NIE Exam Dates
2026 (and 2027)

The National Investigators' Exam runs four times in 2026. Each sitting is a single day, any time 8am to 8pm, booked through AIMS by your force's NIE liaison contact. This page lists every date the College of Policing has published for 2026, the deadlines around each one, and what is and is not known about 2027.

Short answer: when is the NIE in 2026?

Wed, 4 March, Tue, 2 June, Tue, 8 September, Tue, 17 November 2026, each 8am to 8pm. For the last one, Tuesday, 17 November 2026, registration closes at 6pm on Wednesday, 21 October 2026 (your force may close earlier) and results are due by Tuesday, 8 December 2026. No 2027 dates had been published by 11 October 2026.

NIE dates at a glance

All 2026 dates are from the College of Policing's NIE candidate handbook 2026, which "supersedes all previously published candidate handbooks". Dates on this page are UK time.

Status as at 11 October 2026: the March, June and September sittings have taken place and their results are out; registration for November is open until 6pm on Wednesday, 21 October 2026.

Every 2026 sitting is a Tuesday except March, which is a Wednesday. Registration always closes on a Wednesday at 6pm. The College says plainly that "there is no facility to offer alternative times or dates", so if a date does not work for you, the answer is a later sitting, not a different day.

Which law is examined

All four 2026 sittings examine the Blackstone's Police Investigators' Manual 2026 (Oxford University Press), parts 1 to 4. The handbook says the syllabus is "only contained within" the 2026 edition and candidates are examined on the law "only as it appears" in it. The Manual edition guide explains what changes when the 2027 edition arrives.

The Tuesday, 17 November 2026 sitting

The last sitting of 2026 is the one most readers of this page are aiming at. The key dates, in order:

  • Wednesday, 16 September 2026: registration opened in AIMS.
  • 6pm, Wednesday, 21 October 2026: College deadline for forces to verify and allocate candidates. Your force's own deadline may be earlier. Reasonable adjustment evidence is also due to your force by this date.
  • Tuesday, 3 November 2026: two weeks before. From here your force is charged for you whether or not you sit, so withdraw before this if you are going to.
  • About a week before: the familiarisation exercise link arrives by email. You can open it once, and it stays available until 7pm on exam day.
  • A few days before: the exam URL and log-in details arrive. If you do not have them the day before, contact your NIE liaison contact.
  • Tuesday, 17 November 2026, 8am to 8pm: the exam. 80 questions, 120 minutes, one sitting.
  • 8pm, Friday 20 Nov 2026: deadline for reporting an unscheduled incident or a question query (three days after the exam).
  • Tuesday, 8 December 2026: results and feedback reports through AIMS.

From Thursday, 22 October 2026 to the exam is 27 days. If you register late in the window and start revising then, that is about 3 weeks, well short of the 14 weeks the handbook recommends. The revision plan guide has a short-runway plan for exactly this.

How registration works

  1. Be eligible. The NIE is open to warranted officers, police staff investigators and people in other investigative bodies who have been selected as potential PIP2 students. You must be able to show current competence at PIP level 1, and it is your force or organisation's job to evidence that.
  2. Get the link. Your force or organisation's NIE liaison contact sends the AIMS registration link when the window opens. Candidates are told not to contact the College's exams team directly.
  3. Register once, carefully. Enter your details exactly. Your name, date of birth, national insurance number and email address are used to release your result, and a mistake delays it. Do not register twice; it creates duplicate entries.
  4. Keep proof. You should get a confirmation email. The handbook advises a screenshot of the confirmation page in case the email does not arrive.
  5. Force verification. Your force or organisation verifies eligibility and allocates you to the sitting by the College's closing date.
  6. Special cases. On a career break, suspended, unfit for work or on limited duties, or abroad on deployment? Each needs approval or evidence through your liaison contact: career breaks by the closing date, crime training manager sign-off if suspended, and a force medical examiner's certificate of fitness at registration if you are unfit or on limited duties.

Late registrations "will only be considered if exceptional circumstances can be proven", and the handbook says a heavy workload or being unaware of the registration period will not count.

Lead times: how the dates fit together

The handbook gives the dates; the gaps between them are what matter for planning. Fourteen weeks before each sitting is shown because the handbook recommends "a minimum of 14 weeks" of independent study.

