PSNI Call Handler
and Staff Jobs

What police staff recruitment the PSNI has open, where the Call Handler jobs are, the separate staff Initial Selection Test, the staff pension and how a staff role compares with the Student Officer route. Written only from what the PSNI publishes and what we could verify, with the gaps marked clearly.

Short answer: is the PSNI recruiting call handlers?

Yes. On 23 October 2026 the PSNI's Police Staff page showed Call Handler applications open for full-time roles in Greater Belfast, Armagh and Maydown, closing at 3pm on Monday 9 November 2026. Administrative Support Officer recruitment opens on 9 November 2026. Custody Detention Officers were last recruited in January to February 2026. Police staff sit a separate IST from student officers and are in the NI Civil Service pension scheme. For pay and selection stages, check the advert on joinpsni.co.uk.

PSNI police staff jobs in short

The PSNI recruits police staff separately from police officers, through the Police Staff section of joinpsni.co.uk. This is what was open or announced when we checked on 23 October 2026:

What this page does not cover

Staff pay rates, the content of the staff IST and the call handler selection stages are not in the facts we verified for this page. Rather than guess, we say "check the advert on joinpsni.co.uk" wherever those come up. Police officer pay, tests and training do not apply to staff roles.

If you are deciding between a staff role and becoming a police officer, the comparison table sets out what is published for each.

PSNI Call Handler

The Call Handler campaign is the one police staff role the PSNI had open on 23 October 2026. What the PSNI's Police Staff page publishes:

The closing time

Like the Student Officer campaign, the Call Handler campaign closes at 3pm, not midnight. If you are applying, our suggestion is to aim to submit a day or two before 3pm on Monday 9 November 2026 so a technical problem does not cost you the campaign.

Selection stages

We have not verified the current Call Handler selection stages for this page. The advert and any candidate briefing on joinpsni.co.uk are the authority. Our general guide on how to become a 999 call handler records what a PSNI call handler selection briefing said when that page was checked on 18 October 2026. Those notes come from a separate check, not the facts verified for this page on 23 October 2026, so confirm them against the current advert before relying on them.

Typing is part of most call handler selection processes across UK forces. If you want to practise, our free call handler typing test measures speed and accuracy. It is general practice, not PSNI or Deloitte material.

Administrative Support Officer

The PSNI's Police Staff page says Administrative Support Officer recruitment opens on 9 November 2026, the same day the Call Handler campaign closes.

That is all we could verify. The closing date, locations, hours, pay, eligibility and selection stages will be in the advert when it opens. If you are interested, check the Police Staff section of joinpsni.co.uk on or after 9 November 2026.

If you are applying to be an officer too

Administrative Support Officer recruitment opens during the Student Officer campaign, which closes at 3pm on Monday 30 November 2026. The PSNI does not publish, in the facts we hold, whether you can apply for a staff role and the Student Officer campaign at the same time. If you want to do both, ask the recruitment team.

Custody Detention Officer

The PSNI's most recent Custody Detention Officer campaign ran alongside the January 2026 Student Officer campaign. The PSNI announced both on 14 January 2026. The Custody Detention Officer campaign closed on 9 February 2026.

We found no open Custody Detention Officer campaign on 23 October 2026. The PSNI does not publish, in the facts we hold, when it will next recruit for the role. Watch the Police Staff section of joinpsni.co.uk.

For what the role involves in general, see our custody detention officer guide and detention officer recruitment guide. Both are written mainly for forces in England and Wales, so pay and process details there do not describe the PSNI.

The police staff Initial Selection Test

The PSNI's IST briefing for student officers says police staff recruitment has its own separate IST. That one line matters, because much of what you will read about the PSNI IST describes the student officer version.

Do not assume that practice for the student officer IST, including ours, prepares you for the staff test. Our PSNI Initial Selection Test guide and deductive reasoning practice are built for the student officer IST only.

Staff pay and pension

Pay

PSNI police staff pay rates are not in the facts we verified for this page. Check the salary in each advert on joinpsni.co.uk.

