Career Suitability

Policing isn't just a job, it's a lifestyle. Explore if it fits yours.

Question 1 of 50% Complete

How do you handle conflict?

Note: Honest answers give the best results. No one sees this but you.

The Short Answer

Suitability relies on three pillars: Resilience (handling trauma/stress), Integrity (being honest at all costs), and Adaptability (working shifts and facing the unknown). If you crave routine or struggle with confrontation, it may not be for you.

The Reality Check

🌙 "The Shift Lag"

You will miss birthdays, Christmases, and weekends. You will be awake when your friends are asleep. Shift work physically and mentally drains you. It is the number one reason officers resign early.

⚖️ Scrutiny

You are never "off duty". Your social media, your friends, and your conduct in the pub are all subject to professional standards. You live in a fishbowl.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to work nights?

Yes. As a PC on a response team, you will work a 24/7 shift pattern, including nights, weekends, and bank holidays. It is non-negotiable for most new joiners.

Is it dangerous?

Policing carries inherent risks. You will face confrontation, aggression, and potentially violence. However, you are trained, equipped (PPE/Taser), and supported by colleagues.

Can I choose where I work?

You can request a specific borough or division, but operational need comes first. You will go where the force needs you.

What if I have a criminal record?

It depends. Minor offences might be accepted if declared honest. Serious offences, or those involving dishonesty (theft/fraud), usually result in automatic rejection.

Is there a lot of paperwork?

Yes. Modern policing involves significant case file preparation, statement taking, and data entry. It is roughly 40-50% of the job.

Can I join if I have tattoos?

Usually yes, provided they are not on your face/neck and are not offensive (sexist, racist, violent). You may be asked to cover visible tattoos.
