The PSNI's October 2026 student officer campaign (Campaign 2610) opened at 9am on Monday 12 October 2026 and closes at 3pm on Monday 30 November 2026. Reasonable adjustment evidence is due by 5pm the same day. The Initial Selection Test follows in December 2026, results are likely in January 2027 and the Evidence Uploader is in late January 2027. Assessment Centres run from spring to summer 2027 and the merit list follows in summer 2027. The PSNI says dates are subject to change.
PSNI recruitment 2026 in short
The PSNI recruits student officers in fixed campaigns, not all year round. The current one is the October 2026 campaign, which the PSNI's Guidance for Applicants calls "Campaign 2610". On 23 October 2026 the PSNI's recruitment site showed it as open, with the current stage being the Online Application Stage.
- Opened: 9am on Monday 12 October 2026.
- Closes: 3pm on Monday 30 November 2026.
- Initial Selection Test: December 2026 (exact dates to be confirmed).
- Evidence Uploader: late January 2027 (exact date to be confirmed, 12 noon deadline).
- Assessment Centre: spring to summer 2027 (to be confirmed).
- Merit list: summer 2027 (to be confirmed).
The PSNI launched the campaign on its 25th anniversary with a seven-week advertising campaign. Deloitte runs the application, the IST, the evidence check and the Assessment Centre for the PSNI (the "Deloitte Managed Stages"). The PSNI then runs vetting, the fitness test, online learning, the health assessment and the substance misuse test (the "PSNI Managed Stages").
The PSNI says its campaign dates are subject to change and several are still "to be confirmed". This page shows what the PSNI published on 23 October 2026. Always check your candidate emails and joinpsni.co.uk before relying on a date.

The 8 stages and who runs them
The PSNI says "The recruitment process is made up of 8 different stages, all of which you must pass to be invited to your induction event at the Police College." Deloitte, contracted as the PSNI's independent recruitment agent, runs the first three. The PSNI runs the rest.
| # | Stage (the PSNI's name) | Run by | October 2026 campaign |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Online Application Stage | Deloitte | 9am on Monday 12 October 2026 to 3pm on Monday 30 November 2026 |
| 2 | Online IST / Evidence Uploader | Deloitte | IST December 2026 (exact dates to be confirmed); uploader late January 2027 (exact date to be confirmed, 12 noon deadline) |
| 3 | Assessment Centre | Deloitte | spring to summer 2027 (to be confirmed); merit list summer 2027 (to be confirmed) |
| 4 | Vetting | PSNI | No date published |
| 5 | Physical Competence Assessment (PCA) | PSNI | No date published |
| 6 | Online Learning | PSNI | No date published |
| 7 | Health Assessment | PSNI | No date published |
| 8 | Substance Misuse Test | PSNI | No date published |
The split matters for questions. Up to the merit list, your contact is through the Deloitte-run process and your campaign emails. After it, the PSNI's own teams take over, for example the Service Vetting Unit for vetting. Our how to join the PSNI hub covers every stage in detail.
The age cut-off for this campaign
The PSNI's age rule is tied to each campaign's closing date. For Campaign 2610: "Your 17th birthday must be on or before" 30 November 2026 and "Your 58th birthday must be after this date". You can apply from 17 but must be 18 on appointment.
| The PSNI's rule | What it means for your date of birth (our arithmetic) | |
|---|---|---|
| Youngest you can be | Your 17th birthday must be on or before 30 November 2026 | Born on or before 30 November 2009 |
| Oldest you can be | Your 58th birthday must be after 30 November 2026 | Born on or after 1 December 1968 |
| On appointment | You must be 18 when appointed | Applying at 17 is fine; you cannot start before 18 |
So the upper limit is 57 at the closing date. If you turn 58 on or before 30 November 2026, you cannot apply in this campaign. If you turn 17 on 1 December 2026 or later, you will need to wait for a future campaign. For the rest of the rules, see our PSNI eligibility requirements guide.
The application: one sitting, 90 minutes, by 3pm on 30 November
The Online Application Stage is stage 1 of the PSNI's 8 stages. What the PSNI says about it:
- The form must be completed "within one sitting" and "within a maximum of 90 minutes".