Do not use police officer figures for staff roles. The officer starting pay of £31,163 and the Northern Ireland Transitional Allowance of £4,283 are police officer pay. The PRRB describes NITA as an allowance received by all police officers. The PSNI's officer pay is set through the Police Remuneration Review Body and the Department of Justice; nothing in our facts says staff pay is set the same way.

Pension

Police staff are in the Northern Ireland Civil Service pension scheme, not the police scheme. The 2015 police scheme, administered by the Northern Ireland Policing Board, is for officers.

For the officer scheme in detail, see our PSNI pension guide. For staff, ask the recruitment team or check the terms in your offer.

How many police staff the PSNI employs

The PSNI's workforce composition statistics give these figures at 1 August 2026:

PSNI workforce (PSNI workforce composition statistics, correct as of 1 August 2026)
GroupNumber at 1 August 2026
Police staff2,490
Police officers6,432

On those figures (our arithmetic), police staff were about 28% of the 8,922 officers and staff combined. The statistics we hold give a community background and gender breakdown for officers, not for staff, so we do not quote one for staff.

Police staff vs the Student Officer route

If you are weighing a staff role against becoming an officer, this is what is published for each. Where a cell says "not in our verified facts", the answer is in the advert, not missing from the job.

The officer starting package, for reference

Student officers appointed after 1 September 2025 start on pay point 1, £31,163, plus NITA of £4,283: £31,163 + £4,283 = £35,446 (our arithmetic). That is the 2025/26 scale; no 2026/27 PSNI award had been published on 23 October 2026. See PSNI pay scales for every point.

Things to weigh

  • Timing. The Call Handler campaign closes three weeks before the Student Officer campaign. The officer route then runs through the IST in December, the Evidence Uploader in late January 2027 and Assessment Centres in spring to summer 2027.
  • Location. Call Handler roles are advertised in Greater Belfast, Armagh and Maydown. Student officers are not ordinarily posted to their home district after training and may be required to work anywhere in Northern Ireland.
  • Firearms. Every PSNI officer is trained to carry a firearm on duty, with refresher training every six months for operational officers.
  • Shifts. Officers in Local Policing Teams work early, late and night shifts on a five-week pattern. Staff shift patterns are not in our verified facts.
  • No staff shortcut is published. In the facts we hold, the PSNI publishes no faster route from a staff role to the officer route. Staff who want to become officers would apply through a Student Officer campaign like anyone else, on our reading.

Both deadlines side by side

Two PSNI campaigns close within three weeks of each other this autumn. If you are considering both, keep the dates straight.

Other ways in: work experience, transfers, reserve, specials and PCSOs

  • Work experience. The PSNI's FAQs say to contact policerecruitment@psni.police.uk.
  • Transferee Scheme. Reopened on 12 October 2026 for serving constables, including detective constables, from other forces. It is run by the PSNI, not Deloitte. See our Transferee Scheme guide.
  • Part-Time Reserve. It still exists but is small: a full-time equivalent of 88 men and 69 women at 31 March 2025. We found no current Part-Time Reserve recruitment campaign on joinpsni.co.uk.
  • Special constables and PCSOs. No special constable or PCSO route appears anywhere on joinpsni.co.uk. If you have read about either role, it is likely to describe forces in England and Wales.

How to prepare for a PSNI staff application

Because the staff selection process is not in our verified facts, this is general preparation (our suggestions), not a description of the PSNI's stages.

  1. Read the full advert and any candidate briefing on joinpsni.co.uk before you start. They set out the eligibility, pay and stages for that role.
  2. Note the closing time. The Call Handler campaign closes at 3pm on 9 November 2026.
  3. Check the location works for you. Greater Belfast, Armagh or Maydown for the current Call Handler roles.
  4. Expect a separate staff IST. Read the instructions you are sent rather than relying on student officer material.
  5. Practise typing if you are applying for a call handler role. Our free typing test is general practice.
  6. Be discreet. The PSNI advises officer applicants to tell only people they trust about their application and to take care on social media, because of the higher personal risk in Northern Ireland. It is sensible advice for staff applicants too, on our reading.

