Which Police Force
Fits Me?
Answer 10 to 12 short questions about nationality, residence, age, licence, eyesight, BMI, firearms and where you want to work. See every UK force group marked Looks eligible, Check this or Not eligible on this answer, with the rule and its source. Free, no sign-up, nothing stored.
Independent information, not advice · Sources checked 23 October 2026 · England and Wales unless stated
This tool is PolicePay's reading of each force's published recruitment rules, read between 21 and 23 October 2026. It covers Home Office forces in England and Wales as a group, Police Scotland, British Transport Police, the MOD Police, the Civil Nuclear Constabulary and the PSNI. It cannot decide your eligibility: each force does.
How the tool works
UK policing is not one employer. The 43 Home Office forces in England and Wales share national rules but set some of their own. Police Scotland, the PSNI and three national forces (British Transport Police, the MOD Police and the Civil Nuclear Constabulary) each recruit separately with different rules on nationality, residence, licences, eyesight and firearms. A rule that stops you at one force may not matter at another.
- One question per screen. Pick an answer and press Next. Back takes you to the previous question.
- Follow-up questions only when they matter. Immigration status is asked only if you are not British or Irish; penalty points only if you hold a full licence.
- Six results. Home Office forces (as a group), Police Scotland, BTP, the MOD Police, the CNC and the PSNI, best fit first.
- Every rule shown with its source, from the force's own pages or the regulations. Rules your answers meet are folded away; anything to check or that rules you out is open.
- Live campaigns for BTP and the PSNI appear on their cards, worked out when this page was last built.
- Nothing is stored or sent. Your answers exist only on this page while it is open.
The main rules at a glance
The short version of each force's rules. The full wording and the source for every rule are in the next section.
| Rule | Home Office forces | Police Scotland | BTP | MOD Police | CNC | PSNI |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Minimum age to apply | 17 (18 to be appointed) | 18 | 17 and a half (18 to start) | 18 | 18 (18 and a half to start) | 17 (18 on appointment) |
| Upper age | None in law; some forces say 57 | None published | None | None | None | 57 at the closing date (October 2026 campaign) |
| Nationality | UK or EEA national, or indefinite leave | UK or EEA national, or indefinite leave | Permanent right to live and work; no visas | Sole British only | No sole British rule; national criteria | UK or Irish, or indefinite leave |
| UK residence | 3 years (most forces) | 3 years | 3 years continuous | 5 years (10 for DV sites) | Up to 10 years expected for vetting | No minimum; 3-year checkable history |
| Driving licence | Varies by force | Manual licence; 6 points maximum | Full UK licence outside Inner London | Full UK manual; 6 points maximum | Full manual UK or European; 6 points maximum | Not needed to apply |
| Glasses | Allowed | Allowed | Allowed | Allowed | Not accepted: contact lenses only | Allowed |
| BMI | 18 to 30 screen | Checked; 18 to 30 on rejoiner page | No maximum | 19 up to 30, or body fat route | 18.5 to 30, or body fat route | No number; obesity may fail |
| Armed from day one | No | No | No | Yes | Yes | Yes |
The three biggest traps: the MOD Police accepts only sole British nationals; the CNC does not accept glasses for its eyesight standard; and BTP needs a full UK licence for every advert outside Inner London.
Every rule the tool uses, force by force
Each row is a rule the tool applies, in the force's own terms where possible, with the page it comes from. For Home Office forces we use only rules already stated on PolicePay and say "most Home Office forces", because each of the 43 can add its own.