- You need your National Insurance number.
- It includes an Equality Monitoring Form (Part A) and a Recruitment Efficiency Monitoring Form (Part B). The equality form is not seen by assessors.
- Only one application per person per campaign. Duplicates "may result in your disqualification".
- When you submit you see an "Application Submitted" message on screen. An email follows within 10 working days. There is no instant email.
- You get a Unique Identifier (UID). Keep it: it is your reference for the rest of the campaign.
- Reasonable adjustment requests go in the "Test and Assessment Arrangements" section.
If you submit on the closing day, Monday 30 November, 10 working days takes you to Monday 14 December (our arithmetic, not counting any holidays). That may overlap with the IST window. Applying earlier means your confirmation arrives well before December.
Before you open the form
- Have your National Insurance number to hand.
- Check you meet the age, right to work and education rules.
- Decide whether you need reasonable adjustments.
- Use an email address you check every day and will keep for the whole campaign.
- Block out 90 minutes with no interruptions on a reliable connection.
The reasonable adjustments deadline
If you have a disability or condition that affects how you take tests or assessments, ask for reasonable adjustments in the "Test and Assessment Arrangements" section of your application. For this campaign the PSNI says reasonable adjustment evidence is due by 5pm on 30 November 2026 for the initial phase.
That is two hours after applications close. In practice, it means getting supporting evidence together in November, not after you apply. The PSNI says the deductive reasoning time limit in the IST may vary for reasonable adjustments, so this deadline can affect your December test.
December 2026: the Initial Selection Test
The IST is stage 2. The PSNI's timeline says it is in December 2026 with exact dates to be confirmed. It is online, through a unique link to SHL's TalentCentral platform sent by email. It has two elements:
- Verify Interactive Deductive Reasoning: timed (18 minutes as standard), interactive and adaptive, built around 12 pieces of source material.
- Global Skills Assessment (GSA): not timed, forced choice, mapped to the CVF.
The scores are combined against one pass mark, which is not published. You get one attempt per campaign and there are no exemptions, even if you passed before. Results are likely January 2027.
The six weeks before December are the best time to practise the deductive element. Read our PSNI Initial Selection Test guide and try the free deductive reasoning practice. For the questionnaire, see our Global Skills Assessment guide.
Late January 2027: the Evidence Uploader
Only candidates who pass the IST go on to the Evidence Uploader. You upload evidence of:
- 5 GCSEs (or equivalent) at grade A* to C, including English Language (grades 9 to 4 count as A* to C); and
- your Right to Work in the UK.
For this campaign the uploader is in late January 2027 (exact date to be confirmed, 12 noon deadline). The PSNI says your education must be achieved by the uploader closing date. It also says only applicants who meet the education criteria and are deemed to have the Right to Work in the UK will be permitted to progress to the Assessment Centre.
Missing the uploader means missing the Assessment Centre. Two things worth knowing now: GCSE English "Talking and Listening" on its own does not count as English Language and the PSNI names uploading too much evidence and the wrong English evidence as problems. Check your qualifications with our free qualifications checker before Christmas.
Spring to summer 2027: the Assessment Centre
The Assessment Centre is stage 3. For this campaign the PSNI says spring to summer 2027 (to be confirmed). What the PSNI publishes about it:
- Held in and around Belfast, mostly in weekday morning and afternoon sessions, with some evenings.
- Written exercises and role plays in a simulated policing environment, where you take the role of a constable.
- Assessed against the College of Policing CVF at Level 1 (Practitioner).
- No traditional experience-based interview.
- May include an IST re-test and a check on your computer literacy.
- May last up to 3.5 to 4 hours, with some waiting time between exercises.
- Invitations may be held until as late as one week before your appointment, for security reasons.
That last point matters for planning: you may get only a week's notice of your Assessment Centre date. If you work shifts or have caring responsibilities, think now about how you would cover a weekday session at short notice. Read our PSNI Assessment Centre guide for more.
The merit list and interim merit lists
Candidates who pass the Assessment Centre go on a merit list that Deloitte passes to the PSNI. For this campaign the PSNI says summer 2027 (to be confirmed).
