Guernsey Police
Guernsey Police (Bailiwick of Guernsey Law Enforcement) publishes its pay bands openly and offers off-island transferees a relocation package, which makes it look like an easy move. The detail matters: every applicant needs a valid Guernsey Right to Work Document, transferee roles are currently limited to Sergeant and Inspector and the constable vacancy appears closed. This guide sets out what Guernsey publishes, what it means for UK constables and how to watch for openings, using only official Guernsey pages read on 23 October 2026.
Independent information, not advice · Sources checked 23 October 2026 · Bailiwick of Guernsey unless stated
If you hold a valid Guernsey Right to Work Document, you can apply for police roles posted at gov.gg/policejobs when they are open. Selection includes written, practical and physical fitness assessments, then police, eyesight and medical checks. Constables are paid £42,331 to £59,282 plus £1,683 a year. If you are a serving officer from off the island, transferee roles are currently limited to Sergeant and Inspector, with a relocation package that includes an Employment Permit for you and your immediate family. UK constables cannot currently transfer in at constable rank.
First, the gov.gg police jobs page asks every applicant for a valid Guernsey Right to Work Document. Second, Guernsey Police says that "at present, transferee roles are limited to Sergeant and Inspector positions". If you are a UK constable hoping to transfer at your current rank, that door is closed for now.
Most of PolicePay covers the 43 forces in England and Wales. Guernsey is a Crown Dependency with its own government, its own population management law, its own police pay bands and its own recruitment, so most of our England and Wales guidance does not apply. This guide uses only the Guernsey Police careers and transferee pages, the States of Guernsey police jobs page and the gov.gg population management glossary, all read on 23 October 2026. Where Guernsey does not publish something, we say so.

How Guernsey Police recruitment works
The Guernsey Police careers page is short. It says full training is provided, that police jobs are posted at gov.gg/policejobs and that expressions of interest go to training@guernsey.police.gg.
The States of Guernsey police jobs page is where the detail sits. On 23 October 2026 it listed three roles: Police Constable, Police Sergeant and Police Inspector, each with a pay band, a short list of requirements and a summary of the selection process.
Recruitment is vacancy-led. A role is advertised, you apply through the link on the listing and the vacancy closes. The careers page does not describe a fixed annual intake. Expressions of interest are welcomed by email, which is useful when nothing is open.
Off-island officers have their own page. The transferee page sets out which ranks are open to transferees and what Guernsey offers people who move to the island to take up a post.
The Guernsey Right to Work Document
The gov.gg police jobs page asks applicants for "a valid Guernsey Right to Work Document". This is the first thing to check, because without it you cannot apply for a locally advertised police role.
Who may live and work in Guernsey is governed by the Population Management (Guernsey) Law 2016, which sets the population management regime and its permit types. The gov.gg glossary explains two of its terms:
| Term | What the gov.gg glossary says |
|---|---|
| Established Resident | Someone who completes 8 consecutive years' ordinary residence in a Local Market dwelling |
| Employment Permit | Tied to a specific employer and job |
What this means for different readers:
- You already live and work in Guernsey. Check which Right to Work Document you hold and that it is valid. If you are unsure whether it covers a police post, ask before you apply.
- You are a sergeant or inspector off the island. The transferee page says successful off-island applicants get an Employment Permit for themselves and their immediate family as part of a relocation package. See the relocation package.
- You are a constable or new applicant off the island. Guernsey does not publish a route that gives you a permit to join as a constable. Email training@guernsey.police.gg before you plan anything.
We have not set out every permit type or how long each lasts, because we could not confirm the permit lengths that apply to police roles on an official page. The States of Guernsey's own population management pages are the authority. Read the gov.gg glossary and ask the employer before you rely on any permit.
The entry requirements Guernsey publishes
The gov.gg police jobs page lists these requirements:
- Good eyesight. No numerical standard is published on the listing. An eyesight check follows selection.
- A high level of fitness. Physical fitness is assessed during selection. The standard is not given on the listing.
- A good standard of education. No specific qualifications are named on the listing.
- A Category B driving licence. The listing does not say when you must hold it.
