PSNI Qualifications
and Eligibility Checker
Check your GCSEs, Irish Leaving Certificate, Scottish or RQF qualifications, overseas results or degree against the education rule the PSNI publishes, then check the Campaign 2610 age rule and your right to work. You get a result for each rule and a list of the evidence to have ready. Free, no account and nothing stored.
Independent information, not advice · Sources checked 23 October 2026 · Northern Ireland unless stated
The PSNI asks for 5 GCSEs at A* to C (or 9 to 4) including English Language, with no Maths requirement. Accepted equivalents are RQF credits (12 at Level 2 or 6 at Level 3 per GCSE), 5 Leaving Certificate subjects including English, SCQF Level 5, overseas results with a UK ENIC Statement of Comparability or a UK or Irish degree. Results must be achieved by the Evidence Uploader closing date. Your 17th birthday must fall on or before 30 November 2026.
Check your qualifications, age and right to work
Five short steps. Answer from your certificates if you have them to hand. If you are unsure, pick "Not sure" and the result will tell you what to check. Nothing you enter leaves your browser.
What is your date of birth?
Used only to check the Campaign 2610 age rule against 30 November 2026. It stays in your browser.
Apply from 17; you must be 18 on appointment. Your 58th birthday must fall after 30 November 2026.
Free, no account. Your answers stay in your browser and are not stored or sent.
How the checker works
Each step maps to a rule the PSNI publishes on joinpsni.co.uk or in its 2026 Guidance for Applicants for Campaign 2610. The checker gives each rule one of three results:
- Meets: your answer matches the published rule.
- Check with the PSNI: the published rule leaves the answer open or you said you were unsure. Sort it out before the Evidence Uploader.
- Does not meet yet: the PSNI states a firm rule your answer does not meet. Some of these can change before the uploader closes (a resit, a result still to come); others, such as the age rule, cannot.
It never tells you that you are eligible. Deloitte reviews your evidence at the Evidence Uploader as part of the Deloitte Managed Stages and the PSNI runs vetting and the other checks afterwards. The checker is for the questions you can answer today, so you do not spend weeks preparing for the IST only to fall at the uploader.
The PSNI publishes how each type of qualification counts. It does not publish whether different types can be added together to reach five, which RQF or overseas English qualifications show English Language, or how leftover RQF credits are treated. In those cases the checker shows "Check with the PSNI" rather than a pass.
The education rule explained
The PSNI's rule is short: "A minimum of 5 GCSEs (or equivalent) at A*-C grade, including English Language." Four details sit behind it.
- Numbered grades count. Grades 9 to 4 count as A* to C. A grade 3 does not.
- No Maths requirement. Maths can be one of your five but you do not need it.
- English Language is the named subject. The English "Talking and Listening" element on its own does not count.
- Equivalents are accepted. RQF credits, the Irish Leaving Certificate, Scottish SCQF Level 5, overseas qualifications with a UK ENIC Statement of Comparability and UK or Irish degrees.
Education is one of five basic requirements in the Guidance for Applicants, alongside age, nationality, computer literacy and integrity. Unlike the others it is proved with documents, at one fixed point in the process: the Evidence Uploader that follows the Initial Selection Test (IST).
| Point | What the PSNI publishes |
|---|---|
| Minimum | 5 GCSEs (or equivalent) at A* to C |
| Numbered grades | 9 to 4 count as A* to C |
| Named subject | English Language |
| Maths | Not required |
| When proved | At the Evidence Uploader, after you pass the IST |
| Achieved by | The Evidence Uploader closing date |
| If not met | Only applicants who meet the Education Criteria and have the Right to Work go on to the Assessment Centre |
The English Language rule
English Language, English Literature and the "Talking and Listening" element are different results. The PSNI asks for English Language. Read your certificate rather than relying on memory.
| Your English result | Checker result | Why |
|---|---|---|
| GCSE English Language at C or 4 or above | Meets | The named subject at an accepted grade |
| GCSE English Language at D or 3 or below | Does not meet yet | Below the A* to C (9 to 4) band |
| GCSE English Literature, no English Language | Does not meet yet | The rule names English Language, a different subject |
| A "Talking and Listening" result only | Does not meet yet | The PSNI says this element on its own does not count |
| Leaving Certificate English at an accepted level | Meets | Part of the 5-subject Leaving Certificate route |
| English at SCQF Level 5 | Meets | Part of the accepted Scottish route |
| An RQF or overseas English qualification | Check with the PSNI | The PSNI does not publish which ones count for English Language |
| A UK or Irish degree | Meets | The degree is full proof of the education requirement |
The PSNI's Evidence Uploader key matters page singles out the wrong English evidence. If your certificate lists English Literature and English Language on separate lines, make sure the English Language line is the one you point to.