The PSNI also reserves the right to progress top performers from early assessment centres through "interim merit lists". In other words, if your Assessment Centre is early in the spring and you do well, you may move into the PSNI Managed Stages before the main list is passed over.
After the PSNI Managed Stages, the PSNI says "Appointable candidates will be invited forward in merit order" and you will be contacted with an offer in merit order when a place becomes available. The PSNI does not publish how merit order is calculated.
The PSNI Managed Stages
Once you are on a merit list, the PSNI takes over. Its How Do I Join page lists the stages as vetting, the Physical Competence Assessment, online learning, the health assessment and the substance misuse test. Its homepage graphic shows a slightly different order, so do not expect a strict sequence. No dates are published for these stages.
| Stage | What happens | Time-related rules the PSNI publishes |
|---|---|---|
| Vetting | Part 1 Vetting Questionnaire and Part 2 HM Government Security Questionnaire, both returned within two weeks of receiving them | No time estimate: Police Vetting and National Security Vetting are separate processes |
| Physical Competence Assessment (PCA) | Three laps of an obstacle course within 4 minutes 30 seconds, after an optional familiarisation session | One re-test 12 weeks after the first attempt if needed |
| Online Learning | About 16 hours of eLearning | Within a 4 week period |
| Health Assessment | With an Occupational Health Nursing Adviser | Up to 90 minutes |
| Substance Misuse Test | Hair test, normally the same day as the health assessment | A retest is needed if you are not appointed within 12 months of the first result |
Two of these have clocks you control. Vetting forms must be returned within two weeks of receiving them, so start gathering addresses, employment history and family details early: see our PSNI vetting guide. The PCA is three laps in 4 minutes 30 seconds, so start training months before: see our PSNI fitness test guide.
Induction and training
Appointable candidates are invited forward in merit order when a place becomes available. The steps from there:
- Induction Day at the Police College: the training team, university representatives, uniform fitting and a personal security briefing. You are told your policing district here.
- Pre Entry Knowledge Course: about 20 hours, done between induction and day one. You must complete it to start.
- Student Officer Development Programme: 22 weeks at the Police College, Belfast.
The PSNI has not published 2027 intake dates or intake sizes. Our PSNI training and probation guide covers the 22 weeks and what follows.
How long the whole process takes
The honest answer: the PSNI publishes how long its own recruitment agent's stages usually take, but not the whole process.
- Deloitte Managed Stages: the PSNI says these "usually run for approximately 6-9 months from the launch of applications". From a 12 October 2026 launch, that points to roughly mid-April to mid-July 2027 (our arithmetic), which fits the published spring to summer Assessment Centre and summer merit list.
- PSNI Managed Stages: no overall time is published. The PSNI says Police Vetting and National Security Vetting are separate processes, so it gives no time estimate for vetting.
- Offer: made in merit order when a place becomes available. No 2027 intake dates are published.
On 4 August 2026 the PSNI said the merit lists from its 2025 and 2021 campaigns were still "being managed by the PSNI External Recruitment Team". Evidence to the Police Remuneration Review Body records that from the 2021 campaign around 30% of candidates withdrew and a further 240 were removed by pre-employment checks. This is context from earlier campaigns, not a forecast for this one.
What this means for you: plan for a process measured in many months, keep your circumstances stable where you can and tell the PSNI about any change it asks to hear about (such as a new address or relationship) during vetting.
The January 2026 campaign: what happened
The most recent completed campaign shows how a PSNI campaign moves in practice.
| Milestone | January 2026 campaign (2601) |
|---|---|
| Opened | 14 January 2026 |
| Closed | 3pm on 4 February 2026 |
| Applications | 4,104 |
| Assessment Centre results issued | 30 July 2026 |
| Merit list | Transferred to the PSNI; candidates now in the PSNI Managed Stages |
From launch to Assessment Centre results took about six and a half months (14 January to 30 July 2026, our arithmetic). That sits inside the PSNI's 6 to 9 month range for the Deloitte Managed Stages. The October 2026 campaign has a longer application window (seven weeks rather than three), so its later stages may not run to the same pace.
