British Transport Police: Recruitment

How To Join
British Transport Police

BTP polices Britain's railways and runs its own recruitment process: a bespoke situational judgement test, online tests, a presentation and interview, its own pension fund and allowances set by station. This guide sets out each stage from BTP's careers pages, its live adverts and the packs attached to them, read on 23 October 2026.

Short answer: how do you join British Transport Police?

Apply on BTP's careers site while a campaign is open. BTP's Inner London PCEP campaign is open and closes at midnight on Sunday 1 November 2026 (training from April 2027). You then sit BTP's own situational judgement test, have your application answers scored against the CVF, complete online assessments and attend an assessment centre with a presentation, a competency-based interview and a 15m bleep test to level 5.4. A conditional offer is followed by vetting, references and a medical.

Written from BTP's own pages

Every stage below comes from BTP's careers site (careers.btp.police.uk), its live adverts and the recruitment packs attached to them, read on 23 October 2026. BTP's pages are not perfectly consistent with each other: where they differ, we give both and say which is newer. BTP is not part of the College of Policing's standard process for the 43 Home Office forces, so do not assume anything from our England and Wales guides applies.

What makes British Transport Police different

British Transport Police is the national police force for the railways in England, Wales and Scotland. Under section 31 of the Railways and Transport Safety Act 2003, its constables have the powers of a constable on railway track, networks, stations, depots and other railway land and anywhere in Great Britain for purposes connected with a railway.

It is not one of the 43 Home Office forces. That matters to applicants in three ways:

  • Its own selection. BTP's FAQ calls its process a bespoke assessment process and says scores from another force's assessment centre are not transferable.
  • Same pay scale, different pay mechanics and pension. BTP pays the same national constable scale as Home Office forces, but every four weeks (13 pay days a year), with London and South East allowances set by station. Its officers join the CARE section of the BTP Force Superannuation Fund, not the Police Pension Scheme. See BTP pay scales and the BTP pension guide.
  • Its own geography. You apply for an area, such as Inner London and work across stations and trains rather than a county. BTP says specific postings cannot be guaranteed, but it considers where you live wherever it can.

Is British Transport Police recruiting now?

Yes. BTP recruits new constables by area, in campaigns that run for a few weeks each. When this page was last built 5 were open:

  • Transferees and re-joiners apply through their own adverts: six regional adverts close on 2 November 2026 and several rolling pools have no closing date. See the BTP transferee guide.
  • PCSOs and Special Constables have their own adverts, including a rolling Special Constables advert. See BTP PCSO and BTP Special Constables.
  • Online Q&A sessions: Friday 6 November 2026 (10:00 to 11:00); Wednesday 18 November 2026 (19:00 to 20:00); Monday 30 November 2026 (12:30 to 13:30).

Successful candidates get a conditional offer and wait in a pool for a future intake for up to 12 months. See every open BTP campaign with its closing date.

BTP eligibility: who can apply

  • Age. You can apply from 17 and a half (FAQ) and must be 18 to start.
  • Right to work and residency. The permanent right to live and work in the UK and continuous UK residence for the three years immediately before applying.
  • English and maths. The current PCEP advert asks for Level 2 English and maths (GCSE grade 4 or C, or an accepted equivalent), or a pass in BTP's own Level 2 English and maths assessment.
  • Level 3 or experience. Also either a Level 3 qualification (for example two A levels at A to E) with evidence, or experience: 12 months' policing experience within the last five years (as a Special with independent patrol status, a PCSO or police staff), or 24 months in the armed forces, emergency services, revenue protection, railway enforcement or rail incident response or service delivery management. (BTP's general FAQ says no formal qualifications are required; the advert is more specific and newer.)
  • Driving licence. The FAQ says a full UK licence is essential for all outer London areas. The Inner London advert does not list one.
  • Tattoos. Considered case by case. BTP says visible tattoos on hands, arms, legs and feet are generally acceptable, discreet ones behind the ear are acceptable and face, neck and offensive tattoos are assessed individually.
  • Other work. Officers are not normally appointed if they hold other paid employment or run a business; interests must be declared.

The advert says you may not be eligible if you:

  • have ever received a custodial sentence, including a suspended one;
  • were declined or refused vetting in the last two years by BTP or any other police force, the NCA, the CNC or the MOD;
  • were dismissed from a police force, law enforcement agency or public office, or face a live misconduct investigation;
  • are bankrupt, have a County Court Judgment or an unmanaged Individual Voluntary Arrangement;
  • are within a reapplication period after an earlier unsuccessful application.

