Police Scotland
Application Timeline 2027
Police Scotland's current Police Officer vacancy closes on 31 March 2027 at 23:55. This is a month-by-month plan to be ready to apply before then: fitness, the PSET, your written answers and the paperwork. It plans your preparation, not Police Scotland's dates, which it does not publish.
Independent information, not advice · Sources checked 22 October 2026 · Scotland unless stated
Before 31 March 2027 at 23:55, when the Police Officer vacancy (ID 613) closes and only once you are ready to pass the PSET and a 5.4 bleep test, because failing ends the application. From November 2026 that gives about 21 weeks to build fitness, practise full 49-question PSET papers, draft your 800-word statement and 400-word values answer and gather five years of employment details. Stage and intake dates after you apply are not published.
The key dates
Police Scotland's candidate portal listed the Police Officer vacancy (ID 613) as open on 22 October 2026, with a closing date of 31 March 2027 at 23:55. That is 160 days from the day we checked. Everything else on this page works back from that date.
| Date | What it is | Source |
|---|---|---|
| 22 October 2026 | The date we checked the portal. The Police Officer vacancy was open. | Candidate portal vacancies |
| 28 October 2026 | Closing date of the one Transferee Sergeant post (Orkney) listed on the transferee page. Not relevant to new officers. | Police Scotland transferee page |
| 31 March 2027, 23:55 | Police Officer vacancy (ID 613) closes. Rejoiner constable (ID 5115) and Special Constable (ID 4896) also close on 31 March 2027. | Candidate portal vacancies |
| Any time after you apply | PSET, fitness test, assessment day, medical, substance test, references and vetting. Dates are set by Police Scotland and not published in advance. | Police Scotland selection process |
| Within 6 months of being given a start date | Your fitness pass must fall in this window, or you retest before a formal offer. | Police Scotland recruitment process page |
| Your start date | One of ten intakes a year. 2026/27 intake dates are not published. | Scottish Police Authority, June 2024 |
23:55 on Wednesday 31 March 2027 is the deadline, but the form is long. It has an eligibility assessment, then a main form with an 800-word statement, a 400-word values answer and five years of employment. Treat mid March as your own deadline so a slow evening, a missing referee contact or a wrong answer you need to correct does not cost you the vacancy.
What Police Scotland does not publish
Before planning, be clear about the limits. Police Scotland publishes the closing date and the order of the stages. It does not publish:
- when the PSET, fitness test or assessment day will be after you apply;
- how long the medical, references or vetting take;
- the intake dates for 2026/27, only that there are ten intakes a year since March 2024;
- how long the whole process takes. It says the process is "different for each person".
So this is a preparation timeline. It tells you what to do each month before you apply so that, when Police Scotland sets your dates, you are ready for them. Our how long recruitment takes guide explains what is fixed after you apply and the timeline planner lets you enter your own dates as they arrive.
The plan at a glance: November 2026 to March 2027
This is our suggested plan, built around the stages Police Scotland publishes. It is not an official Police Scotland plan. It assumes you are starting in late October or early November with no PSET practice and fitness below 5.4. From 1 November 2026 to 31 March 2027 is 150 days, or 21 weeks and 3 days.
| Month | Fitness | PSET | Application | Paperwork and checks |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| November 2026 | Find your current level on a 15m bleep test. Start 3 sessions a week. | Read Police Scotland's mock paper and try it untimed. Note your weakest element. | Read the published application example from start to finish. | Run the eligibility checks: age, residence, status, licence and points, finance dates, eyesight. |
| December 2026 | Add one interval session a week. Practise turns on a marked 15m course. | Short daily practice on your weakest element. One timed mixed set a week. | Draft the personal statement (aim for about 800 words). | List every job for the last 5 years with dates and contacts. Tell referees. |
| January 2027 | Weekly bleep test with the beeps. Aim past 5.4. | Full timed practice papers: 49 questions in 60 minutes. | Draft the 400-word values answer. Redraft the statement. | Gather tattoo photos if you have any. Write your list of anything to declare. |
| February 2027 | Aim for level 6 or 7 so 5.4 feels comfortable. | Two more timed papers. Review every wrong answer. | Final edit of both answers in your own words. Check word counts. | Check business interests to declare. Confirm referee details. |
| March 2027 (by the 31st, 23:55) | Keep training. You may be tested soon after applying. | Keep practice ticking over until your PSET date. | Register, complete the eligibility assessment and submit the main form well before 31 March. | Ask for any reasonable adjustments on the eligibility form. |
Four strands run in parallel because they all have to be ready together. The fitness test and the PSET are the two stages where a fail ends the application, so they get steady weekly time from the start rather than a burst at the end.
November 2026: check, measure, read
Check the hard rules first
There is no point training for months if a rule rules you out. Police Scotland's officer page says you can apply if you are 18 or over, have lived in the UK for at least three years, meet the right to work requirement (if you are not a UK or EEA national, indefinite leave to remain or equivalent at the point of application, because time limited visas do not meet the legal requirement), hold a manual driving licence, meet the DVLA group 2 medical standards and meet the eyesight standard. Its rejection list adds more than 6 points on your licence, drink or drug driving, a list of offences, a current trust deed or one discharged less than 12 months ago, sequestration or bankruptcy with less than 3 years passed and defaulted accounts totalling £1,000 or more.
