Pay Scales 2026

Every Ministry of Defence Police pay scale from 1 September 2026, each allowance and the site it belongs to, the overtime and unsocial hours rules and what the MDP does not publish. Written from the MDP's own pay page and the Defence Police Federation's 2026/27 circular, read on 23 October 2026.

Short answer: what does the MOD Police pay?

From 1 September 2026 an MDP constable earns £30,643 (point 2) to £49,413 (point 8) basic pay for a 40-hour week. New Recruits start on point 2; the NEOF AFO CT and Marine adverts for serving officers start at £33,222. Site allowances add up to £6,105 at AWE (South East Higher plus priority posting). On top come 10% of hourly pay for each full hour between 2100 and 0500, £35 per 24 hours on call and overtime at time and a third. The 2026/27 rise was 3.5%.

MOD Police constable pay scale from 1 September 2026

The MDP has its own constable scale. It is not the England and Wales scale and it is numbered differently: it runs from point 2 to point 8 and the MDP publishes no point 1. Every MDP constable is an armed officer on a 40-hour week.

MDP constable pay from 1 September 2026 (MDP pay page). Monthly and hourly figures are our arithmetic: annual pay divided by 12 or by 2080 hours (40 hours times 52 weeks).

Point 8£49,413£4,118£23.76+£7,096

The steps are small at the bottom and large at the top. Points 2 to 5 are about £1,300 apart; point 7 to point 8 is a £7,096 jump. Over the whole scale basic pay rises by £18,770 (our arithmetic).

What this means for you

  • Your basic pay is the same everywhere. The point decides basic pay. Where you are posted only changes the allowances.
  • The hourly figure is ours. The MDP does not publish an hourly rate or the formula it uses for overtime and unsocial hours. Treat our hourly figures as a guide.
  • The top of the scale is where the money is. Most of the scale's growth sits in points 6 to 8. How long it takes to get there is not published (see what the MDP does not publish).

MOD Police pay for every rank: sergeant to assistant chief constable

The MDP pay page lists a scale for each rank up to assistant chief constable. It does not number the points for ranks above constable, so the table gives each published figure from lowest to highest.

Promotion from the top of the constable scale (£49,413) to the bottom of the sergeant scale (£52,671) is worth £3,258 in basic pay (our arithmetic). Inspector starts at £62,700, which is £7,433 above the top of the sergeant scale.

For promotion exams, the MDP recognises some passes gained in other forces when you join: see the NEOF transfer guide.

The MOD Police pay rise 2026: 3.5% and how it is set

MDP officers are not covered by the Police Remuneration Review Body. The PRRB's remit is the federated and superintending ranks in England and Wales. MDP pay is set by the Ministry of Defence.

  • The agreement: the Defence Police Federation (DPF) says the MOD applies the Home Office award "in line with the long-standing agreement with the Department".
  • The 2026/27 award: 3.5% on basic pay for all ranks and pay points from 1 September 2026 (DPF Circular 33/26).
  • The Home Office award it follows: the PRRB recommended 3.9% for England and Wales; the Government awarded 3.5% from 1 September 2026 (HCWS264).
  • Dog handlers: the Dog Handlers' Allowance is £3,048 from 1 September 2026.

What is still waiting

DPF Circular 33/26 says three changes wait on amendments to the Police Regulations 2003 after a Home Office consultation: Maternity Support Leave, Adoption Support Leave and removing the 10-day qualifying period for the Acting Up Allowance. None of them is in force for MDP officers on the date we checked.

Old pay figures are still online

The MDP rebuilt its website in 2025/26. Old pages and PDFs with earlier pay figures have gone, but other sites still quote them. The MDP pay page now shows only the rates from 1 September 2026. If a figure you have seen is lower than the table above, it is probably an older year's rate.

MOD Police allowances: London, South East and priority postings

Allowances are where MDP pay differs most between officers. They depend on the site you are posted to, not your rank or point.

Which sites carry allowances

  • AWE Group (Aldermaston and Burghfield, Berkshire): South East Allowance (Higher) of £3,105 and a priority posting allowance of £3,000. This includes the Tactical Firearms Unit and the Special Escort Group, which are based in the AWE Group.
  • Croughton and Welford: South East Allowance (Higher), £3,105.
  • Oakhanger, Portsmouth and Southwick Park: South East Allowance (Lower), £2,070.
  • Barrow-in-Furness: priority posting allowance, £3,000.
  • Vulcan, Dounreay: priority posting allowance, £2,000.
  • Special Escort Group: a priority posting allowance of £2,000.
  • London: the MDP London Allowance (£4,490) and MDP London Weighting (£3,261).