Irish Leaving Certificate, Scottish and overseas qualifications
Alongside GCSEs, the PSNI publishes specific rules for the Irish Leaving Certificate and for Scottish qualifications, plus one route for everything gained overseas.
| Qualification | What counts | What does not count |
|---|---|---|
| Irish Leaving Certificate | 5 subjects including English. Higher level grades 1 to 6 (or A to D). Ordinary level grades 1 to 4 (or A to C). | Foundation level. The Junior Certificate. |
| Scottish qualifications | SCQF Level 5. For Standard Grades, grades 1 to 3. | Lower SCQF levels |
| Overseas qualifications | Accepted with a UK ENIC Statement of Comparability | Overseas certificates without the statement |
Two practical points. If you sat a mix of Higher and Ordinary level papers, count every subject that reaches the band for its level. For overseas results, the UK ENIC statement is the evidence. Allow time to get it before the uploader, because we cannot predict what it will compare your qualifications to, which is why the checker shows overseas results as "Check with the PSNI".
RQF credits: the arithmetic, worked
For vocational and other qualifications on the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF), the PSNI counts credits: 12 credits at Level 2 or 6 credits at Level 3 equal one GCSE. The checker's calculator divides your credits by those numbers and ignores leftovers, because the PSNI does not say how leftover credits are treated.
| Credits (invented examples) | Our arithmetic | GCSE equivalents | Left over |
|---|---|---|---|
| 12 at Level 2 | 12 divided by 12 | 1 | 0 |
| 30 at Level 2 | 30 divided by 12 | 2 | 6 credits |
| 60 at Level 2 | 60 divided by 12 | 5 | 0 |
| 18 at Level 3 | 18 divided by 6 | 3 | 0 |
| 30 at Level 3 | 30 divided by 6 | 5 | 0 |
| 40 at Level 3 | 40 divided by 6 | 6 | 4 credits |
Level 3 credits go further: 6 make a GCSE equivalent instead of 12. If you hold credits at both levels, the checker works each level out separately and then treats the total as a mix, which it marks "Check with the PSNI". The same applies to RQF credits plus GCSEs.
Five RQF equivalents meet the count, but the PSNI does not publish which RQF English qualifications show English Language. If you rely on RQF credits, ask the PSNI about English before the uploader, or check whether a GCSE English Language result achieved in time is an option for you.
Degrees: full proof, no advantage
A UK or Irish undergraduate or Masters degree in any subject is accepted as full proof of the education requirement. That is useful if you cannot find your GCSE certificates or your school results are on an older scale. The PSNI is equally clear that a degree is not a prerequisite and gives no advantage in selection.
A degree from outside the UK and Ireland is not covered by that sentence. Treat it as an overseas qualification and get a UK ENIC Statement of Comparability. A degree also matters later: student officers with an honours degree take a Graduate Certificate rather than the BSc during the Probationary Officer Development Programme. It changes nothing at the Evidence Uploader beyond proving education.
Common qualification mixes and what the checker says
Every row below was run through the checker's own rules when this page was built. The examples are invented, but each one is a pattern applicants ask about.