- A valid Guernsey Right to Work Document. See above.
What is missing matters too. We did not find an age limit, a nationality rule, a named list of qualifications or a list of offences that bar you on the official pages we read. We do not fill those gaps with guesses: ask the training team.
For comparison, our guides to police age limits and nationality and residency rules cover England and Wales. They are not Guernsey's rules.
Selection and checks
The gov.gg police jobs page says the selection process includes written, practical and physical fitness assessments. Police, eyesight and medical checks follow.
| Part | What Guernsey says | What it does not say |
|---|---|---|
| Written assessment | Part of selection | Format, length or marking |
| Practical assessment | Part of selection | What the practical exercises involve |
| Physical fitness assessment | Part of selection; a high level of fitness is required | The test used or the standard |
| Police checks | Follow selection | The vetting level or timescale |
| Eyesight check | Follows selection; good eyesight is required | The numerical standard |
| Medical check | Follows selection | The medical standards |
The listing does not say whether transferee sergeants and inspectors go through the same assessments as new constables. Ask when you apply.
Because the format is not published, general preparation is the honest answer: clear writing, calm and practical problem-solving, all-round fitness and a complete, accurate record for the checks. See how to prepare below.
What is open today
Where the three roles stood when we checked on 23 October 2026:
- Police Constable. Still listed on gov.gg/policejobs, but the "Read job summary" link now redirects to a recruitment system page that says the job "has either been deleted or is no longer available for application". So the constable vacancy appears to be closed today. The pay band on this page comes from the listing text.
- Police Sergeant and Police Inspector. Both listings appear on the same page. We did not open their job records, so we cannot say whether they are open for applications today. Check the listings yourself.
- Transferees. The transferee page says transferee roles are currently limited to Sergeant and Inspector positions.
The constable listing shows that a page can stay up after the job closes. Always click through to the job record and check that it accepts applications before you plan around it.
Which reader are you? What you can do now
Guernsey's rules affect people very differently depending on where they live and whether they already serve. This table sorts the most common situations, using only what Guernsey publishes.
| Your situation | What Guernsey's pages say | Your next step |
|---|---|---|
| You live in Guernsey and hold a valid Right to Work Document | You meet the right to work requirement on the police jobs page | Watch gov.gg/policejobs for a live constable vacancy and send an expression of interest |
| You are a serving sergeant or inspector off the island | Transferee roles are open at your rank, with a relocation package and Employment Permit | Check whether the listing is open, then contact the training team |
| You are a serving constable off the island | Transferee roles are limited to Sergeant and Inspector at present | Register interest, watch the transferee page or look at the Isle of Man |
| You are not a police officer and live off the island | Every applicant needs a valid Guernsey Right to Work Document; no permit route for new constables is published | Ask the training team before planning anything; compare forces you can apply to |
| You are a former officer | Not covered on the pages we read | Ask the training team how previous service is treated |
If you fall into the last three rows, our which police force fits me guide and the other forces hub cover forces with routes that may suit you better.
Guernsey Police published pay scales
Guernsey publishes a pay band for each role on the gov.gg police jobs page. As listed on 23 October 2026:
| Role | Scale points shown | Band | Allowance on top |
|---|---|---|---|
| Police Constable | Scale 002 to 011 | £42,331 to £59,282 | £1,683 a year |
| Police Sergeant | Not shown on the listing | £59,282 to £66,549 | £1,683 a year |
| Police Inspector | 031 to 034 | £75,787 to £82,150 | £1,683 a year |
- The allowance. Each listing adds £1,683 a year, which it calls a Hampshire allowance. The listing does not explain the name and we do not guess.
- The overlap. The top of the constable band (£59,282) is the same figure as the bottom of the sergeant band.
- Where you start. The listing gives bands, not the point a new constable or a transferee starts on. Ask before you accept an offer.
- The year. The listing does not say which pay year the bands cover. Treat them as the figures shown on 23 October 2026.
Do not use PolicePay's salary or take-home calculators for Guernsey. They use the England and Wales pay scale and UK tax rules. Guernsey has its own pay bands and its own tax system, which we have not modelled.
