Your Journey to the Badge
The traditional "application form" days are gone. Here is the modern roadmap to joining the UK police service via the PEQF framework.
Check Your Eligibility
Ideally 18+ to be appointed. You can apply at 17 in some forces.
lived in the UK for the last 3 years (exceptions for armed forces).
No CCJs or unspent convictions. Some minor cautions may be accepted.
Level 3 (A-Levels) or equivalent experience for the apprenticeship route.
Choose Your Route (PEQF)
You don't just "join" anymore—you pick an entry programme based on your education level.
PCDA (Apprenticeship)
The most common route. You work full-time as an officer but spend ~20% of your time studying for a fully-funded degree in Professional Policing Practice.
- Takes 3 years
- Earn full salary from Day 1
- Tuition paid by force
DHEP (Degree Holder)
If you already have a degree (in anything from History to Biology). It's a 2-year conversion course. Intensive, but faster.
Pass the Tests
The Fitness Test (JRFT)
Level 5.4 on the bleep test. It sounds intimidating, but with a few weeks of couch-to-5k style training, most people pass easily.
Vetting (The Big One)
They check your finances (debt is okay if managed, CCJs are bad), your family's criminal history, and your social media. Honesty is mandatory. If you hide a minor issue, you will be rejected for integrity.
Medical & Biometrics
DNA sample, fingerprints, eyesight check, and heavy metal testing (hair sample) for drug usage.