For general interview preparation across UK forces, see our 999 call handler interview questions and police staff interview questions. Both are written mainly for England and Wales.

Common mistakes with PSNI staff applications

  1. Preparing for the wrong test. The staff IST is separate from the student officer IST. Material about deductive reasoning and the Global Skills Assessment describes the officer test.
  2. Quoting officer pay for a staff job. Pay point 1 and NITA are police officer pay. Staff pay is in each advert.
  3. Assuming the officer pension. Staff are in the Northern Ireland Civil Service scheme, not the Police Pension Scheme (NI) 2015.
  4. Missing the 3pm close. The Call Handler campaign closes at 3pm on 9 November 2026, not at midnight.
  5. Relying on England and Wales guides for PSNI detail. Pay, tests and stages in general guides describe other forces. Use them for background only.
  6. Looking for a PCSO or special constable route. Neither appears on joinpsni.co.uk.

What we could not verify

These points are not in the facts we verified on 23 October 2026. Check the advert on joinpsni.co.uk or ask the recruitment team.

  • Pay rates for Call Handlers, Administrative Support Officers, Custody Detention Officers or any other staff role.
  • The content, timing and attempt rules of the police staff IST.
  • The Call Handler selection stages after the online test, including any typing standard.
  • Eligibility rules for staff roles (age, qualifications, right to work).
  • Vetting, medical and substance testing for staff roles.
  • Training and shift patterns for staff roles.
  • The closing date and locations for Administrative Support Officer recruitment.
  • When the PSNI will next recruit Custody Detention Officers.
  • Whether you can apply for a staff role and the Student Officer campaign at the same time.
  • Staff pension contribution rates under the Northern Ireland Civil Service scheme.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the PSNI recruiting call handlers?

Yes. On 23 October 2026 the PSNI's Police Staff recruitment page showed Call Handler applications open, for full-time roles in Greater Belfast, Armagh and Maydown. Applications close at 3pm on Monday 9 November 2026.

When does the PSNI call handler application close?

At 3pm on Monday 9 November 2026. That is three weeks before the Student Officer campaign closes at 3pm on Monday 30 November 2026. Check joinpsni.co.uk in case the date changes.

Where are PSNI call handler jobs based?

The current Call Handler recruitment lists Greater Belfast, Armagh and Maydown. The roles are full time.

How much does a PSNI call handler earn?

Staff pay rates are not in the facts we verified for this page, so we do not quote a figure. Check the salary in the Call Handler advert on joinpsni.co.uk. Police officer pay figures do not apply to police staff.

Is there a test for PSNI police staff jobs?

Yes. The PSNI says police staff recruitment has its own separate Initial Selection Test. Its content is not in our verified facts, so read the briefing that comes with the advert or your invitation.

Is the police staff IST the same as the student officer IST?

No. The PSNI's IST briefing says police staff recruitment has its own separate IST. The student officer IST is SHL deductive reasoning plus the Global Skills Assessment; do not assume the staff test is the same.

When is the PSNI recruiting custody detention officers?

The PSNI recruited Custody Detention Officers in January and February 2026, closing on 9 February 2026. We found no open Custody Detention Officer campaign when we checked on 23 October 2026. Watch the Police Staff section of joinpsni.co.uk.

When does PSNI Administrative Support Officer recruitment open?

The PSNI's Police Staff page says Administrative Support Officer recruitment opens on 9 November 2026. Check joinpsni.co.uk on that date for the advert and closing date.

What pension do PSNI police staff get?

Police staff are in the Northern Ireland Civil Service pension scheme, not the police pension scheme. Police officers who join for the first time are enrolled in the Police Pension Scheme (NI) 2015.

Does the PSNI recruit PCSOs or special constables?

No PCSO or special constable route appears on joinpsni.co.uk. The routes advertised are the Student Officer campaign, the Transferee Scheme for serving constables and police staff roles.

How many police staff does the PSNI employ?

The PSNI's workforce statistics show 2,490 police staff at 1 August 2026, alongside 6,432 police officers.