Transferees: Sergeant and Inspector only, for now
The Guernsey Police transferee page says: "At present, transferee roles are limited to Sergeant and Inspector positions."
"At present" is worth noticing. It describes the position today, not a permanent rule. The page does not say when, or whether, constable transferee roles will open again.
For a serving sergeant or inspector in England, Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland, Guernsey publishes a route at those ranks with a relocation package. The Isle of Man also says sergeants and inspectors are considered on its transferee route, so it is worth comparing both.
The relocation package for off-island officers
The transferee page says successful off-island applicants get a relocation package including:
- an Employment Permit for the individual and their immediate family;
- initial financial support to move;
- possible help with storage.
Partners can also get a Family Member's Employment Permit, which matters if your partner wants to work on the island.
The page does not give amounts, how long the permit lasts or what conditions are attached (for example, whether support must be repaid if you leave early). Get those details in writing before you resign from your current force. The gov.gg glossary says an Employment Permit is tied to a specific employer and job, so it is worth asking what happens to your permit if your role changes.
What this means for UK constables
If you are a serving constable in Great Britain or Northern Ireland, the honest position on 23 October 2026 is:
- You cannot transfer in at constable rank right now. Transferee roles are limited to Sergeant and Inspector.
- Applying as a new constable needs a Right to Work Document. The constable listing asks for a valid Guernsey Right to Work Document and Guernsey does not publish a permit route for off-island constable applicants.
- The constable vacancy appears closed anyway. Its job record says it is no longer available for application.
Practical options:
- Register interest. Email training@guernsey.police.gg to say you are a serving constable and ask whether constable transferee roles are expected to reopen.
- Watch the transferee page. "At present" can change. Check the page every so often.
- Look at the Isle of Man. The Isle of Man Constabulary was recruiting transferee constables on 23 October 2026, with UK drop-ins in Chester on 30 November, Manchester on 1 December and London on 4 December 2026.
- Think about promotion. If you are working towards sergeant, the Guernsey route may open to you at that rank.
- Compare transfers within Great Britain. See forces recruiting transferees and how to transfer between forces.
For sergeants and inspectors: what to check first
If you are a sergeant or inspector considering Guernsey, these are the points the published pages leave open. Ask about each before you resign:
| Topic | What Guernsey publishes | What to ask |
|---|---|---|
| Vacancy | Sergeant and Inspector listings on gov.gg/policejobs | Is the role open for applications now and when does it close? |
| Pay point | Sergeant £59,282 to £66,549; Inspector £75,787 to £82,150; plus £1,683 | Which point will I start on given my service? |
| Permit | An Employment Permit for you and your immediate family | How long does the permit last and what happens if my role changes? |
| Partner | A Family Member's Employment Permit | What can my partner do on that permit? |
| Moving costs | Initial financial support and possible help with storage | How much is it? Is any of it repayable if I leave early? |
| Selection | Written, practical and physical fitness assessments | Do transferees sit the same assessments as new constables? |
| Pension | Not covered on the pages we read | What happens to my current police pension and what scheme would I join? |
Pension is the big unknown. Guernsey's recruitment and transferee pages do not explain what happens to a police pension built up elsewhere or which scheme you would join. Our transfer pay and pension guide covers England and Wales only. Take independent advice on your pension before you resign.
A transferee's steps, in a sensible order
Guernsey does not publish a step-by-step transferee process on the pages we read. This order is our suggestion for a serving sergeant or inspector, built around what Guernsey does publish. It keeps the irreversible step (resigning) until last.
- Read the transferee page. Confirm transferee roles are still limited to Sergeant and Inspector and that your rank fits.
- Check the listing is live. Open the Sergeant or Inspector job record on gov.gg/policejobs and make sure it accepts applications.
- Contact the training team. Email training@guernsey.police.gg with your rank, service and questions about pay point, permit and assessments.
- Talk to your household. The Employment Permit covers your immediate family and partners can get a Family Member's Employment Permit. Check what that means for your partner's work.
- Apply and prepare. Selection includes written, practical and physical fitness assessments. Prepare for all three.
- Pass the checks. Police, eyesight and medical checks follow selection.