The BTP recruitment stages in order

BTP describes the stages in more than one way. Its Inner London advert lists an online application, a situational judgement test, an online assessment centre, a final interview, a fitness assessment, a medical assessment, then vetting, references and pre-employment checks. Its role page describes online tests and a video assessment before an in-person assessment centre with a presentation and interview. BTP does not say what its online assessment centre contains or which list applies to every 2026/27 campaign. The table follows the role page and application guidance.

BTP police officer selection, from BTP's application guidance and current advert (read 23 October 2026)
StepStageWhat happens
1Online applicationEligibility screening, then your answers are assessed. Spelling and grammar matter: an unreasonable number of errors fails the application.
2Situational judgement test (SJT)BTP's own SJT: realistic workplace and policing scenarios, choosing the most appropriate response.
3Competency-based question scoringYour application answers are scored against the College of Policing's Competency and Values Framework (CVF).
4Online assessmentsEnglish and maths tests if you do not hold GCSE grade 4 (C) or an accepted equivalent, plus a video-based observation and written exercise for everyone.
5Assessment centreA competency-based interview including a presentation, one hour at most (the role page says a 10-minute presentation followed by an interview). If the interview is successful you move on to Stage Two: the bleep test to level 5.4, uniform measurements and a mouth swab and fingerprints for biometric vetting.
6Conditional offerYou join a pool for future training intakes for up to 12 months (current Inner London advert).
7Vetting, references and checksBTP's baseline vetting, employment references, right to work, qualifications and PNC checks.
8MedicalBy a doctor or registered nurse: eyesight, hearing, blood pressure and body mass, plus a drugs and alcohol test.

BTP warns that the process can be lengthy and that it may take a considerable time before you join an intake. Its FAQ says interview feedback for police officer roles can take up to eight weeks and that vetting only starts after a conditional offer. You pay your own travel to interviews and assessment centres.

The BTP situational judgement test

BTP's application includes its own situational judgement test. BTP says it presents realistic workplace and policing scenarios and asks you to identify the most appropriate actions or responses, measuring decision-making, integrity, teamwork, communication and professionalism. There are no trick questions, no policing experience is needed and you must pass it to progress. BTP's advice is to answer honestly, choosing the responses that reflect how you would act. Our BTP SJT guide has more detail and free original scenarios.

BTP does not publish the number of questions, the time allowed or the pass mark and it does not say the test is the College of Policing's National Sift. So treat any "BTP SJT" practice, including ours, as practice in the skill rather than in BTP's actual test.

Alongside the SJT, your written application answers are scored against the College of Policing's Competency and Values Framework (CVF). The guidance stresses written communication: an unreasonable number of spelling or grammar errors makes an application unsuccessful. Draft your answers offline, check them carefully and write them yourself.

BTP online assessments

After the SJT and application scoring, BTP's guidance describes two kinds of online assessment:

  • English and maths tests, only if you do not hold GCSE grade 4 (C) or above in English Language and maths or an accepted equivalent. See the online maths and English tests guide.
  • A video-based assessment for everyone, testing your ability to observe and interpret information, your written communication and your judgement. You watch a short clip and give factual information about what you saw. See the BTP video assessment guide.

BTP says full guidance is provided before the assessments and asks you to complete them independently in a quiet place free from distractions. BTP's Inner London advert lists an "Online Assessment Centre" but does not say what it contains, so we do not assume it is these tests or the College of Policing's online assessment centre.

The BTP assessment centre: presentation and interview

If you pass the online tests you are invited to an assessment centre. BTP's application guidance says the day includes:

  • A competency-based interview including a presentation, one hour at most. BTP's police officer role page describes a 10-minute presentation followed by an interview. BTP says you are assessed on "your insight into the BTP, your understanding and expectations of the role" as well as the CVF.
  • Stage Two, if your interview is successful (BTP's recruitment pack): the job-related fitness test, a bleep test to level 5.4, then the items below.
  • Uniform measurements.
  • Biometric samples: a mouth swab and fingerprints for vetting.

BTP does not publish the presentation topic, whether you get it in advance or how the interview is scored. The newest Inner London advert lists an online assessment centre and a "final interview", so read your invitation carefully for the format. See the BTP assessment centre guide, our BTP interview questions and the free presentation timer.

Why the railway setting matters in your answers

BTP officers work at stations and on trains, among passengers, rail staff and crowds and the current advert lists specialisms from neighbourhood policing and safeguarding to county lines, public order and counter terrorism. Answers that show you understand the people you would serve on the railway and how an incident on the network can affect thousands of travellers are likely to land better than generic policing answers. This is our view, not BTP guidance.

