Short answer: how is Police Scotland different for officers?

Police Scotland pay is agreed through the PNBS and approved by Scottish Ministers. Constables earn £34,001 to £54,597 from 1 April 2026. Officers build pension at 1/56.1 in the Scottish 2015 scheme with a flat 13.7% contribution, are taxed under Scottish income tax if they live in Scotland, get 28 to 39 days' leave and are promoted to sergeant through the qualifying diploma or the PLDP rather than an exam.

What is different from England and Wales

  • Pay route: PNBS and Scottish Ministers, not the PRRB and the Home Office.
  • Pension: 1/56.1 and a flat 13.7%, run by SPPA.
  • Tax: Scottish income tax, with a 42% band from £43,663 of taxable pay.
  • Overtime: PNBS hourly formula, 8 and 18 day rest day bands, no unpaid first 30 minutes.
  • Promotion: no written exam.
  • Allowances: no regional weighting; an Islands Allowance instead.

What we corrected in October 2026

Our earlier figures for Scottish officers
  • Several of our tools worked out the Scottish 2015 pension at the England and Wales 1/55.3; they now use 1/56.1 (about 1.4% less pension a year).
  • Our overtime calculator's Scotland mode used 2025/26 tax bands, put some constables in the 42% band before taking off pension and used England and Wales rest day presets. All fixed.
  • Our Police Scotland salary calculator divided by 1,930 hours instead of the PNBS formula (overstating overtime by about 8%), took pension off overtime and used one island rate. All fixed.
  • Pages that said Scottish pay was negotiated through the Scottish Police Authority, that Scotland had its own promotion exams or that the island allowance was set locally now say what the sources say.

Police Scotland staff

These guides are for police officers. We have not found a published Police Scotland staff pay scale to build a staff guide on: the only sourced staff figures we hold are starting salaries on live vacancies (for example Grade 1 £29,577 and Grade 7 £51,637 on 22 October 2026), which are not a full scale.

Quick answers

Frequently Asked Questions

Who sets Police Scotland officers' pay?

The Official and Staff Sides of the Police Negotiating Board for Scotland (PNBS) agree it, Scottish Ministers approve it and the Scottish Police Authority implements it. The England and Wales Police Remuneration Review Body has no role.

How much does a Police Scotland constable earn in 2026?

£34,001 on joining, £36,995 after one year and £54,597 at the top of the scale after 11 years, from 1 April 2026 (PNBS Circular 2026/01).

Is the Police Scotland pension the same as England's?

No. The Police Pension Scheme (Scotland) 2015 builds 1/56.1 a year with a flat 13.7% contribution, run by SPPA. England and Wales builds 1/55.3 with tiered contributions. Pension age (60) is the same.

Do Police Scotland officers get overtime?

Constables and sergeants do: time and a third, plus rest day and public holiday rates under the PNBS handbook. Inspecting ranks are paid for public holidays but not overtime.

Does PolicePay sell a Police Scotland pension report?

No. Our paid pension tools model the England and Wales schemes, so we do not offer them to Scottish officers. The Police Scotland pension and overtime calculators here are free.

Where do Police Scotland applicants start?

Our separate Join Police Scotland hub covers eligibility, the PSET entrance test, the 5.4 fitness test, the assessment day and training.