The PSNI also published the community background of January 2026 applicants: Protestant 65.6%, Catholic 26.7% and undetermined 7.7%, with 63.5% male and 36.5% female.
Applicant numbers over the years
How many people apply to the PSNI? These are the figures in the PRRB's 2025 Northern Ireland report and the PSNI's own news. Years not shown are not in the sources we used, which does not mean there was no campaign.
| Campaign | Applications | Source |
|---|---|---|
| 2013 | 7,493 | PRRB-NI-2025 footnote 16 |
| 2014 | 5,856 | PRRB-NI-2025 footnote 16 |
| 2015 | 5,498 | PRRB-NI-2025 footnote 16 |
| 2017 | 7,695 | PRRB-NI-2025 footnote 16 |
| 2018 | 6,243 | PRRB-NI-2025 footnote 16 |
| 2020 | 6,879 | PRRB-NI-2025 footnote 16 |
| 2021 | 5,311 | PRRB-NI-2025 footnote 16 |
| 2025 | 4,822 | PSNI news, 2026 |
| 2026 (January campaign) | 4,104 | PSNI news, 2026 |
| October 2026 (Campaign 2610) | Open: not yet published | Check PSNI news after the closing date |
The January 2026 campaign had 718 fewer applications than 2025, a fall of about 15% (our arithmetic). The PSNI does not publish how many candidates pass each stage on the pages we checked, so these totals tell you about interest, not your chances.
What to do now: a week-by-week plan
A plan from today (23 October 2026) to the closing date and on into 2027. These are PolicePay suggestions built around the PSNI's published dates.
| When | What to do | Where to start |
|---|---|---|
| Now to Sunday 1 November | Check you are eligible: age cut-off, right to work, 5 GCSEs (or equivalent) at A* to C including English Language. Find your certificates and National Insurance number. Read the Guidance for Applicants. If you need reasonable adjustments, start gathering evidence. | Qualifications checker; eligibility guide |
| Week of 2 November | Set aside 90 minutes in one sitting and submit your application. Note your UID. Start deductive reasoning practice, untimed, to learn the method. | Free deductive practice |
| Week of 9 November | Watch for the confirmation email (it can take up to 10 working days). Try SHL's own interactive practice. Send any reasonable adjustment evidence. | IST guide |
| Week of 16 November | Timed deductive practice three times. Read the CVF and do the GSA self-reflection exercise. | GSA guide |
| Week of 23 November | Last full week to apply. If you have not applied, do it now, not on the final day. Check your PC or laptop and connection for the IST. | Your application confirmation |
| Monday 30 November | Applications close at 3pm. Reasonable adjustment evidence is due by 5pm on 30 November 2026. | Nothing new: this is the deadline, not a target |
| December (dates to be confirmed) | Watch your inbox and junk folder for the SHL TalentCentral link. Sit the IST once, rested, in one quiet sitting. | IST guide |
| Late December | Put your GCSE (or equivalent) certificates and Right to Work evidence in one folder ready for the uploader. | Qualifications checker |
| January 2027 | IST results (likely). If you pass, upload your evidence in late January before the 12 noon deadline. | Eligibility guide |
| February onwards | Prepare for the Assessment Centre: written exercises and role plays in the role of a constable, assessed against the CVF. | Assessment Centre guide |
For a plan that fits your own start date and the hours you have each week, use the free PSNI campaign planner.
Alongside the plan: start fitness training
The PCA is not until after the merit list, but it is three laps of an obstacle course in 4 minutes 30 seconds and there is only one re-test. Starting gentle training now, alongside IST practice, means you are not starting from scratch in 2027. See our PSNI fitness test guide.
