memorised answers can sound unnatural and may fail if the question is worded differently.

How can I practise PCEP interview questions?

Use timed practice, record your answers, review your STAR structure and check whether you clearly explain your personal action, result and learning. The PolicePay Mock Interview Simulator is designed for this type of practice.