Home Office forces (England and Wales)
| Rule | What the force says | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Age | Apply from 17, appointed from 18. No upper limit in the regulations; City of London Police states 57 and the Met says typically 57. | Police Regulations 2003, regulation 10 |
| Nationality | UK or EEA national (including Irish), or indefinite leave to remain (including settled status). Pre-settled status and visas do not meet it. | Police Regulations 2003, regulation 10 |
| Residence | Three years' continuous UK residence before applying; service abroad with the armed forces or HM Government counts. | College of Policing: constable pre-employment guidance (2024) |
| Time abroad | More than three months living abroad in the last three years makes clearance unlikely unless an exception applies; a gap year of about 12 months does not break residence. | College of Policing: constable pre-employment guidance (2024) |
| Driving licence | Set by each force. Most ask for a full manual licence; Thames Valley accepts automatic-only; some forces set a points limit. | PolicePay: driving licence rules by force |
| Eyesight | Glasses and contact lenses allowed. Corrected 6/12 in either eye and 6/6 with both eyes. | Home Office Circular 007/2019: eyesight standards |
| BMI | A screen, not a pass mark: outside 18 to 30 usually means further assessment. Some forces set their own limit. | Home Office recommended medical standards (Circular 59/2004) |
| Armed role | New constables are not firearms officers. Armed roles are specialist posts. | PolicePay: armed police transfer explained |

How to read your result
| Status | When you see it | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Looks eligible | Every rule we check for that force is met by your answers | Read the force guide, then prepare for the selection stages, fitness test and medical |
| Check this | At least one rule depends on details the force does not publish, or on how it treats your case | Ask the force about each flagged rule before you apply, ideally in writing |
| Not eligible on this answer | At least one published rule is not met by your answer | Read the reason: many change with time (age, residence, status, a licence or contact lenses) |
A force's overall status is its weakest rule. Two answers are about fit rather than eligibility. Where you want to work never rules a force out: it shows Check this if the force has no posts there, because you could move. Saying you do not want to carry a firearm marks the MOD Police, CNC and PSNI as not a fit, because every officer there is armed.
Each force decides, often on details a short questionnaire cannot capture: the exact dates of a period abroad, a caution, a medical history or the vetting level of a posting. The tool also does not check criminal records, finances, tattoos, qualifications, fitness or the selection tests. The best it can say is that nothing in your answers rules you out.
Worked examples
Invented answer sets, not real applicants, run through the same rules the tool uses (this table is generated from them, so it always matches). Anything not mentioned is answered the simple way: British only, 18 to 57, ten years in the UK, a full manual licence with no points, no glasses, a BMI of 19 up to 30 and happy to relocate. With those answers 6 of 6 force groups look eligible.
| Example | Looks eligible | Check this | Not eligible on this answer |
|---|---|---|---|
| British only, 30, full manual licence, wears glasses, wants an armed role, will relocate | MOD Police; PSNI | Home Office forces; Police Scotland; BTP | CNC |
| British and Irish dual national, contact lenses, wants London | Home Office forces; BTP | Police Scotland; CNC; PSNI | MOD Police |
| EU national with pre-settled status, four years in the UK, no licence, wants London | None | Home Office forces; BTP | Police Scotland; MOD Police; CNC; PSNI |
| Aged 17 and a half, British, provisional licence, wants Northern Ireland | PSNI | Home Office forces | Police Scotland; BTP; MOD Police; CNC |
| Commonwealth national with indefinite leave, seven years in the UK, does not want to carry a firearm | Home Office forces; Police Scotland; BTP | None | MOD Police; CNC; PSNI |
| Serving Home Office constable, BMI 31, wants Scotland | None | Home Office forces; Police Scotland; BTP; MOD Police; CNC; PSNI | None |
Note the first example: glasses alone rule out the CNC, while every other force accepts them. In the second, dual nationality rules out only the MOD Police.

- BTP's Basingstoke PCEP campaign is open and closes at midnight on Monday 2 November 2026 (£3,105 South East Allowance; full UK driving licence essential). Advert
- BTP's C Division PCEP campaign (Truro, Swindon, Yeovil, Birmingham, Wolverhampton, Coventry, Milton Keynes and Leicester) is open and closes at midnight on Monday 2 November 2026. Advert
- BTP's Machynlleth PCEP campaign (English and Welsh adverts; Welsh desirable) is open and closes at midnight on Monday 2 November 2026. Advert

- Police Scotland: its police officer vacancy was open with a closing date of 31 March 2027 when we checked on 22 October 2026. See joining Police Scotland.
- Home Office forces: each force opens its own windows. See the England and Wales eligibility check.
What we could not verify
Our facts files mark some details as not published or not confirmed. The tool never treats these as rules. Where one matters to your answer, it says Check this and asks you to confirm with the force.
- Home Office forces: Licence, penalty points, upper age and BMI rules for each of the 43 forces: they vary, so the tool says check your force.
- Police Scotland: How time abroad counts towards the three years, whether a non-UK licence is accepted and the BMI range for new officers (only the rejoiner page gives one).
- BTP: Whether an automatic-only licence counts as the full UK licence BTP asks for. How BTP treats pre-settled status.
- MOD Police: The full list of New Recruit screening questions beyond age and licence. Which sites need Developed Vetting beyond AWE, Menwith Hill and RNAD Coulport.