Pay at each New Recruit site

The New Recruit AFO CT advert named nine sites on 23 October 2026. Here is what the published allowances mean at each one, at the bottom and top of the constable scale (our arithmetic, before tax and pension).

At AWE a New Recruit's first-year package is £6,105 more than at a site with no listed allowance. That is more than the whole gap between point 2 and point 5 (£3,876, our arithmetic).

Sites not named on the pay page, such as HMNB Clyde, RNAD Coulport, Fylingdales, Raynesway and Porton Down, have no allowance listed. That does not prove nothing is paid there, but nothing is published. Parliament was told in April 2026 that the MDP has a "targeted retention bonus for hard to recruit locations" (written answer 98164). The answer does not name the locations. For the full station list, see MOD Police stations.

Priority posting pay stops when you leave the site

The MDP says priority posting allowances are paid pro rata while you are based at the site and eligible. If you move to a site without one, the payment stops. Do not take on a mortgage or rent that only works with an allowance you could lose.

Specialist role pay ranges in MDP adverts

Specialist adverts quote ranges that include allowances. The MDP does not break them down.

PC AFO CT and PC Marine Unit AFO CT (NEOF)From £33,222See the NEOF guideNEOF AFO CT and Marine adverts

Our arithmetic, not the MDP's explanation: the Tactical Firearms Unit New Recruit range is exactly point 2 to point 8 plus the South East Allowance (Higher) and the AWE priority posting allowance (£30,643 + £3,105 + £3,000 = £36,748). The NEOF TFU range starts from point 4 on the same basis (£39,327) and the Special Escort Group range adds the £2,000 SEG priority posting allowance (£41,327). So these roles do not pay a higher basic scale: the extra comes from where they are based.

There is no published firearms or specialist role allowance. Every operational MDP officer is an Authorised Firearms Officer Counter Terrorism, so being armed is the basic job. The Dog Handlers' Allowance is the one role allowance the DPF circular names.

Pick your pay point and site to see basic pay plus the published allowances for that site and an estimate of take-home pay. The calculator never treats an allowance as pensionable, because the MDP does not publish which ones are.

  • Base hourly rate is our assumption: basic pay divided by 52.143 weeks and the 40-hour week (£14.69 an hour here). The MDP does not publish its formula.
  • Pension is worked out on basic pay only, at the alpha rate for that band. The MDP does not publish which allowances are pensionable.
  • Priority posting allowances are paid pro rata while you are based at the site and eligible. The MDP page names the SEG payment the "Specialist Escort Group" allowance; it does not say how it combines with the AWE payment, so the SEG option is our assumption.
  • The DPF calls £4,490 the "maximum" London Allowance and the MDP does not say whether every London post gets it in full, so the London option shows the most you could receive.
  • Tax uses 2026/27 bands with the standard personal allowance and no other income. Student loans and salary sacrifice are not included.

Worked examples: what MDP officers are paid by site

Basic pay plus the published site allowances for a year (our arithmetic from the MDP pay page). These leave out unsocial hours, on-call and overtime, which depend on your roster.

Constable on point 8 at AWE Group£49,413South East (Higher) £3,105 + priority posting £3,000£55,518

Adding unsocial hours and overtime

Take a New Recruit on point 2 at AWE Aldermaston (£36,748 with allowances). Suppose in a year they work 400 full hours between 2100 and 0500, 7 days on call and 40 hours of casual overtime. These hours are an example, not a published MDP roster. On our arithmetic:

  • Unsocial hours: 400 x £1.47 = £589
  • On-call: 7 x £35 = £245
  • Casual overtime: 40 x £19.64 = £786
  • Total before tax and pension: about £38,368

Unsocial hours enhancements are 10% of an hour's pay, so they add up slowly: 400 hours adds less than £600 a year at point 2. The site you are posted to usually matters more than the hours you work.

MOD Police pay vs England and Wales police pay

Both forces got 3.5% from 1 September 2026, so the gap between the two scales is built in, not this year's award. The England and Wales figures are ours: calculated from the PRRB's published scales plus the 3.5% award and rounded to the pound. The Home Office's own rounded figures may differ by a few pounds.

For the Civil Nuclear Constabulary, the other armed national force, see CNC pay scales. For the two forces side by side, read CNC vs MOD Police.

Pension deductions from MDP pay

MDP officers automatically join the Civil Service pension scheme, alpha, not a police pension scheme. The member rate depends on your pensionable earnings. Employers pay 28.97%.

