The Short Answer

Expect the process to take 6 months minimum. If you apply today, you likely won't be in uniform until half a year from now. Do NOT hand in your notice at your current job until you have a confirmed "Unconditional Offer" and start date.

Where Delays Happen

The Vetting Black Hole

Vetting is out of the force's control (often done by external units like VSA). If you forget to declare a speeding ticket or an aunt's caution, your file goes to the "Query Pile," adding weeks to the timeline.

📅 Intake Tetris

Even if you pass everything in 3 months, there may only be training school places available in 6 months. You will be placed in a "holding pool."

Financial Reality Check

Many recruits get caught out by the "First Month Gap".

  • 1. Quit old job (Paid up to date)
  • 2. Start Police (Day 1)
  • 3. Work 4 weeks
  • 4. FIRST PAY DAY (End of Month 1)

Frequently Asked Questions

When is the best time to apply?

Now. Police recruitment is notoriously slow. Even if you aren't perfectly ready, getting your application in starts the clock. You can often defer your start date if needed.

Can I apply before I finish university?

Yes, final year students are encouraged to apply. Ideally, time it so your vetting clears just as you graduate, minimizing the gap between study and earning.

How long does vetting take?

It varies wildly. Standard vetting takes 4-8 weeks. However, if you have lived abroad or have complex family history, it can take 6 months+.

Do I get paid during training?

Yes. You are a paid employee from Day 1. However, your first paycheck usually arrives at the end of your first full month, so you may wait 5-6 weeks for cash.

What is the 'Intake' system?

Forces don't hire individuals one by one; they hire in cohorts (intakes) of 20-100 people. If you miss the March intake date, you might have to wait until June or September.

Can I speed up the process?

Not really, but you can avoid slowing it down. Return every form immediately. Disclose every medical issue and debt upfront to avoid 'queries' bouncing back and forth.