- Get the offer in writing. Pay point, allowance, permit, relocation support and any repayment terms.
- Take pension advice. Guernsey's pages do not cover what happens to your existing police pension.
- Only then resign. Give notice to your current force once everything above is settled.
How Guernsey's pay compares with other island and UK forces
Each figure below comes from the force's own published source. Gross pay only: we have not checked tax or living costs on any of the islands.
| Force | Starting point | Top of the published constable scale | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Guernsey Police | £42,331 (bottom of the constable band) plus £1,683 a year | £59,282 (top of the constable band) | gov.gg/policejobs |
| States of Jersey Police | £49,629.87 on appointment (2026, 40-hour week) | £79,745.02 after 12 years | Government of Jersey pay scales PDF |
| Isle of Man Constabulary | £35,106 starting salary | £50,256 after three years | IOMC Recruitment Guide, page 10 |
| Police Scotland | £34,001 on appointment (as of April 2026) | £54,597 after 11 years of increments | Police Scotland rewards and benefits page |
- Jersey pays new constables more. But Jersey asks new trainee officers to have lived in Jersey for at least five years.
- Guernsey's constable band is higher than the Isle of Man's at both ends. Before the allowance, £42,331 to £59,282 against £35,106 to £50,256.
- Hours and costs are not on the table. Compare like for like before drawing conclusions.
For England and Wales, see our police pay scales 2026 guide, the starting pay by force tool and the highest paying police force guide.
Guernsey vs Jersey vs the Isle of Man
The three island forces each set their own rules. This table uses only what each force or government publishes, read on 23 October 2026.
| Guernsey Police | States of Jersey Police | Isle of Man Constabulary | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Who can apply as a new constable | Holders of a valid Guernsey Right to Work Document | People who have lived in Jersey for at least five years and hold "Entitled to Work / Entitled status" | People who are Manx or qualify for an Isle of Man work permit |
| New recruit campaign on 23 Oct 2026 | Constable job record closed | 2026 campaign closed; no new date | Closed 21 August 2026; recruits start training 11 January 2027 |
| Transferee route | Open to Sergeant and Inspector roles only, with a relocation package | Not described on the careers page | Open now for constables; UK drop-ins on 30 Nov, 1 Dec and 4 Dec 2026 |
| Constable pay | £42,331 to £59,282, plus £1,683 a year | £49,629.87 on appointment (2026) to £79,745.02 after 12 years | £35,106 starting to £50,256 after three years |
| Minimum age | Not published on the pages we read | Over 18.5 | At least 18 and a half by the closing date; no upper limit |
| Fitness | Physical fitness assessment (standard not given on the listing) | Shuttle run to level 5.4; swim 50 m unaided | Shuttle run to level 5.4; swim 50 m confidently |
| Initial training | Not published on the pages we read | 20 weeks on-island | 16 weeks |
| Driving | Category B licence | Full manual Jersey driving licence | Full Isle of Man or UK manual licence by the deadline |
All three need a local status or permit for a new constable. They differ in what they offer people from elsewhere: the Isle of Man has an open transferee route for constables, Guernsey takes transferee sergeants and inspectors with a relocation package and Jersey's careers page describes no transferee route.

How to watch for Guernsey police vacancies
Guernsey does not publish an alert service on the pages we read, so watching means checking yourself:
- Bookmark gov.gg/policejobs. The police jobs page is where the careers page says police jobs are posted. Click through to each job record to see whether it accepts applications.
- Check the transferee page. The transferee page is where a change to the Sergeant and Inspector limit would show.
- Send an expression of interest. The careers page invites them at training@guernsey.police.gg. Say who you are, your rank and service if you are serving and which role you are interested in.
- Keep your fitness and paperwork ready. Vacancies open and close. Have your licence, right to work position and employment history ready to go.
How to prepare
This is PolicePay's general advice, built on what Guernsey publishes. It is not endorsed by Guernsey Police and it cannot predict a result.
- Settle your right to work first. Without a valid Guernsey Right to Work Document, or a transferee offer with an Employment Permit, nothing else matters.
- Check your licence. You need a Category B driving licence.