Points 2 to 5 fall in the 4.6% band and points 6 to 8 in the 5.45% band on basic pay. If any allowance is pensionable, it could move you into the next band; the MDP does not publish which allowances count. The pension age is different from Home Office police. Read the full story in our MOD Police pension guide.

What the MDP does not publish about pay

  • Pay progression rules. The points are published; how and when you move up them is not.
  • Which allowances are pensionable. Not on the pay page or the DPF circular.
  • A firearms allowance. None is listed. Every operational officer is armed.
  • How a NEOF officer's starting point is set. The NEOF AFO CT and Marine adverts start at £33,222 and the OSU advert at £30,643; the rule behind it is not published.
  • Whether the London Allowance is a fixed sum or a maximum. The DPF calls it the maximum London Allowance.
  • Public holiday overtime rates and any shift allowance other than unsocial hours.
  • Relocation packages or mobility payments. Not on the pages we read.
  • Pay scales before 1 September 2026. The pay page now shows only the current rates.
  • An official hourly rate formula. Our hourly figures divide by 2080 hours.

Ask the MDP recruitment team or the Defence Police Federation if any of these matter to your decision.

Common mistakes when reading MDP pay

  1. Reading "point 2" as the national point 2. MDP point 2 is the bottom of the MDP's own scale, £30,643. It is not the England and Wales point 2.
  2. Taking the top of an advert range as a starting salary. Advert ranges run to point 8 plus allowances. A New Recruit starts on point 2.
  3. Adding every allowance together. Allowances depend on your site. Only AWE combines the South East Allowance (Higher) with a priority posting allowance on the published list.
  4. Counting on a firearms allowance. There is none listed.
  5. Treating unsocial hours as a flat 10% of salary. It is 10% of the hourly rate, for full hours between 2100 and 0500 only.
  6. Using an old figure. Check the date on any MDP pay figure you find. The MDP's current rates are from 1 September 2026.
  7. Assuming police pension deductions. MDP officers are in alpha, with different rates and a different pension age.
Quick answers

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a MOD Police constable earn in 2026?

From 1 September 2026 the MDP constable scale runs from £30,643 at point 2 to £49,413 at point 8. There is no published point 1. Allowances depend on your site: for example £3,105 South East Allowance (Higher) at AWE and Welford plus a £3,000 priority posting allowance at AWE and Barrow-in-Furness.

What is the MOD Police pay rise for 2026?

3.5% on basic pay for all ranks and pay points from 1 September 2026. The Defence Police Federation says the MOD applies the Home Office award in line with a long-standing agreement and the Home Office award for England and Wales was 3.5% from the same date. The PRRB had recommended 3.9%.

Is MOD Police pay set by the Police Remuneration Review Body?

No. MDP officers are outside the PRRB's remit, which covers federated and superintending ranks in England and Wales. Pay is set by the Ministry of Defence, which applies the Home Office award by agreement.

What does a new MOD Police recruit start on?

New Recruits start on point 2, £30,643: the New Recruit advert gives £30,643 to £49,413 depending on location and allowances. The NEOF AFO CT and Marine Unit adverts for serving or recent officers start at £33,222, which is point 4 (the NEOF Operational Support Unit advert gives £30,643 to £49,413). The MDP does not publish how a NEOF officer's previous service sets their starting point.

Do MOD Police officers get a firearms allowance?

The MDP does not list one. Every operational MDP officer is an Authorised Firearms Officer, so being armed is part of the basic role rather than a paid extra. Do not budget for a firearms allowance that the MDP does not publish.

How much is MOD Police overtime?

Casual overtime is paid at time and a third. Working a rest day with less than 15 days' notice is paid at time and a half, or you can take time off in lieu. On our arithmetic (basic pay divided by 2080 hours) an hour of casual overtime at point 2 is about £19.64. The MDP does not publish its own hourly rate formula.

What is the MOD Police unsocial hours allowance?

10% of your base hourly rate for every full hour worked between 2100 and 0500. A shift that covers the whole window earns 8 hours of the enhancement. On our arithmetic that is about £11.79 at point 2.

How fast do you move up the MOD Police pay scale?

The MDP does not publish its progression rules on its careers pages: it gives the points but not how or when you move between them. Ask the MDP recruitment team or the Defence Police Federation before relying on a yearly step.

Are MOD Police allowances pensionable?

The MDP does not publish which allowances count for pension. Our pension figures on this page use basic pay only. If an allowance is pensionable, it could move you into a higher alpha contribution band.