Two things stand out. Registration closes about four weeks before each exam, so the decision to sit comes after most of your revision should already be under way. And results arrive about three weeks after the exam: September 2026 results were due on Tuesday, 29 September 2026, about three weeks before November registration closed on Wednesday, 21 October 2026. A quick resit is possible, but only if you decide fast. If you might need a resit after November, check the 2027 windows as soon as they are published.

Working back from Tuesday, 17 November 2026

A simple backwards plan for the November sitting, built on the handbook's 14-week recommendation and the dates above. The dates are arithmetic; the suggested focus is ours. If you are starting late, compress the early rows rather than skipping the timed mocks at the end. The revision plan guide has full 4, 8 and 12 week versions.

Registration windows by year

The windows move by a few days each year but follow the same shape, which helps if you are planning a 2027 attempt before its dates are out.

Force deadlines can be earlier than the College's

The College's closing date is the last possible date, not your date

The handbook says the published closing dates "are the final dates for registrations to be verified and allocated by forces" and that "forces and organisations may have earlier closing dates that candidates need to register by". You must register within the timeframe your NIE liaison contact sets.

We have not collected force-by-force deadlines, and they can change each sitting. In practice: ask your NIE liaison contact, crime training team or PIP2 coordinator for your force's internal date as soon as a window opens, and register early in the window rather than late. If your force runs a selection or approval step before registration (for example, line manager or detective inspector sign-off), build that time in too.

Reasonable adjustments and accommodations: the dates

If you have a disability under the Equality Act 2010, including a neurodivergence such as dyslexia, you can apply for reasonable adjustments. Short-term conditions may qualify for an accommodation instead. The timing rules:

  • Tell your NIE liaison contact you intend to request an adjustment when you register. Ticking the box in AIMS is not a formal request.
  • Send the request form and a specialist report with a diagnosis and recommendations to your force no later than the registration closing date: March Wed, 4 Feb 2026; June Wed, 6 May 2026; September Wed, 12 Aug 2026; November Wed, 21 Oct 2026.
  • Late applications may limit what the College can offer.
  • You sign an agreement form before the adjustment is applied, and should check it works on the familiarisation exercise.
  • If you are re-sitting with the same adjustment, you may not need fresh evidence, but you still need to notify and submit a request form.
  • Pregnant officers, and officers on non-compulsory maternity or on paternity leave, may sit and may be able to get accommodations; apply as early as practicable.

The week before the exam

  • System check. Run the College's device and browser check well before the day. Device and local connection problems are not grounds for special consideration.
  • Familiarisation exercise. About a week before, you are emailed a link. You can access it once, and it closes at 7pm on exam day. The College strongly advises doing it even if you have sat a College exam before. If you have a reasonable adjustment, check it is applied here.
  • Exam link. A few days before, you receive the URL and log-in details. No link by the day before: contact your liaison contact.
  • Plan your slot. You can start any time 8am to 8pm, but the 120-minute exam must be done in one go and the timer cannot be paused. Pick a time and place you control.

The exam day rules guide covers the rules in full, including the ban on AI tools and on discussing questions or topic areas afterwards.

Reports of unscheduled incidents (disruptions outside your control) go by email to the College's exams investigator address, copying your NIE liaison contact. Question queries about a question's legal accuracy or fairness have the same three-day limit. Your NIE liaison officer can see the full results list in AIMS within three weeks, and you get a link to your own feedback report. Keep it: the College cannot reissue it.

A pass is valid for three years less one day from the date you sat. The validity column applies that rule to each date; it is our arithmetic, so confirm your own expiry with your force. More on reading the report in the results day guide.

Withdrawing, missing the exam and charges

  • If you want to withdraw after registering, tell your NIE liaison contact immediately, with your reason.
  • A withdrawn candidate cannot be swapped for someone unregistered, and once withdrawn you cannot be re-entered for that sitting.
  • You are not automatically entered for the next sitting; you register again in the usual way.
  • Forces are charged for all candidates registered two weeks before the exam, and for all absent candidates, including those who withdraw within two weeks of the exam date.
  • If you are ill on the day, sitting is your choice. The College cannot offer an alternative date, and illness is not grounds for special consideration.

The handbook does not set a fee for candidates. Whether a force recovers any cost from a candidate who withdraws late or does not attend is a local matter; ask before you register if it worries you.

Results days, 2025 and 2026

The handbook promises results within three weeks and names a date for each sitting. In 2025 and 2026 that date has been exactly three weeks after the exam, on the same weekday (a Wednesday for March 2026, a Tuesday for every other sitting).