| What you hold (invented examples) | 5 GCSEs or equivalent | English Language | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5 GCSEs at C or 4 and above, including English Language | Meets | Meets | The standard route. No Maths needed. |
| 7 GCSEs at A* to C, English Literature but no English Language | Meets | Does not meet yet | Enough passes, but the rule names English Language |
| 6 GCSEs, English Language at grade 3 | Meets | Does not meet yet | A grade 3 is below the 9 to 4 band, so English Language is not met |
| 6 GCSEs, English only as a Talking and Listening result | Meets | Does not meet yet | The PSNI says Talking and Listening alone does not count |
| 4 GCSEs including English Language | Does not meet yet | Meets | One short of five |
| 3 GCSEs including English Language plus 24 RQF Level 2 credits | Check with the PSNI | Meets | 3 plus 2 equivalents is 5 (our arithmetic), but the PSNI does not publish whether types can be combined |
| 60 RQF Level 2 credits, no GCSEs | Meets | Check with the PSNI | 60 divided by 12 is 5 equivalents (our arithmetic); the PSNI does not say which RQF English qualifications count |
| 30 RQF Level 3 credits, no GCSEs | Meets | Check with the PSNI | 30 divided by 6 is 5 equivalents (our arithmetic); English as above |
| Leaving Certificate: 5 Ordinary level subjects at grade 1 to 4, including English | Meets | Meets | Meets the published Leaving Certificate rule |
| Leaving Certificate: 4 accepted subjects plus Foundation level English | Does not meet yet | Does not meet yet | Foundation level is not accepted, so English and the fifth subject are missing |
| 5 Scottish subjects at SCQF Level 5, including English | Meets | Meets | SCQF Level 5 is the accepted Scottish level |
| An overseas school leaving certificate only | Check with the PSNI | Check with the PSNI | Depends on the UK ENIC Statement of Comparability |
| A UK honours degree, GCSE certificates lost | Meets | Meets | A UK or Irish degree is accepted as full proof |
The "3 GCSEs plus 24 RQF Level 2 credits" row is the one to note. On our arithmetic it adds up to five, but the PSNI does not say mixing is allowed. If that describes you, email the Police Officer Recruitment Team before the uploader rather than finding out at it.
The Evidence Uploader
The Evidence Uploader is part of stage 2 of the PSNI process, which the PSNI calls "Online IST / Evidence Uploader". You do not upload certificates with your application. Only candidates who pass the IST are asked to upload evidence of their 5 GCSEs (or equivalent) and their Right to Work.
| Point | What the PSNI says |
|---|---|
| Who uploads | Only candidates who pass the Initial Selection Test |
| What | Education evidence and Right to Work evidence |
| When for Campaign 2610 | Late January 2027, exact date to be confirmed |
| Deadline time | 12 noon |
| Achieved by | Qualifications must be achieved by the uploader closing date |
| Right to Work format | A Share Code where you need to prove your status. Biometric Residence Permits are not accepted. |
| Who reviews it | Deloitte, as part of the Deloitte Managed Stages |
| What happens next | Only applicants who meet the Education Criteria and have the Right to Work progress to the Assessment Centre |
The PSNI says IST results are likely January 2027. The uploader follows in late January, so there may be little time between hearing you passed and the noon deadline. That is the reason to gather everything now.
Where evidence goes wrong
The PSNI's Evidence Uploader key matters page names two failure points: uploading too much evidence and uploading the wrong English evidence. Our reading of what that means in practice:
- Upload what proves the rule, not everything you own. Five qualifying results including English Language, or a degree that counts as full proof. A pile of extra certificates makes the check harder.
- Point to English Language. Not English Literature. Not a "Talking and Listening" result on its own.
- Show the grade. The evidence has to show A* to C or 9 to 4, or the Leaving Certificate or Scottish level that counts.
- Bring the comparability statement. Overseas results need the UK ENIC Statement of Comparability.
- Use a Share Code for status. A Biometric Residence Permit is not accepted.
- Do not leave it to the morning. The deadline is 12 noon, not midnight.
- Follow your candidate email. The PSNI and Deloitte set the file format and layout; their instructions win over anything here.
Find your certificates (or ask the exam board for replacements), start a UK ENIC application if you need one and check how to get a Share Code if you need one. Then put the evidence in one folder and forget about it until you pass the IST.
Results still to come
You can apply before you hold all five passes. What matters is that your qualifications are achieved by the Evidence Uploader closing date, expected in late January 2027 (exact date to be confirmed, 12 noon deadline). A result issued after that date does not help in this campaign.
- Resitting English Language? Check when the result is issued. If it lands after the uploader closes, it will not count for Campaign 2610.
- Studying for RQF credits? Check when your credits are certificated, not just when the course ends.