Your situation and the dates
The same timeline lands differently depending on your circumstances. These invented examples apply the PSNI's published rules to common situations.
| Situation (invented) | What the published rules mean for the timeline |
|---|---|
| Turning 17 on 2 December 2026 | Too young for this campaign: the 17th birthday must be on or before 30 November 2026. Watch for the next campaign. |
| Turning 17 on 30 November 2026 | Can apply in this campaign. You must be 18 on appointment. The PSNI does not publish start dates, so ask the recruitment team if timing looks tight. |
| Turning 58 on 30 November 2026 | Cannot apply: the 58th birthday must be after 30 November 2026. |
| Turning 58 on 1 December 2026 | Can apply: the 58th birthday falls after the cut-off date. |
| Resitting GCSE English in summer 2027 | Too late for this campaign: education must be achieved by the uploader closing date in late January 2027. A future campaign may fit. |
| Have a degree but lost GCSE certificates | A UK or Irish undergraduate or Masters degree is accepted as full proof of education. Find the degree certificate before late January. |
| Living in Great Britain, not Northern Ireland | No residency requirement to apply. The IST is online; the Assessment Centre is in and around Belfast, possibly at a week's notice. |
| Lived abroad in the last 3 years | Vetting needs a checkable three-year history and you may need criminal record certificates from those countries. Start early, as vetting forms are due within two weeks. |
| Shift worker | Plan cover for a weekday Assessment Centre session in spring or summer 2027, with possibly only a week's notice. |
| Serving constable in another UK force | Choose the Transferee Scheme (open since 12 October 2026) or the student officer route. Transferee eligibility details are sent by email on request. |
Unsure where you stand? The free qualifications checker covers age, right to work and education against the published rules.
Documents by deadline
Each stage asks for different paperwork. Gathering it in the order you will need it takes the pressure off each deadline.
| When you need it | What | Notes from the PSNI's pages |
|---|---|---|
| By 3pm on Monday 30 November 2026 | National Insurance number | Needed to complete the online application. |
| By 5pm on 30 November 2026 | Reasonable adjustment evidence (if you need adjustments) | Requests go in the Test and Assessment Arrangements section of the form. |
| Late January 2027 (12 noon deadline) | Education evidence | 5 GCSEs (or equivalent) at A* to C including English Language. A UK or Irish undergraduate or Masters degree is accepted as full proof. |
| Late January 2027 (12 noon deadline) | Right to Work evidence | UK and Irish nationals qualify automatically. Biometric Residence Permits are not accepted: use a Share Code. |
| Assessment Centre, spring to summer 2027 | Photo ID, your own pens and a wristwatch | Accepted ID includes a passport, photo driving licence, NI electoral identity card, EU national identity card, HM Forces ID card or Citizen Card. No phones or smart devices. |
| Vetting (within two weeks of receiving the forms) | Addresses, history, family and associates details | Part 1 Vetting Questionnaire and Part 2 HM Government Security Questionnaire. |
| PSNI Managed Stages | Tattoo photos and descriptions (if you have tattoos) | Size, location, nature, full wording and a verified translation where needed. |
| Health Assessment | Medical Health Questionnaire and any reports | Completed by you and your GP. Bring reports on any conditions. |
For vetting, start a simple file now with your addresses and employment for recent years. The PSNI says vetting needs a checkable three-year history and anyone who lived outside the UK or Republic of Ireland in the last 3 years may need to provide a criminal record certificate from those countries. See our PSNI vetting guide.
Keep your dates private
The PSNI's "Your Security" page says the local situation can expose officers "or those applying to be police officers" to "a higher level of personal risk than most other people". Its advice to applicants:
- be discreet about your application, especially the dates and locations of assessments, induction and training;
- tell only people you trust;
- take care on social media;
- keep your documents secure;
- do not share Assessment Centre dates or venues online.
This page lists the PSNI's published campaign dates, which are public. Your own dates are not. Do not post your IST day, Assessment Centre slot or start date in public groups or on social media. Personal security is also one of the topics at the Induction Day.
Other PSNI routes open now
| Route | Status on 23 October 2026 | More |
|---|---|---|
| Transferee Scheme (serving constables, including detective constables, in other forces) | Open since 12 October 2026. Run by the PSNI, not Deloitte. Register by email for eligibility and process details. | Transferee Scheme guide |
| Call Handler (police staff) | Open. Closes 3pm on Monday 9 November 2026. | Staff and call handler jobs |
| Administrative Support Officer (police staff) | Recruitment opens 9 November 2026. | Staff and call handler jobs |
Serving officers may apply through either the Transferee Scheme or the student officer route. Police staff recruitment has its own separate IST. Applying to other police forces at the same time as the PSNI is allowed.
