MOD Police
Recruitment Process
The Ministry of Defence Police recruits constables as armed counter terrorism officers for defence sites. It runs its own process, with a strict nationality rule, two interviews, a weighted-vest fitness test and security clearance. Written from MDP's own careers pages, read on 23 October 2026.
Independent information, not advice · Sources checked 23 October 2026 · England and Wales unless stated
Request an application pack on the MDP careers site and return it with your documents. If shortlisted, you have a 45-minute competency interview on Microsoft Teams and a 40-minute suitability interview at MDP Headquarters, RAF Wyton, plus a fitness test in a 20kg vest, a medical, Security Check clearance and police vetting. Offers are made as places become available, followed by 21 weeks of initial and firearms training. You must be a sole British national.
The role: armed policing of the defence estate
Under section 2 of the Ministry of Defence Police Act 1987, MDP officers have the powers of a constable on defence land and in defence vehicles, vessels and aircraft and elsewhere in the UK in connection with defence property and personnel. The new recruit role MDP advertises is PC Authorised Firearms Officer Counter Terrorism (AFO CT): armed patrol and response at defence sites, on a 40-hour week.
MDP is not a Home Office force and there is no PCDA, DHEP or PCEP. In England recruits are enrolled on the two-year Level 4 Non-Home Office Police Officer Apprenticeship, which ends in an External End Point Assessment; Scotland has its own two-year MDP programme. Advertised locations include HMNB Clyde and RNAD Coulport, Barrow-in-Furness, Fylingdales, Raynesway, AWE Aldermaston and AWE Burghfield, Porton Down and Welford.
Is the MOD Police recruiting now?
On 23 October 2026 MDP's current opportunities page listed two New Recruit roles (PC Authorised Firearms Officer Counter Terrorism and PC Tactical Firearms Unit) and six roles for serving or recent officers on the NEOF route (AFO CT, Tactical Firearms Unit, Special Escort Group, Marine Unit, National Firearms Instructor and Operational Support Unit). None shows a closing date, so treat them as open now. The application request form was live; MDP says a full application pack follows within 10 working days if you are eligible. The Operational Support Unit role has an online information session on Wednesday 4 November 2026, 6pm to 7pm (register by 11:45pm on Monday 2 November 2026). The GOV.UK recruitment page was last updated in March 2025, so use the MDP's own site. See where each role is based.
MOD Police eligibility: stricter than most forces
- Nationality: a sole British national holding a valid British passport. Dual nationals and foreign nationals cannot be accepted.
- Residency: at least five years' continuous UK residence before applying, rising to ten years for sites that need Developed Vetting. MDP's pages say service in the British armed forces or Crown service abroad counts as UK residence.
- Age: 18 or over when you apply; no upper age limit.
- Qualifications: Level 2 in both English and maths (for example GCSE grade 4 or C), with certificates sent with your application.
- Driving licence: a full UK manual car licence with no more than six penalty points.
- Tattoos and piercings: tattoos on the face, head, or neck forward of the ear or jawline mean automatic rejection; facial piercings are not allowed; flesh tunnels leaving a hole over 4mm mean automatic rejection.
- Finances: no outstanding county court judgments and you must not be registered bankrupt with outstanding debts.
- Convictions: ideally none. MDP lists "Type A" offences that always lead to rejection and "Type B" offences that almost certainly will. Failing to disclose usually means rejection.
The sole British nationality rule is unusual among UK forces and rules out many people who could join a Home Office force, including dual nationals. If it applies to you, look at the Civil Nuclear Constabulary, which publishes no sole-British rule (it checks nationality and right to work against national criteria), or our nationality guide for Home Office forces.
Can dual nationals join the MOD Police?
No. MDP's entry criteria say you must be a sole British national holding a valid British passport and that dual nationals and foreign nationals cannot be accepted. Giving up another nationality is a personal decision with its own consequences, so take advice before doing it for an application. The Civil Nuclear Constabulary and the 43 Home Office forces have no sole nationality rule. Check every rule in a minute with our free MOD Police eligibility checker.
