Independent information, not advice · Sources checked 23 October 2026 · England and Wales unless stated
New Recruits to the MOD Police have two interviews: a competency based interview on Teams and a face to face suitability interview at RAF Wyton about the force, your motivation, your personal life, ethics, vulnerability and safeguarding. This pack lets you practise both out loud against the clock, check your answers against what a strong answer shows and learn the facts about the force that the suitability interview tests. It is PolicePay's own material, not the MDP's.
The two MOD Police interviews
| Competency based interview | Suitability interview | |
|---|---|---|
| Where | Online, Microsoft Teams | Face to face at MDP Headquarters, RAF Wyton |
| Length | 45 minutes | About 40 minutes |
| Panel | Two assessors | Not stated |
| Covers | The MDP Competency Framework and your relevant skills and experience | Understanding of the force, motivation, how the role may affect your personal life, the code of ethics, vulnerable people and safeguarding |
| Who takes it | New Recruits (a College online assessment pass in the last 12 months can replace it) | New Recruits; NEOF applicants take the NEOF suitability interview |
| In the pack | 42 questions (7 for each competency title) plus a 5-question timed mock in the archived 2023 format | 40 questions across eight topics and a 6-question timed mock |
The MDP's current pages name the "MDP Competency Framework" but do not list its competencies. Its archived 2023 interview guidance listed six, with the same titles as the College of Policing framework, so the pack uses those six. If your invitation says something different, follow your invitation.
What is inside
- Competency question bank: 42 questions across We deliver, support and inspire; We are innovative and open-minded; We analyse critically; We are emotionally aware; We take ownership; We are collaborative. Examples suit applicants from civilian jobs, the armed forces, security and care work.
- Suitability question bank: 40 questions on knowing the MDP, motivation, your personal life, the Code of Ethics, vulnerability, safeguarding, the armed role and the NEOF route.
- For every question: what the assessor is trying to find out, the points a strong answer shows (tick the ones you hit to mark yourself), the follow-ups to expect, common pitfalls and a model answer.
- Timed mocks: one question at a time with a five-minute clock and an optional recording that stays on your device, then a review against the look-for points.
- Answer planner: plan one STAR example for each competency, saved in your browser.
- MOD Police primer: the facts the suitability interview expects you to know, each with its source, plus checklists for the Teams interview and the RAF Wyton day.
A two-week plan
- Days 1 to 2: read the primer and the MDP's own careers pages. Note what the force does and where it works.
- Days 3 to 6: plan one real example for each competency in the planner. Say each one out loud and keep it under five minutes.
- Days 7 to 9: work through the suitability topics, starting with the one you find hardest to talk about (often the effect on your personal life).
- Days 10 to 12: sit both timed mocks. Mark yourself honestly, then redo the two weakest answers.
- Days 13 to 14: run the checklists for your interview day. If the fitness test is on the same day as the suitability interview, rest and pack your kit.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are these real MOD Police interview questions?
No. Every question and model answer was written by PolicePay. The MDP does not publish its current interview questions. Our competency questions use the six competency titles in the MDP's archived 2023 interview guidance; our suitability questions cover the topics the MDP lists for the suitability interview.
What does the MOD Police competency interview involve?
The MDP says it is a 45-minute competency based interview on Microsoft Teams with two assessors, focusing on the MDP Competency Framework and your relevant skills and experience. A full College of Policing online assessment pass with another force in the last 12 months can be accepted in its place.
What does the suitability interview cover?
The MDP says it is face to face at MDP Headquarters, RAF Wyton, lasts about 40 minutes and covers your understanding of the force, your motivation, your awareness of how the role may affect your personal life, the code of ethics, dealing with vulnerable people and safeguarding. The fitness test may be on the same day.
I am a serving officer. Is the pack useful for the NEOF route?
Yes for the suitability interview, which NEOF applicants also take. The MDP lists no competency interview for NEOF applicants, so focus on the suitability questions; the pack marks the questions written for serving officers.
How long do I have access?
12 months from the day you buy, for one payment of £24.99. Nothing renews. Your marks, mock history and answer plans are kept in the browser you use.
Can I get a refund?
Yes. Ask within 14 days for a full refund, no reason needed: reply to your receipt or email andrew@policepay.co.uk.