Try one out loud. Answer a practice question free and get a scored result in about a minute. No account. Practise in the free police mock interview

The BTP fitness test

BTP uses the 15-metre bleep test to a minimum of level 5.4, the same standard as the forces in England and Wales. It is taken at the assessment centre (Stage Two), again in your first week of training and at the start of personal safety training. BTP's recruitment pack gives a maximum of three attempts, which must be passed within six months of your offer. For serving officers, a BTP FOI response from March 2024 says the test is mandatory only for new recruits in training and officers in specialist roles (an older FAQ says it is annual). See the BTP fitness test guide.

Level 5.4 takes about three and a half minutes. If you have not run a bleep test before, start with our guides to passing the police bleep test and a bleep test training plan and compare forces in fitness test by force.

Conditional offer, vetting and the medical

A pass at the assessment centre leads to a conditional offer. BTP then carries out full vetting (its own baseline vetting and employment references) and other checks: right to work and residency, qualifications and employment history plus Police National Computer checks. The offer letter or contract is issued once security checks are complete. The advert warns that inaccurate or incomplete information, or undisclosed convictions or cautions, can lead to withdrawal at any stage.

BTP's vetting guidance attached to the advert says recruitment vetting needs a full three-year UK address history and checks finances, address history and social media, as well as family members, people you live with and associates. A current county court judgment, or a bankruptcy or debt relief order satisfied in the last three years, means initial vetting clearance will not be given. See the BTP vetting guide.

The medical is carried out by a doctor or registered nurse and checks eyesight, hearing, blood pressure and body mass; you must also pass a drugs and alcohol test. BTP's medical quick reference guide (version 2, attached to the advert) says BMI alone is never used to reject a candidate, glasses and contact lenses are acceptable for the eyesight standard and hearing aids are allowed with further assessment.

BTP training and probation

  • England and Wales: the Police Constable Entry Programme (PCEP), BTP's non-degree route, a two-year programme. The current advert says initial training from April 2027 lasts about 33 weeks, combining classroom, online and scenario-based learning with operational experience and you are paid from day one.
  • Scotland: a two-year Modern Apprenticeship leading to an SCQF Level 7 Certificate in Policing, starting with 12 weeks at the Scottish Police College.
  • Probation: two years for officers, with support from regional training staff, your line manager and a tutor constable. BTP's role page describes, for Scotland, 5.4 fitness tests, an oral exam and an open distance learning exam during probation.
  • Shifts: 12-hour rotating shifts covering 24 hours a day, with occasional last-minute changes.

BTP's recruitment pack says England and Wales recruits train at "our training centre in London" (the address is not published). Inner London postings get no accommodation; Outer London postings can ask for it at formal offer (not guaranteed); C Division recruits get accommodation for the in-person weeks; the Scotland course is residential. No annual leave is allowed during training. See the BTP training guide and divisions and postings.

Other benefits listed in the advert include a free Oyster card for duty and personal travel in London, 25 days' annual leave increasing with service, a pension in the CARE section of BTP's own fund (the BTP Force Superannuation Fund, not the Police Pension Scheme) and 26 weeks' full-pay maternity leave. BTP's role page adds free travel on National Rail services on duty and a residential pass or privilege season ticket for home-to-work travel, subject to eligibility. BTP pays every four weeks, so there are 13 pay days a year: work out yours with the BTP take-home pay calculator. Some older BTP pages (the graduate and detective scheme pages) still show 2024/25 pay; the advert and role page above are the current ones. Full detail: BTP pay scales and allowances.

Other ways into BTP

  • Graduate programme and Detective Constable Accelerated Scheme: both pages are still on BTP's careers site, but no live vacancy uses them and their pay figures are from 2024/25. Do not plan on either being open.
  • Transferees, re-joiners and returners: separate adverts by area, including PIP 2 detective transferees in London. MDP and CNC officers are not accepted as transferees. See the BTP transferee guide.
  • PCSOs: England and Wales only; the same stages including the 5.4 bleep test and a one-year probation; BTP PCSOs carry handcuffs. See BTP PCSO.
  • Special constables: volunteers giving at least 16 hours a month, selected through the same stages as officers. See BTP Special Constables.

BTP in Scotland: BTP also polices Scotland's railways and recruits there on a two-year Modern Apprenticeship that starts at the Scottish Police College. If you are weighing it against Police Scotland itself, see how to join Police Scotland.

Is BTP pay the same as the Met? Both pay the same national constable scale. BTP sets its own London Allowance (£5,783.75 for 2026/27) and the BTP Authority says its 2025 decision put BTP on a par with the Met and the City of London Police. BTP pays every four weeks rather than monthly and its pension is its own fund.

How to prepare for BTP recruitment

General PolicePay advice, built on what BTP publishes. It is not endorsed by BTP and does not predict a result.