NIE exam dates 2027: what is known

Not published yet

When we checked on 11 October 2026, the College had not published 2027 NIE dates, and we could not find a 2027 candidate handbook on its site. Any 2027 date you see elsewhere before the handbook appears is a guess.

What we can say, and how sure we are:

  • Where they will appear (fact): each year's dates have been published in that year's candidate handbook, which "supersedes all previously published candidate handbooks", and on the College's NIE page.
  • When (inference): the 2024 handbook PDF was created on 26 October 2023, the 2025 handbook on 4 November 2024 and the 2026 handbook on 13 October 2025 (posted in November 2025). If the College follows the same rhythm, the 2027 handbook and dates would appear around October or November 2026. That is our reading of the pattern, not a College statement.
  • How many (inference): every year from 2022 to 2026 had four sittings, in March, June, September and November. We would expect the same, but the College has not said so.
  • Which Manual (not yet known): The 2027 Manual and Workbook and the 2027 Q&A are listed by booksellers for November 2026 (pre-publication). Which edition the 2027 sittings examine will be set by the 2027 handbook.

Nearly every sitting is a Tuesday in the first half of the month for March, June and September, and later in the month for November. Registration windows in 2024, 2025 and 2026 opened in early to mid January, early April, early to mid July and mid September, always closed at 6pm on a Wednesday, and closed about four weeks before each exam.

Planning a 2027 attempt before the dates are out

If you are not sitting in November, or you might need a resit, you can still plan sensibly while the 2027 handbook is awaited:

  1. Assume a March sitting with a January window, but confirm it. Every year from 2022 to 2026 had a March sitting, with registration opening in early to mid January. That is a pattern, not a promise.
  2. Check the Manual edition first. A new edition changes what you buy and study. The 2027 handbook will say which edition 2027 sittings examine; until then, do not assume.
  3. Start on the stable core. Mens rea, actus reus, PACE and the Codes, disclosure and the main offences change slowly. Time spent on them is rarely wasted, whatever the edition.
  4. Talk to your force about resit policy and support now rather than after results, especially on a direct entry route.
  5. Get the dates when they land. Use the email box above, or check the College's NIE page from October 2026.

Scenarios

Illustrative examples, not real candidates.

1. The late starter A trainee investigator is told in mid October to sit in November. Registration closes at 6pm on Wednesday, 21 October 2026, perhaps earlier in their force, so registering comes first. With about five weeks left, they follow a compressed plan weighted to Part 1 of the Manual and do timed practice every week.
2. The shift clash A candidate is on nights the day before Tuesday, 17 November 2026. The College offers no alternative dates, but the window runs 8am to 8pm. They sleep, then sit in the afternoon, leaving the last two hours of the window as a buffer. Or they ask their supervisor about a rest day well in advance.
3. The withdrawal A candidate's circumstances change three weeks before the exam. Withdrawing now, through the liaison contact and before the two-week point, avoids the force being charged. They will need to register again for a 2027 sitting.
4. Planning for a resit A candidate fails in November with results on Tuesday, 8 December 2026. Their next chance is the first 2027 sitting, but its dates are not yet published. They sign up for the 2027 dates alert, ask their force about its resit policy, and use the feedback report to target weak parts.

Common myths about NIE dates

"Registration closes at midnight."It closes at 6pm on the closing date, and your force may close earlier.
"I can sit it any day that week."The NIE is a single day, 8am to 8pm. There are no alternative dates or times.
"If I withdraw I am automatically moved to the next one."You are not. You register again for a later sitting.
"The 2027 dates are out already."Not as at 11 October 2026. Dates quoted elsewhere before the 2027 handbook are guesses.
"Results come out on the same day for everyone at 9am."The handbook gives a results-by date and says the College tells liaison officers the release date. It does not give a time.
"My pass lasts five years like the sergeants' exam."An NIE pass lasts three years less one day from the exam date.

Dates checklist

  • Confirm the sitting you are entered for, and your force's internal registration deadline.
  • Register once in AIMS, check every detail, and screenshot the confirmation.
  • Send reasonable adjustment evidence to your force by the registration closing date.
  • Note the two-week point before the exam: withdraw before it if you are going to.
  • Do the system check and the familiarisation exercise when the link arrives.
  • Chase your liaison contact if the exam link has not arrived the day before.
  • Block out 120 minutes plus a buffer within 8am to 8pm on the day.
  • Diary the three-day deadline for incident reports and question queries.
  • Diary the results date, and keep your feedback report safe.
  • Check for the 2027 handbook from October 2026 if you might need a 2027 sitting.