- CNC: The nationality criteria used at shortlisting and the national security vetting level for a new officer.
- PSNI: The Transferee Scheme criteria (which forces count, service needed) and any numeric BMI limit.
The tool also leaves out rules that need more than a short answer: criminal records, finances, tattoos, qualifications, hearing, colour vision and the fitness tests. Each force guide covers them.
After your result
- One or more forces look eligible: read that force's guide, check its current adverts and start training for its fitness test (the CNC asks for 7.6 on the bleep test; most others for 5.4).
- Some checks: write down the flagged rules and ask each force before you apply. Dates of time abroad, immigration documents and licence details are the usual questions.
- Nothing open yet: look at what would change it. Turning 18, reaching three or five years' residence, getting indefinite leave or passing your driving test can open several forces at once.
- Choosing between forces: compare them on the other forces hub, or check pay at Home Office forces with the starting salary guide.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does this tool tell me which police force I am eligible for?
No tool outside a force can decide that. It compares your answers with each force's published rules (read between 21 and 23 October 2026) and marks each force Looks eligible, Check this or Not eligible on this answer, with the reason and the source. Each force makes its own decision. Fitness, medical and vetting come later.
Can a dual national join the MOD Police?
No. The MOD Police says you must be a sole British national holding a valid British passport and that dual nationals and foreign nationals cannot be accepted. The Civil Nuclear Constabulary, the other armed national force, has no sole British rule: it checks nationality and right to work against national criteria at shortlisting.
Can I join the Civil Nuclear Constabulary if I wear glasses?
Not with glasses. The CNC's medical guidance says glasses are not acceptable to meet its eyesight standard, so contact lenses are the route if you need correction. Home Office forces, Police Scotland, BTP, the MOD Police and the PSNI all allow glasses.
Which police forces do not need a driving licence?
The PSNI does not need a licence to apply, though it recommends getting one. BTP's Inner London advert states no licence requirement, but every other BTP advert needs a full UK licence. The MOD Police needs a full UK manual licence and the CNC a full manual UK or European licence, each with no more than six points. Police Scotland asks for a manual licence. Home Office forces each set their own rule.
How long do I need to have lived in the UK to join the police?
Most Home Office forces, Police Scotland and BTP ask for three years. The MOD Police asks for five years with no more than six months' absence, or ten for Developed Vetting sites. The CNC expects up to ten years depending on the vetting level but says less does not stop an application. The PSNI has no minimum, though vetting needs a checkable three-year history.
Which UK police forces are armed?
Every officer is trained to carry a firearm at the MOD Police, the Civil Nuclear Constabulary and the PSNI. In Home Office forces, Police Scotland and BTP new constables are not firearms officers; armed roles are specialist posts you apply for later.
Is there an upper age limit for joining the police?
The MOD Police, the CNC and BTP say there is none and Police Scotland publishes none. For its October 2026 campaign the PSNI said your 58th birthday must fall after the closing date. Home Office forces have no upper limit in the regulations, but City of London Police states 57 and the Met says typically 57.
Can I join with pre-settled status?
It depends on the force. The PSNI says pre-settled status is not eligible. The MOD Police needs sole British nationality. BTP asks for a permanent right to live and work, so ask it first. In Home Office forces and Police Scotland, EEA nationals qualify on nationality, but other nationals need indefinite leave to remain, which pre-settled status is not.
Can serving officers transfer to BTP, the MOD Police or the CNC?
BTP takes transferees from Home Office forces, Police Scotland and the PSNI, not from the MOD Police or CNC. The MOD Police NEOF route takes officers from UK civilian forces with two years' service. The CNC takes transferees from Home Office forces, Police Scotland, the PSNI, BTP and the MOD Police. The PSNI opened a Transferee Scheme on 12 October 2026.
What BMI do I need?
BTP has no maximum. The MOD Police wants 19 up to 30 and the CNC 18.5 to 30, both with body fat routes above that. Home Office forces treat 18 to 30 as a screen, not a pass mark. Police Scotland publishes 18 to 30 only on its rejoiner page. The PSNI publishes no number.
Is anything I enter stored?
No. Your answers stay in your browser while the page is open. We record only anonymous events: that the tool was started, how many forces landed in each status and which force link was clicked. None of your answers are recorded.
Is the PSNI recruiting now?
The PSNI's October 2026 student officer campaign is open and closes at 3pm on 30 November 2026.