- Waiting for a degree? Your GCSEs may already meet the rule. The degree only helps if it is awarded in time.
The PSNI recruits in campaigns rather than all year. If your results will arrive too late, the honest plan may be to apply to a later campaign. The PSNI says there is no restriction on reapplying.
The age rule, worked
For Campaign 2610 the PSNI says your 17th birthday must be on or before 30 November 2026 and your 58th birthday must be after that date. In plain terms you can apply from 17 up to 57 at the closing date. You must be 18 on appointment, which is why the checker tells you when you turn 18.
| Date of birth (invented) | Result | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 30 November 2009 | Meets | Your 17th birthday is on or before 30 November 2026 and your 58th birthday falls after it. You turn 18 on 30 November 2027. You can apply at 17 but you must be 18 on appointment. |
| 1 December 2009 | Does not meet yet | Your 17th birthday is 1 December 2026, after 30 November 2026. For this campaign it must be on or before that date. You could aim for a later campaign: the PSNI recruits in fixed windows. |
| 15 June 2009 | Meets | Your 17th birthday is on or before 30 November 2026 and your 58th birthday falls after it. You turn 18 on 15 June 2027. You can apply at 17 but you must be 18 on appointment. |
| 10 April 1990 | Meets | Your 17th birthday is on or before 30 November 2026 and your 58th birthday falls after it. You must also be 18 on appointment: you turn 18 on or before the closing date. |
| 1 December 1968 | Meets | Your 17th birthday is on or before 30 November 2026 and your 58th birthday falls after it. You must also be 18 on appointment: you turn 18 on or before the closing date. |
| 30 November 1968 | Does not meet yet | Your 58th birthday is 30 November 2026. For this campaign it must fall after 30 November 2026, so you are over the upper age limit for Campaign 2610. |
The two edge cases are the ones people get wrong. A 17th birthday on the closing date itself is fine ("on or before"). A 58th birthday on the closing date is not ("after").
Right to work
The PSNI says applicants must be eligible to work permanently in the UK. Being allowed to work today is not enough if your leave has an end date.
| Your status | Checker result | What the PSNI says | Evidence |
|---|---|---|---|
| UK national | Meets | Qualifies automatically | Right to Work evidence as the uploader asks |
| Irish national | Meets | Qualifies automatically | Right to Work evidence as the uploader asks |
| Indefinite leave to remain (or no time limit on your stay) | Meets | Eligible to work permanently in the UK | A Share Code. Biometric Residence Permits are not accepted. |
| EU, EEA or Swiss national with indefinite leave to remain | Meets | EU, EEA and Swiss nationals must show indefinite leave to remain | A Share Code |
| Pre-settled status | Does not meet yet | Not eligible | None for this campaign |
| Time-limited visa or leave | Does not meet yet | Not eligible, even if you can work now | None for this campaign |
| Naturalisation applied for, not yet granted | Does not meet yet | Not eligible while pending | None for this campaign |
| Not sure | Check with the PSNI | Find out which status you hold before you apply | Depends on your status |
There is no residency requirement: you do not have to live in Northern Ireland to apply. Right to work is a separate question from where you live. See the full eligibility guide for the rest of the requirements.
The optional quick checks
The last step is optional. It covers the published rules people most often ask about before they apply. The outcomes come straight from the PSNI's Can I Join? page, its FAQs and the Guidance for Applicants.
| Quick check | Checker result | What the PSNI says |
|---|---|---|
| Custodial sentence, suspended sentence or Young Offenders Centre | Does not meet yet | Automatic bar: you will not be considered |
| Death or GBH by dangerous or reckless driving | Does not meet yet | Automatic bar |
| More than one driving disqualification | Does not meet yet | Automatic bar |
| Registered Sex Offender, now or in the past | Does not meet yet | Automatic bar |
| Another conviction, caution or police contact | Check with the PSNI | Declare everything, including spent convictions. Some adult convictions bar; some driving offences need 5 or 10 years; cautions are not normally considered until three years after the most recent one. |
| No driving licence | Meets | Not required to apply. Recommended, as you will not ordinarily be posted to your home district. |
| Not living in Northern Ireland | Meets | No residency requirement |
| Lived outside the UK or Ireland in the last 3 years | Check with the PSNI | No minimum years-in-UK rule, but vetting needs a checkable three-year history and you may need overseas criminal record certificates |
| Tattoos on the head, face, neck or hands, or not covered by uniform | Check with the PSNI | Not an automatic bar. Careful consideration; photos and descriptions required. |
These are not the whole picture. Vetting covers you, your wider family circle and your associates, plus finances and social media. The PSNI vetting guide explains it.