The six MOD Police recruitment stages
| Stage | Name | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Application request | A short form to check you meet the essential requirements. If you do, MDP sends an application pack. |
| 2 | Application submission | Return the pack with the required documents (including Level 2 certificates and a driving record summary). It asks for vetting background, financial information and any previous police involvement. |
| 3 | Interviews | A 45-minute competency-based interview on Microsoft Teams with two assessors and a face-to-face suitability interview of about 40 minutes at MDP Headquarters, RAF Wyton. The fitness test may be on the same day as the suitability interview. |
| 4 | Medical, fitness and vetting | Medical and fitness test if not already done; Security Check (SC) clearance; police vetting; Developed Vetting for DV posts after your station is confirmed. |
| 5 | Hire | An offer as places become available, subject to final references. |
| 6 | Appointment and training | Paid from day one; 21 weeks of initial and firearms training, then development at your station. |
The two interviews
MDP uses two interviews, with different purposes:
| Competency-based interview | Suitability interview | |
|---|---|---|
| Format | Online, Microsoft Teams | Face to face at MDP Headquarters, RAF Wyton |
| Length | 45 minutes | About 40 minutes |
| Panel | Two assessors | Not stated |
| Assesses | Your skills and experience against the MDP Competency Framework | Understanding of the force, motivation, awareness of how the role may affect your personal life, the code of ethics, dealing with vulnerable people and safeguarding |
| Can be replaced? | Yes, by a full College of Policing online assessment pass with another force in the last 12 months | No |
| Same day | Not stated | The fitness test may be scheduled on the same day |
MDP's current pages name the "MDP Competency Framework" without listing it. Its archived 2023 interview guidance listed six competencies with the same titles as the College of Policing framework (We deliver, support and inspire; We are innovative and open-minded; We analyse critically; We are emotionally aware; We take ownership; We are collaborative), so they are the best guide we have. See our MOD Police interview questions guide. For the competency interview, prepare real examples structured with STAR (see our STAR answers guide). For the suitability interview, prepare to explain why you want an armed role on the defence estate, what you know about MDP, how shifts and possible relocation would affect your life and how you would treat vulnerable people and safeguarding concerns.
The MOD Police fitness test: the PES-JRFT
MDP recruits do not take the standard 5.4 bleep test. They take the Physical Employment Standards job-related fitness test (PES-JRFT), in two parts, wearing a 20kg weighted vest:
- Cover and Movement Shuttles (CMS): 15 shuttles over 20 metres to guided audio commands: a 60 metre "insertion" of 3 shuttles at 9 seconds each, then 12 repetitions alternating 8-second kneeling cover positions with movement.
- Casualty drag: drag a 76kg dummy 20 metres within 20 seconds, moving backwards with a double overhand grip at a 45-degree angle.
You get two attempts to pass both parts; if you do not pass, MDP says you can reapply after three months. Serving officers' fitness is assessed annually through the job-related fitness test. The 15m bleep test to 5.4 applies to inspectors and above. The Tactical Firearms Unit role at AWE also needs the multi-stage fitness test to level 10.5. Full detail: our PES-JRFT guide.
Train with weight on: loaded shuttle runs, sled or dummy drags and leg and grip strength. See our specialist role fitness standards page.
The MOD Police medical
- Eyesight: binocular vision of 6/7.5 with the weaker eye at least 6/12 (glasses or contacts allowed); unaided at least 6/36 unless corrected with soft lenses; near vision N8; set visual field; six weeks after laser surgery; colour vision tested.
- Hearing: the standard must be met without a hearing aid.
- BMI: 19 to below 30, with waist under 40 inches (men) or 35 inches (women); if outside these you may still qualify on waist-to-hip ratio or body fat.
- Blood pressure: consistently 140/90 or above is unsuitable.
- Drug and alcohol test as part of the medical.
Security vetting
Every new entrant needs Security Check (SC) clearance, started after the interview stage, plus police vetting. Some postings (MDP gives AWE, Menwith Hill and RNAD Coulport as examples of DV sites) need Developed Vetting, which is processed after your station is confirmed and SC is granted. MDP says that if you do not pass DV you are offered a different posting, without relocation expenses. Your application pack asks for vetting background and financial information, so gather your address, employment and family details early.
Training and firearms
- Where: the Defence School of Policing and Security, Southwick Park, Hampshire. Residential, with travel, food and accommodation provided.
- How long: 21 weeks in total: a 12-week residential course and the 9-week Initial Firearms Course, delivered at regional hubs to the College of Policing curriculum. Officers in Scotland add a two-week Scots law course.
- Pay: full salary from day one, as an MoD employee.
- After training: development at your station; annual firearms refresher training.
- Probation: the full two-year programme. In England it ends with an external End Point Assessment (knowledge checks, a professional discussion and a practical evaluation); in Scotland, exams and an assessed operational debrief.

Allowances depend on where you are posted, so total pay varies by site. MDP pay is its own scale, not the Home Office constable scale: use our MOD Police pay calculator for your site and the full scales for every rank.