- Build all-round fitness. The listing asks for a high level of fitness but does not name the test. Train running endurance, speed over short distances and general strength.
- Get your eyes checked. Good eyesight is required and an eyesight check follows selection. If you have a condition, ask about the standard early.
- Practise clear writing. A written assessment is part of selection. Practise writing short, accurate reports and letters with good spelling and grammar.
- Practise practical problem-solving. The practical assessment is not described. Practise talking through what you would do in everyday policing situations, calmly and in order.
- Prepare your record. Police checks follow selection. Gather details of addresses, employment and anything you need to declare.
- Transferees: gather your service record. Have your rank, service dates, qualifications and any specialist roles ready, so the force can place you on the right pay point.
Free practice built for England and Wales that still helps with the skills: our written exercise examples, the mock interview and our fitness test by force guide.
Questions worth asking the training team
The careers page invites expressions of interest at training@guernsey.police.gg. These are the gaps in Guernsey's published pages most worth asking about:
- Are the Sergeant and Inspector roles open for applications now?
- Are constable transferee roles expected to reopen?
- Is there an age limit?
- How long is initial training and where is it delivered?
- What are the written, practical and physical fitness assessments and what is the fitness standard?
- Which Right to Work Document do I need for a police post?
- How long does a transferee's Employment Permit last?
- Which pay point would I start on?
- What does the £1,683 allowance cover?
Keep each email short and save any reply that affects your decision.
Writing an expression of interest
The careers page invites expressions of interest at training@guernsey.police.gg. There is no published form, so a short, well-organised email is the way in. A simple structure that gives the team what it needs to reply:
| Part | What to include | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Subject line | The role and your status, for example "Expression of interest: transferee sergeant" | Lets the team route it quickly |
| Opening line | Which role you are interested in and whether you are serving | The answer depends on this |
| Right to work | Whether you hold a Guernsey Right to Work Document or would need a permit | It is a requirement on the police jobs page |
| Service (if serving) | Force, rank, years of service and any specialist roles | Helps place you on the right pay point |
| Your questions | Two or three specific questions from the list above | Short questions get clear answers |
| Contact details | Email and phone number | So they can reply |
Keep it to a few short paragraphs. Do not attach documents unless asked. Save the reply, especially anything about pay, permits or relocation support.
Things to research yourself before moving
Moving to an island to police it is a big change. These are the topics Guernsey's recruitment pages do not cover and we have not checked. We list them so you do not overlook them, not because we know the answers:
- Housing. Where you could live on your permit and what it would cost.
- Tax. How Guernsey tax would apply to your salary and allowance.
- Pension. What happens to your existing police pension and what scheme you would join.
- Your partner's work. What the Family Member's Employment Permit allows.
- Schools and childcare. If you have children.
- Travel. How you would get to and from family elsewhere and what it would cost.
- Leaving later. What happens to your permit and any relocation support if you leave the force.
The States of Guernsey's own pages and the training team are the right places to start. Get anything that affects your decision in writing.

Common mistakes
- Assuming any UK officer can transfer. Transferee roles are limited to Sergeant and Inspector at present.
- Treating a listing as a live vacancy. The constable listing is still up but its job record is closed.
- Ignoring the Right to Work Document. It is a requirement on the police jobs page.
- Mixing up Guernsey and Jersey. They are separate forces with separate rules and pay.
- Resigning before the details are in writing. Get the permit, pay point and relocation support confirmed first.
- Using UK calculators. Guernsey has its own pay bands and its own tax system.
- Relying on old press figures. Age limits and training lengths quoted in old articles are not on official pages.
What we could not verify
- Age limits. Not on any official page we found. An old press article gives a range, but it is not an official source and may be out of date.
- Initial training length. Not on any official page we found. Press reports give figures we could not confirm.
- Permit lengths for police roles. We could not confirm on an official page how long an Employment Permit for a police post lasts. A recruitment advert on a third-party site mentions a long-term permit, but that is not an official source.
- Sergeant and Inspector vacancy status. Both listings appear on gov.gg/policejobs, but we did not open their job records, so we cannot say whether they are open today.
