What is the PCDA interview?
The PCDA interview is a police recruitment assessment used for candidates applying through the Police Constable Degree Apprenticeship route. It usually tests whether the candidate can demonstrate the behaviours, values and judgement expected of a police constable under the College of Policing Competency and Values Framework. Because PCDA is also a degree apprenticeship, candidates should be ready to show motivation, resilience, communication skills, public service values and the ability to balance operational policing with academic study.
A strong PCDA interview answer should:
- Answer the question directly
- Use a real example
- Follow STAR structure
- Focus on personal actions
- Link clearly to a CVF value
- Show resilience and learning
- Include a clear result
- Show study readiness

What is PCDA?
PCDA stands for Police Constable Degree Apprenticeship. It is an entry route into policing where candidates train as police officers while also completing a degree-level apprenticeship. Candidates are employed as student officers and combine operational training, academic learning, assessment, portfolio work and practical policing.
It is not simply a university course. It is a demanding combination of work, study and professional development that requires high levels of organisation and resilience.

| Degree Required Before? | No (you earn it during training). |

| Interview Focus | CVF values, judgement, resilience, motivation. |
Is there a PCDA interview?
Many PCDA candidates will face some form of structured interview, online assessment, video interview, competency interview or values-based interview depending on the force. The exact process varies, but the scoring logic is usually similar: candidates must show evidence of behaviours expected of a police constable and demonstrate they understand the demands of a degree apprenticeship.
Some forces may use the Online Assessment Centre (OAC), while others use a local interview or a blended process. PCDA candidates may also face specific questions about their readiness for degree-level study.
If you are unsure which your force uses, practise both in the simulator.

Example PCDA
Interview Answer
Question: Tell us about a time you managed competing deadlines.
"I had lots of college work and a part-time job, so I just worked hard and got everything done on time. It was stressful but I sorted it."
Why it fails:
Too vague, no clear planning method, no reflection, doesn't show PCDA readiness.
Situation: Brief context of busy period.
Task: "My role was to maintain standards while..."
Action: "I listed deadlines... I prioritised urgent work... I spoke to my manager early... I created a realistic plan... I reviewed daily..."
Result: "Submitted on time... learned how to manage pressure... ready for PCDA demand."
How to answer PCDA
Academic Readiness Questions
Because PCDA includes degree-level study, forces need reassurance that you can manage assignments, deadlines and academic feedback while developing operationally.
What to Show:
- - Planning early & breaking work down
- - Accepting & acting on feedback
- - Managing competing priorities
- - Asking for help before problems escalate
- - Resilience under dual pressure
"I plan early... I reflect and improve... I balance work and study."

PCDA Interview
FAQs
What questions are asked in a PCDA interview?
PCDA interview questions are usually competency-based, values-based and motivation-based. They may ask about times you helped someone vulnerable, challenged poor behaviour, worked under pressure, took responsibility, adapted your communication, managed deadlines or learned from feedback.
How do I prepare for a PCDA interview?
Prepare by learning the CVF Level 1 values, understanding the PCDA route, choosing real examples, structuring each answer using STAR, practising out loud under timed conditions and checking that each answer includes personal action, a result and reflection.
Is the PCDA interview different from PCEP?
The core police interview principles are similar, but PCDA candidates should also be ready to discuss the demands of a degree apprenticeship. This includes balancing operational policing with academic study, deadlines, feedback and professional development.
Does PCDA use the Online Assessment Centre?
Some forces may use online assessment elements, while others may use local interviews or force-specific assessment stages. Candidates should check their force's official process and prepare for both online and in-person formats.
What CVF values are tested in PCDA interviews?
PCDA interviews commonly assess CVF Level 1 behaviours and values such as Respect and Empathy, Courage and Public Service. Candidates should also prepare examples that show resilience, learning ability and readiness for degree-level study.
How long should a PCDA interview answer be?
A strong practice answer is often around 3 minutes. The Situation and Task should be brief, the Action should be the longest part, and the Result should clearly explain the outcome and learning.
Can I use examples from school, college or university?
Yes. PCDA candidates can use examples from education, work, volunteering, sport, caring responsibilities or community experience, as long as the example clearly shows the behaviour being assessed.
What is the biggest reason candidates fail PCDA interviews?
Common reasons include weak STAR structure, using 'we' instead of 'I', vague examples, no clear result, poor reflection, poor understanding of the PCDA route and failing to link the answer to the CVF value being assessed.
Should I memorise PCDA interview answers?
No. Candidates should prepare flexible examples and practise structure rather than memorising scripts. Memorised answers can sound unnatural and may fail if the question is worded differently.
How can I practise PCDA interview questions?
Use timed practice, record your answers, review your STAR structure and check whether you clearly explain your personal action, result and learning. The PolicePay Mock Interview Simulator is designed for this type of practice.