What we could not verify
The PSNI's published pages do not state the following, so the checker shows them as "Check with the PSNI" or leaves them out. Ask the Police Officer Recruitment Team or check your candidate emails.
- Whether different qualification types (for example GCSEs plus RQF credits) can be added together to reach five.
- Which RQF, vocational or overseas English qualifications count as English Language.
- How leftover RQF credits that do not make a whole GCSE equivalent are treated.
- The exact Evidence Uploader date for Campaign 2610 (published as late January 2027, to be confirmed).
- The file formats and layout the uploader accepts. These come in your candidate email.
- Any minimum period of UK residence. None is published, so the checker does not apply one.
Frequently Asked Questions
What qualifications do I need to join the PSNI?
A minimum of 5 GCSEs (or equivalent) at A* to C, including English Language. Grades 9 to 4 count as A* to C and there is no Maths requirement. Accepted equivalents include RQF credits, the Irish Leaving Certificate, Scottish SCQF Level 5, overseas qualifications with a UK ENIC Statement of Comparability and a UK or Irish degree.
Does a grade 4 GCSE count for the PSNI?
Yes. The PSNI counts grades 9 to 4 as equal to A* to C. A grade 3 or below does not count towards the five or for English Language.
Does GCSE English Literature count for the PSNI?
The PSNI rule names English Language, so English Literature does not show it. The PSNI also says the English "Talking and Listening" element on its own does not count. Make sure your certificate shows English Language at grade C or 4 or above.
Do I need GCSE Maths for the PSNI?
No. The PSNI publishes no Maths requirement. Maths can still be one of your five passes if you have it.
How do RQF credits convert to GCSEs for the PSNI?
The PSNI counts 12 credits at RQF Level 2 or 6 credits at RQF Level 3 as one GCSE equivalent. So 60 Level 2 credits or 30 Level 3 credits make five equivalents on our arithmetic. The checker's calculator does the sum for you.
Can I mix GCSEs and RQF credits to make five?
The PSNI publishes how each type counts but not whether different types can be added together. The checker shows a mix that reaches five as "Check with the PSNI" rather than a pass. Ask the Police Officer Recruitment Team before relying on one.
Does the Irish Leaving Certificate count for the PSNI?
Yes. You need 5 subjects including English, at Higher level grades 1 to 6 (A to D) or Ordinary level grades 1 to 4 (A to C). Foundation level and the Junior Certificate are not accepted.
Do Scottish qualifications count for the PSNI?
Yes, at SCQF Level 5. For Standard Grades that means grades 1 to 3. The checker treats five Level 5 subjects including English as meeting the rule.
Do I need a degree to join the PSNI?
No. The PSNI says a degree is not a prerequisite and gives no advantage. A UK or Irish undergraduate or Masters degree in any subject is accepted as full proof of the education requirement, which helps if you cannot find your GCSE certificates.
When do I upload my GCSE certificates to the PSNI?
At the Evidence Uploader, which only candidates who pass the IST are asked to complete. For Campaign 2610 it is expected in late January 2027 (exact date to be confirmed, 12 noon deadline). Your qualifications must be achieved by the uploader closing date.
Can I apply while I am still waiting for exam results?
You can apply, but the results you rely on must be achieved by the Evidence Uploader closing date, expected in late January 2027 with a 12 noon deadline. Check when your results will be issued before you count on them.
Can I join the PSNI with pre-settled status?
No. The PSNI says applicants must be eligible to work permanently in the UK. Pre-settled status, time-limited leave and pending naturalisation are not eligible. EU, EEA and Swiss nationals must show indefinite leave to remain.
Is a Biometric Residence Permit accepted as right to work evidence?
No. The PSNI says Biometric Residence Permits are not accepted. Applicants who need to prove their status use a Share Code instead.