What we could not verify

  • 2027 dates and handbook. Not published when we checked. Our timing estimate is an inference from two previous handbooks.
  • Force internal deadlines. Set locally and not published nationally.
  • Whether candidates ever bear the charge. The handbook describes charges to forces only.
  • Validity dates. The "three years less one day" column is our arithmetic on the handbook rule. Extensions for some leave and long-term sickness are possible through your liaison contact.
  • The 2027 Manual's publication date. We have not confirmed booksellers' listed dates with the publisher.
Quick answers

Frequently Asked Questions

When is the next NIE exam?

The last 2026 sitting is Tuesday, 17 November 2026, any time 8am to 8pm. Registration for it opened on Wednesday, 16 September 2026 and closes at 6pm on Wednesday, 21 October 2026, and results are due by Tuesday, 8 December 2026. Your force may close its own registration earlier.

What are the NIE exam dates for 2026?

Wednesday, 4 March 2026; Tuesday, 2 June 2026; Tuesday, 8 September 2026; Tuesday, 17 November 2026. Each runs 8am to 8pm online. The dates come from the College of Policing's NIE candidate handbook 2026, and the College offers no alternative dates or times.

When are the NIE exam dates for 2027?

Not published yet. When we checked on 11 October 2026 the College had not released a 2027 handbook. The 2024, 2025 and 2026 handbooks were created in late October 2023, early November 2024 and mid October 2025, so the 2027 dates are likely to appear around October or November 2026, but that is our inference from the pattern, not a College statement.

When does NIE registration close for November 2026?

At 6pm on Wednesday, 21 October 2026. That is the College's final date for forces to verify and allocate candidates, and the handbook warns that forces may set earlier deadlines, so check with your NIE liaison contact now. Late registrations are considered only where exceptional circumstances outside your control are proven.

How do I register for the NIE?

Through AIMS, the College's assessment information management system. Your NIE liaison contact sends the link when registration opens. You enter your details once (do not register twice), take a screenshot of the confirmation page, and your force then verifies that you are eligible and allocates you to the sitting.

When are NIE results released?

Within 3 weeks. For 2026 the handbook gives March: Wednesday, 25 March 2026; June: Tuesday, 23 June 2026; September: Tuesday, 29 September 2026; November: Tuesday, 8 December 2026. You get a link to your feedback report through AIMS and must verify your date of birth, national insurance number and email address to open it.

What time can I sit the NIE?

Any time 8am to 8pm on the exam day, online and unsupervised unless your force provides a centre. The exam lasts 120 minutes and must be finished in one sitting, so start early enough to finish well before 8pm.

Can I sit the NIE on a different date?

No. The handbook says there is no facility to offer alternative times or dates. If you cannot sit, tell your NIE liaison contact and register for a later sitting. You are not automatically re-entered.

Is there a fee for the NIE?

The handbook does not set a fee for candidates. It says forces are charged for every candidate still registered two weeks before the exam date and for absent candidates. Whether your force passes any cost on is a force matter; we have not seen a national rule.

How long before the NIE should I start revising?

The handbook recommends a minimum of 14 weeks of independent study using the Blackstone's Police Investigators' Manual. Fourteen weeks before Tuesday, 17 November 2026 was Tuesday, 11 August 2026, so if you are starting now for November, a compressed plan is the realistic option.

If I fail in November, when can I resit?

At the next sitting, subject to your force or organisation's policy, and you must register yourself in the usual way before the deadline. The next sitting after November 2026 will be in 2027, and its dates have not been published.

Can I sit the NIE on a career break or maternity leave?

Yes, in some cases. On a career break you can sit if its terms allow, with your force crime training manager's approval sent to the College by the registration closing date. You can sit during non-compulsory maternity leave or paternity leave, but not in the two weeks of compulsory maternity leave after childbirth. Ask your liaison contact about accommodations.

Which Blackstone's Manual edition is examined in 2026?

The 2026 edition of the Blackstone's Police Investigators' Manual, for all four 2026 sittings including November. The handbook says candidates are examined on the law only as it appears in that edition. Which edition the 2027 sittings use will be set by the 2027 handbook.