  1. Check you meet the advert's criteria first, especially the three-year residency rule and the Level 3 or experience requirement. Have your evidence ready.
  2. Write your application answers carefully. They are scored against the CVF and screened for spelling and grammar. Use real, specific examples in your own words.
  3. Practise judgement scenarios. Think through what a constable should do first, why and what they would avoid. Answer BTP's SJT honestly, as BTP advises.
  4. Practise observing and writing. For the video exercise, practise watching a short clip, noting facts accurately and writing a clear account of what happened and what you would do.
  5. Prepare a 10-minute presentation skeleton. A clear opening, three points, a close and practice against a timer. See our BTP interview page.
  6. Learn about BTP. BTP marks your insight into BTP and your expectations of the role: its jurisdiction on the railways, its divisions, the area you are applying for, 12-hour rotating shifts and the training.
  7. Train for 5.4 early, and keep training: you will be tested again in training.
  8. Ask for adjustments early. BTP says reasonable adjustments are available at every stage.

What we could not verify

  • The SJT's format and pass mark. BTP does not publish the number of questions, timing or scoring.
  • What BTP's "online assessment centre" contains. The Inner London advert uses the phrase without describing it; the role page describes an in-person assessment centre. BTP does not say which applies to every 2026/27 campaign.
  • The presentation topic and the interview scoring. Not published.
  • The training centre address. BTP says "our training centre in London" but does not give the address.
  • Whether the 33 weeks of training include on-area weeks, and intake dates other than "from April 2027".
  • BTP's pension contribution and accrual rates. Not on public pages.
  • Overall timescale from application to start, beyond BTP's warning that it can be lengthy and the 12-month conditional offer pool.
Quick answers

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I join British Transport Police?

Apply online through BTP's careers site when a police officer campaign is open. The stages are an online application, BTP's own situational judgement test, online assessments, an assessment centre with a presentation, interview and bleep test, then a conditional offer, vetting and a medical. BTP's Inner London PCEP campaign is open and closes at midnight on Sunday 1 November 2026 (training from April 2027).

Does British Transport Police use the National Sift?

BTP's pages do not mention the College of Policing's National Sift. Its careers FAQ says BTP uses a bespoke assessment process and does not accept scores from another force's assessment centre. Its application includes its own situational judgement test and the application answers are scored against the College's Competency and Values Framework.

Is there a presentation in the BTP interview?

BTP's application guidance describes a one-hour competency-based interview and presentation at the assessment centre and its police officer role page says a 10-minute presentation followed by an interview. BTP does not publish the presentation topic. The current Inner London advert lists the stage simply as a final interview, so check your invitation.

What is the BTP fitness test?

The job-related fitness test: a 15-metre bleep test to a minimum of level 5.4, taken at the assessment centre if your interview is successful. BTP's recruitment pack gives you a maximum of three attempts, passed within six months of the offer. You repeat it in your first week of training and at personal safety training. A BTP FOI response from March 2024 says it is then mandatory only for officers in specialist roles; an older FAQ says it is annual.

How much do BTP officers earn?

BTP's current Inner London advert gives a starting salary of £33,609, rising to £52,014 after five years. Inner London officers also get £9,044.75 in allowances (London Allowance £5,783.75 and London Weighting £3,261) from day one of training, for starting earnings of over £42,600. BTP pays every four weeks, so there are 13 pay days a year. Its transferee pack says it uses the same national pay scale as Home Office forces. Location allowances are set station by station.

What qualifications do you need to join BTP?

The current PCEP advert asks for Level 2 English and maths (GCSE grade 4 or C) or a pass in BTP's own Level 2 assessment, plus either a Level 3 qualification such as two A levels, or relevant work experience normally from the last five years, for example in the armed forces, emergency services, rail operations, revenue protection, police staff, PCSO or special constable roles. BTP's FAQ says no formal qualifications are required, so follow the advert you are applying to.

Can I apply to BTP at 17?

BTP's FAQ says you can apply from 17 and a half, but you must be 18 to start in role. The police officer role page says you must be at least 18 to start employment.

Do you need a driving licence for BTP?

BTP's FAQ says a full UK driving licence is essential for all outer London areas. The Inner London advert and the police officer role page do not list a licence as a requirement. Check the advert for the area you are applying to.

How long is BTP training?

The current Inner London advert says that from April 2027 initial training lasts about 33 weeks, as part of the two-year Police Constable Entry Programme. Officers serve a two-year probation. In Scotland, BTP uses a two-year Modern Apprenticeship that starts with 12 weeks at the Scottish Police College.

If I fail, when can I reapply to BTP?

BTP's current adverts (from September 2026) give a three-month reapplication period after an unsuccessful application, test or interview. Its older FAQ page and October 2025 recruitment pack say six months. Check the advert you are applying to.