Serving and recent officers: the NEOF route
MDP does not use the word transferee. Officers who are serving, or who left a UK civilian force (Home Office forces, BTP, CNC, PSNI or Police Scotland) within the last 36 months after two years' service and probation, apply as a New Entrant from Other Forces (NEOF). MDP lists no competency interview for NEOF applicants: the route is a NEOF suitability interview at RAF Wyton or another advised location, then the medical, fitness test, SC and police vetting. Training is shorter (for example a 5-day conversion course plus the 9-week firearms course) and you complete the remainder of a 12-month probation. The NEOF AFO CT and Marine adverts start at £33,222 (point 4). Anyone who left more than three years ago applies as a New Recruit. Read our NEOF transfer guide, including what moving from the police pension to the civil service alpha pension means.
MOD Police vs CNC vs a Home Office force

How to prepare for MOD Police recruitment
General PolicePay advice, not endorsed by MDP and no guarantee of any result.
- Confirm eligibility first: sole British nationality, five years' residence, Level 2 certificates, a manual licence with six points or fewer.
- Gather documents: certificates, driving record summary, address and employment history for SC.
- Prepare competency examples with STAR and rehearse them out loud for a 45-minute online interview.
- Prepare for the suitability interview: research MDP, its sites and role, the code of ethics and safeguarding and vulnerability.
- Train for the PES-JRFT with a weighted vest and drags, not just running.
- Plan for residential training in Hampshire. Postings are site by site; if a site needs DV and you do not get it, MDP may offer another site with no relocation expenses.
What we could not verify
- Closing dates, intake dates and how many posts each role will fill.
- The current MDP Competency Framework, the number of interview questions and how answers are scored (the six competencies above come from archived 2023 guidance).
- The pace of the 12 movement shuttles and how a late arrival is scored in the PES-JRFT.
- A reasonable adjustments statement. We found none on the MDP recruitment pages we read; ask MDP directly.
- Any psychological or firearms aptitude test at recruitment. The pages we read do not describe one.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I join the MOD Police?
Complete the application request form on the MDP careers site. If you meet the essential requirements you receive an application pack. After that come a competency-based interview on Microsoft Teams, a suitability interview at MDP Headquarters at RAF Wyton, a fitness test, a medical, Security Check clearance and police vetting, then an offer when a place is available and 21 weeks of initial and firearms training.
Do you have to be British to join the MOD Police?
Yes. MDP's entry criteria say you must be a sole British national holding a valid British passport and that dual nationals and foreign nationals cannot be accepted. You also need five years' continuous UK residence before applying, or ten years for sites that need Developed Vetting.
What is the MOD Police fitness test?
Recruits take the Physical Employment Standards job-related fitness test (PES-JRFT) wearing a 20kg weighted vest: 15 cover-and-movement shuttles over 20 metres and a drag of a 76kg dummy over 20 metres in 20 seconds or less. You get two attempts to pass both parts and can reapply after three months if you do not pass. The 15m bleep test to 5.4 applies to inspectors and above.
Does MOD Police use the National Sift or OAC?
No, MDP runs its own process. But its entry criteria say that if you passed the full College of Policing online assessment with another force within the last 12 months, MDP will accept it in place of its competency interview. You still need the suitability interview and the other stages. Assessments with forces that do not use the College process are not accepted.
What is the MOD Police suitability interview?
A face-to-face interview of about 40 minutes at MDP Headquarters, RAF Wyton. MDP says it assesses your understanding of the force, your motivation and your awareness of how the role may affect your personal life and covers the code of ethics, dealing with vulnerable people and safeguarding.
How much does a MOD Police officer earn?
MDP's constable scale from 1 September 2026 runs from £30,643 to £49,413. Allowances depend on posting: for example a London Allowance of £4,490 plus London Weighting of £3,261, South East allowances, priority posting allowances of up to £3,000 and 10% for unsocial hours. Officers are in the Civil Service pension scheme.
Where is MOD Police training?
MDP's training page names the Defence School of Policing and Security at Southwick Park, Hampshire. Initial training totals 21 weeks: a 12-week residential course and a 9-week Initial Firearms Course delivered at regional hubs. Officers in Scotland add a two-week Scots law module.
What vetting do MOD Police officers need?
Security Check (SC) clearance is the minimum for all new entrants, alongside police vetting. Some postings need Developed Vetting (DV), processed after your station is confirmed. MDP says that if you do not pass DV you are offered a different posting, without relocation expenses.
Can serving police officers transfer to the MOD Police?
Yes, through the New Entrant from Other Forces (NEOF) route: you must be serving, or have left a UK civilian force within the last 36 months, with two years' service and your probation complete. NEOF applicants have a suitability interview at RAF Wyton but no competency interview, shorter training and the remainder of a 12-month probation. You would move from the police pension into the civil service alpha scheme.
Is there an age limit for the MOD Police?
You must be 18 or over when you apply. MDP says there is no upper age limit.
