Police Scotland Salary Calculator

What you actually take home, after Scottish tax

Police Scotland runs its own pay scales and its own negotiation structure, and Scottish officers are taxed under Scottish income tax rather than the rates used in England and Wales. A generic UK salary calculator gets both of those wrong. This one does not.

Estimate only. Based on Police Scotland federated rank scales effective 1 April 2026 and Scottish income tax rates for 2026/27. National Insurance is reserved to the UK Parliament and is the same across the UK. The island allowance is shown at a representative rate and varies locally. Your payslip can differ because of your tax code, student loan deductions, additional allowances and local payroll treatment.

Why Scottish take-home pay is different

Two things separate a Police Scotland payslip from an English or Welsh one. The first is the pay scale itself: Scotland negotiates through its own arrangements, starts constables higher, and runs the constable scale over twelve pay points rather than eight — a higher ceiling reached more slowly.

The second is tax. Income tax is devolved, and Scotland uses six bands where the rest of the UK uses three. At the bottom the starter rate of 19% makes Scottish taxpayers marginally better off. The picture reverses higher up: the Scottish higher rate is 42% and begins at £44,261, while in England the 40% rate does not begin until £50,271. A sergeant or inspector therefore pays noticeably more income tax on the same gross salary than an English colleague on the same money.

National Insurance is not devolved and is identical across the UK, as are the personal allowance rules. The calculator applies all three correctly and shows the difference in pounds per month.

A higher salary that pays less

A sergeant at the top of the Police Scotland scale earns £61,036, which is £2,861 more than a sergeant at the top of the non-London England and Wales scale on £58,175. After deductions the Scottish sergeant takes home £18 less per month.

Two things cause it. Scottish income tax charges 42% from £44,261 where the rest of the UK charges 40% from £50,271. And the higher Scottish gross crosses a pension contribution threshold, lifting the contribution rate on the whole salary. It is the clearest illustration of why comparing gross pay across the border tells you very little.

Common questions

What is the starting salary for Police Scotland in 2026?

A newly recruited Police Scotland constable starts on £34,001, effective 1 April 2026. That is higher than the England and Wales constable entry point, though the Scottish scale runs over twelve pay points rather than eight.

Do Police Scotland officers pay more tax?

Scottish taxpayers pay Scottish income tax, which uses six bands rather than three. Lower earners pay marginally less than the rest of the UK, but the Scottish higher rate of 42% starts at £44,261 compared with £50,271 in England, so most officers above constable entry level pay more overall. National Insurance is reserved to the UK Parliament and is identical across the UK.

How long does it take to reach the top of the Police Scotland constable scale?

Eleven years of completed service. Officers move up one pay point each year on their service anniversary, subject to satisfactory performance, from £34,001 at commencement to £54,597 at pay point 11.

Can Police Scotland officers claim overtime?

Constables and sergeants can claim overtime. Casual shift extensions are paid at time and a third, with higher rates for rest day working depending on notice given. Inspectors and above are salaried and cannot claim routine overtime.

How does Police Scotland pay compare with England and Wales?

Scottish basic scales start higher and reach higher maximums at every federated rank. The trade-off is a longer progression path, no London or south-east allowances, and Scottish income tax rates that take more from higher earners. The calculator shows the gross and net figures side by side.

Is the island allowance included?

It can be toggled on. The allowance recognises the additional cost of serving in island communities and is shown at a representative rate — the exact figure is set locally and can vary.