- The £1,683 allowance. The listing calls it a Hampshire allowance but does not explain it.
- The pay year and starting point. The listing gives bands but not the pay year or the point a new joiner or transferee starts on.
- The assessments. Format, standard and marking of the written, practical and physical fitness assessments are not published.
- Pension arrangements. Not covered on the pages we read.
- Force size. Not given on the pages we read.
- Tax and living costs. We have not checked them, so we make no claim about take-home pay.
Every fact on this page was checked against the sources listed below on 23 October 2026. Guernsey can change its vacancies, pay and transferee rules at any time. If something here no longer matches gov.gg/policejobs or the transferee page, the official page is right.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I join Guernsey Police from the UK?
Not as a transferee constable at the moment. Guernsey Police says transferee roles are currently limited to Sergeant and Inspector positions. New constables need a valid Guernsey Right to Work Document. If you are a serving sergeant or inspector, the transferee route is open to you in principle and successful off-island applicants get a relocation package including an Employment Permit. If you are a UK constable or a new applicant, email training@guernsey.police.gg to ask whether any route fits you.
What is a Guernsey Right to Work Document?
It is the document the gov.gg police jobs page asks every applicant to hold. Guernsey's population management regime, set by the Population Management (Guernsey) Law 2016, decides who can live and work on the island. The gov.gg glossary describes an Employment Permit as tied to a specific employer and job and defines an Established Resident as someone who completes 8 consecutive years' ordinary residence in a Local Market dwelling. Check gov.gg for which document applies to you.
How much do Guernsey police officers earn?
The gov.gg police jobs page lists a Police Constable on Scale 002 to 011 at £42,331 to £59,282, a Police Sergeant at £59,282 to £66,549 and a Police Inspector on 031 to 034 at £75,787 to £82,150. Each role also gets £1,683 a year, which the listing calls a Hampshire allowance.
Is Guernsey Police recruiting constables now?
Not as far as we could see on 23 October 2026. The constable listing is still on gov.gg/policejobs but its job summary link now leads to a page saying the job has either been deleted or is no longer available for application. Check gov.gg/policejobs for the current position.
Can a UK police constable transfer to Guernsey?
Not at present. Guernsey Police says transferee roles are currently limited to Sergeant and Inspector positions. That could change, so check the transferee page or email training@guernsey.police.gg.
What does the Guernsey Police relocation package include?
The transferee page says successful off-island applicants get a relocation package including an Employment Permit for the individual and immediate family, initial financial support to move and possible help with storage. Partners can get a Family Member's Employment Permit.
What are the entry requirements for Guernsey Police?
The gov.gg police jobs page asks for good eyesight, a high level of fitness, a good standard of education, a Category B driving licence and a valid Guernsey Right to Work Document. Police, eyesight and medical checks follow selection.
What tests does Guernsey Police use?
The gov.gg police jobs page says the selection process includes written, practical and physical fitness assessments. It does not describe them in more detail or give the fitness standard.
What is the age limit for Guernsey Police?
We could not find an age limit on any official Guernsey page. An old press article gave one, but it is not an official source and may be out of date, so ask training@guernsey.police.gg.
How long is Guernsey Police training?
The careers page says full training is provided, but we did not find the length of initial training on an official page. Press reports give figures, but we could not confirm them, so ask the training team.
Where are Guernsey police jobs advertised?
The Guernsey Police careers page says police jobs are posted at gov.gg/policejobs. Expressions of interest can be sent to training@guernsey.police.gg. Off-island officers should also read the transferee opportunities page on the Guernsey Police website.
Do I need a degree to join Guernsey Police?
The gov.gg police jobs page does not ask for a degree. It asks for a good standard of education, without naming specific qualifications. If you are unsure whether your qualifications are enough, ask the training team.
Is Guernsey Police the same as the States of Jersey Police?
No. They are separate forces on separate islands with separate rules. Jersey asks new trainee officers to have lived in Jersey for at least five years and starts constables on £49,629.87 in 2026. Guernsey asks for a Guernsey Right to Work Document and lists constable pay of £42,331 to £59,282 plus £1,683 a year.
