Police Pension Exit Report

What you keep if you resign, retire or are dismissed

Put in your scheme, service, age and pay. You get the pension you have built up, when each part can be paid and what staying on would add, free. The full report compares every outcome side by side, with lump sums, the rules for dismissal and forfeiture in your scheme, and a checklist.

Leaving on medical grounds?

This report covers resigning, retiring and dismissal. If you may be retired on ill-health grounds, or were injured on duty, these free tools cover the rest of the decision. Speak to your Federation representative before deciding anything.

What it does, and what it does not

It does
  • Work out the pension built up in the 1987 or 2006 legacy scheme and the 2015 career-average scheme, using the same engine as our main pension calculator.
  • Apply the regulations on when each part is payable, including the 25 and 30 year tests in the 1987 scheme and the 55 and 65 rules in the 2006 scheme.
  • Value the McCloud remedy years both ways and use the better one.
  • Show what dismissal does and does not do to your pension, and the forfeiture steps, from the regulations and Home Office guidance.
It does not
  • Predict the outcome of a misconduct case or tell you whether to resign, retire or contest it. That is for your Federation representative or a solicitor.
  • Replace your administrator's quote. Their figure is the one that counts; the optional statement box aligns this report to it.
  • Cover tax in detail, the state pension, an injury award or a transfer out. It shows pension before tax, in today's money.
  • Store anything you type. The calculation runs in your browser and your figures never leave it.

Common questions

Do I lose my police pension if I am dismissed?

Not by being dismissed. Dismissal, even for gross misconduct, does not take away the pension you have built up. Forfeiture under the scheme rules needs a criminal conviction: regulation 211 of the 2015 Regulations, regulation 55 of the 2006 Regulations and regulation K5 of the 1987 Regulations. A misconduct finding, dismissal, resignation or a place on the barred list is not, on its own, a ground for forfeiture.

Is my pension the same if I resign, retire or am dismissed?

The amount built up to the day you leave is the same. What can differ is when each part can be paid, and the specific scheme rules for dismissed officers. The report shows the amount and the payment dates for your scheme, age and service, and the rules text for dismissal on its own tab.

When can I claim my pension if I leave before retirement age?

It depends on your scheme. In the 2015 scheme an active member who has reached 55 with at least two years' qualifying service can claim a reduced pension (reduced before 60); under 55 you become a deferred member and the pension is payable at State Pension age, or from 55 with a reduction. In the 2006 scheme leaving at 55 or over is treated as retirement; before 55 a deferred pension is payable at 65, or from 55 with an actuarial reduction. In the 1987 scheme 30 years' service gives a pension at any age and 25 years from age 50; otherwise it is deferred. The report applies these rules to your own figures.

What is the maximum forfeiture of a police pension?

The Home Office police pension forfeiture guidance says case law caps forfeiture at 65%, the employer-funded share. Forfeiture needs a criminal conviction for an offence connected with police service, a decision by the pension supervising authority, and a certificate from the Home Secretary (or a minister). It is not automatic. If you tick the conviction box in the optional section, the report shows 65% of your pension as the most that could be at risk.

How does the McCloud remedy affect these figures?

If you were in the scheme on or before 31 March 2012, your service from 1 April 2015 to 31 March 2022 is treated as legacy-scheme service, and you choose at retirement between legacy and 2015 scheme benefits for that period. The report values both and uses whichever is worth more, which is what a sensible choice would do. Your administrator's remediable service statement gives the exact position.

Are these figures guaranteed?

No. They are estimates in today's money from the scheme rules and the Government Actuary's Department factors. The report assumes each past year was earned at your current pay in real terms; enter the pension from your latest benefit statement in the optional box and every figure is rescaled to it. Your pension administrator's quote is the figure that counts.

What does one more year of service add to my pension?

In the 2015 scheme each year adds one 55.3rd of that year's pensionable pay, revalued each year while you serve. In the 1987 scheme the first 20 years each add a 60th of final pensionable pay and years 21 to 30 add a 30th. In the 2006 scheme each year adds a 70th. The report works out the actual pounds for your numbers on the What each year is worth tab.

Does the report give legal advice about my misconduct case?

No. It shows what the pension rules say and what your pension is worth under each outcome. It does not predict the outcome of any hearing or tell you whether to resign, retire or contest a case. Talk to your Federation representative or a solicitor about that.

Is anything I enter stored?

No. The calculation runs in your browser and nothing you type is saved or sent to our servers. Our analytics record only that the tool was used and which scheme you picked, not your figures. Buying the report records your purchase and email address for access, nothing about your pension inputs.