Timeline mistakes to avoid
| Mistake | Why it costs you |
|---|---|
| Applying on 30 November | The form needs one sitting of up to 90 minutes and closes at 3pm. A problem on the day leaves no time to fix it. |
| Waiting for an instant email | There is none. The email comes within 10 working days. The on-screen message and your UID are your proof. |
| Sending adjustment evidence late | It is due by 5pm on 30 November 2026 for the initial phase. |
| Two applications to be safe | Only one per campaign. Duplicates may result in disqualification. |
| Not checking the age rule | It is fixed to 30 November 2026: 17th birthday on or before, 58th birthday after. |
| Assuming the IST can be re-sat | One attempt per campaign. No exemptions for past passes. |
| Hunting for certificates in late January | The uploader has a 12 noon deadline. Find them before Christmas. |
| Being caught out by Assessment Centre notice | Invitations may come as late as one week before. Plan cover in advance. |
| Leaving fitness until the PCA invitation | Three laps in 4 minutes 30 seconds with only one re-test 12 weeks later. |
| Posting your dates online | The PSNI asks applicants to be discreet about dates and locations. |
If you miss this campaign or need to defer
PSNI recruitment runs in fixed campaigns, not all year round. If 30 November 2026 is too soon for you, or something changes during the process, here is what the PSNI publishes:
- Future campaigns: the PSNI does not publish dates in advance. The two most recent student officer campaigns opened in January 2026 and October 2026.
- Reapplying: there is no restriction on reapplying after rejection.
- No carry-over: IST exemptions are not available, so you sit the IST again in each campaign.
- Deferral: deferral requests are considered individually and are valid only while the campaign remains active.
- Rescheduling the IST: only in very exceptional circumstances, such as bereavement.
- Other forces: applying to other police forces at the same time is allowed.
If you miss this one, use the time well: get your qualifications evidence in order, start PCA-style fitness training and practise deductive reasoning, so you are ready when the next campaign opens.
Questions worth asking the recruitment team
Several dates in this campaign are still "to be confirmed". If one affects your plans, ask using the contact details in your campaign emails and quote your UID. Suggested questions:
- "When will the IST window open and close? How much notice will I get?"
- "When will the Evidence Uploader open and what is the exact closing date?"
- "I have a holiday booked in spring 2027. How do I tell you about dates I cannot attend an Assessment Centre?"
- "I have asked for a reasonable adjustment. When will I hear the outcome?"
Write down each answer, who gave it and the date.
What we could not verify
The PSNI does not publish the following, so this page does not give dates or figures for them.
- The exact IST dates, Evidence Uploader date, Assessment Centre dates and merit list date for Campaign 2610. All are "to be confirmed".
- How long the whole process takes from application to starting training. Only the 6 to 9 months for the Deloitte stages is published.
- How long vetting takes.
- 2027 training intake dates or intake sizes.
- How merit order is calculated.
- The numbers on the PSNI's recruitment statistics page (appointed, progressing, withdrawn and remaining candidates), which load by script and were not captured.
- When the next campaign after this one will open.
- Assessment Centre venue names.

The PSNI reserves the right to progress top performers from early assessment centres through interim merit lists, before the main merit list is passed to the PSNI. It does not publish how merit order is calculated.
Can I apply to the PSNI more than once in the same campaign?
No. Only one application per person per campaign is allowed and the PSNI says duplicates may result in disqualification. You can apply to other police forces at the same time.
When will the next PSNI recruitment campaign open?
The PSNI does not publish future campaign dates. Recent student officer campaigns opened in January 2026 and October 2026. Check joinpsni.co.uk for announcements.
How many people apply to the PSNI?
The January 2026 campaign received 4,104 applications and the 2025 campaign 4,822, according to the PSNI. Earlier campaigns recorded by the PRRB ranged from 5,311 in 2021 to 7,695 in 2017. Figures for the October 2026 campaign will not be known until after it closes.