Our eligibility checker runs through these in about two minutes and the eligibility guide explains each rule.
Work out your dates against 31 March
If a rule rules you out today, find the date it stops applying. A trust deed discharged on 1 March 2026 stops counting against you from 1 March 2027, inside the closing date. Three years' UK residence that starts on 1 May 2024 is reached on 1 May 2027, outside it. Our finance and debt rules guide works through more examples.
Measure your fitness
Mark out exactly 15 metres and run the bleep test with the beeps to find your level now. The standard is level 5.4: running at least in time with the beeps for four lengths at level 5. Our 15m bleep test simulator plays the timings. Then start three sessions a week.
Try the official mock paper
Police Scotland publishes a 15-question mock paper with answers: 4 language questions (true, false or not possible to say), 6 number questions and 5 information handling questions. Try it untimed and note which element felt hardest. That is where your December practice starts.
Read the application form
Police Scotland publishes an example of the whole application. Read it end to end now so you know the personal statement, the values question, the employment section and the declarations before you draft anything. Our application form guide walks through it.
December 2026: build habits and draft the statement
Fitness
Keep three sessions a week and make one of them intervals, such as short faster efforts with easy recovery. Practise the turn: plant a foot on the line and push back, alternating sides. Police Scotland recommends Copstrong, its online strength and conditioning programme.
PSET
Short daily practice on your weakest element and one timed mixed set a week. The PSET is 49 questions in 60 minutes, about 73 seconds a question on average, with a calculator provided. Our element guides cover literacy, numeracy and information handling and the free practice test has original questions in the published format.
The personal statement
Police Scotland asks you to cover why you want to join, the skills and attributes that make you suitable and the development journey that led you to apply and suggests aiming for 800 words. Draft it in a separate document. Use real examples from work, volunteering, education or life. Write it yourself: Police Scotland's AI guidance says applications that appear entirely AI-generated are likely to be identified.
Employment history
List every job for the last 5 years with start and end dates, the employer's address and a contact. If you have no employment history, the form asks for character references instead. Tell your referees now that Police Scotland may contact them later in the process.
January 2027: full papers and the values answer
Fitness
Run the bleep test with the beeps once a week and note your level. If you have trained steadily since November you should be close to or past 5.4. Keep going: you want 5.4 to feel easy on the day, not to just scrape it.
PSET
Switch to full timed papers: 49 questions in 60 minutes, handwritten in ink if you can, because the real paper is handwritten under exam conditions. After each paper, sort your mistakes by element. You must pass all three elements, so a strong score in one does not cover a weak score in another.
The values question
The exact question on the form: "Police Scotland values are Fairness, Integrity, Respect and Human Rights. What are your personal values and how do you practice these values in your own life?" Maximum 400 words. A simple pattern is about 100 words per value: say what it means to you and give one real example of you acting on it. Our values question guide covers this in depth and the values question tool helps you draft inside the limit.
Declarations
Write an honest list of anything you need to declare: convictions, tattoos (with photos of each), business interests and previous applications or service. Police Scotland says each declared conviction is considered on its merits and checked by the vetting unit at the pre-appointment stage.
February 2027: polish and confirm
Fitness
Aim beyond 5.4, towards level 6 or 7, so the real test feels comfortable. Keep a rest day each week. The test may come soon after you apply, so you want to be ready before you submit.
PSET
Two more full timed papers. Review every wrong answer and the reason: misreading the passage, a slip in the arithmetic, reading the wrong row of a table or running out of time. Each needs a different fix.
Final edit of your written answers
Read both answers aloud. Cut general claims you cannot back up with an example. Check the values answer is at or under 400 words and that anything you add in the "any other information" box is at or under 200 words.
Final checks
Confirm referee contact details. Check your licence points total and your finance dates one more time. Decide your three posting preferences: see our 13 divisions guide.
March 2027: apply with margin
Register on the candidate portal and complete the eligibility assessment, then the main form. Ask for any reasonable adjustments on the eligibility form: Police Scotland reviews those before the main form so support is in place for the rest of the process and it names neurodivergent conditions such as dyslexia, dyspraxia, autism and ADHD. Paste in the answers you drafted. Submit well before 23:55 on 31 March.
After you submit, keep training and keep PSET practice ticking over. Police Scotland contacts you through your candidate account at each step and the dates are set by Police Scotland.
Starting later than November
If you find this page later, the plan compresses. These are our suggestions. Week counts are to 31 March 2027.
| If you start preparing in | Weeks to 31 March 2027 | What to cut and what to keep |
|---|---|---|
| Late October 2026 | About 23 | Follow the full month plan. You have time for a proper fitness base and several full PSET papers. |
| December 2026 | About 17 | Merge November into December: eligibility checks and the mock paper in week 1, then follow the plan from December. |
| January 2027 | About 13 | Fitness and PSET in parallel from day one. Draft both written answers in January and edit in February. |
| February 2027 | About 8 | Apply in March only if fitness is already close to 5.4. Use the fitness page's eight-week outline as a minimum. |
| March 2027 | 4 or fewer | Register early in the month if you are eligible, but expect the PSET and fitness test soon after: be honest with yourself about readiness. |
Applying early does not help if you then fail the PSET or the fitness test, because that ends the application and Police Scotland does not publish how soon you can try again. If you apply and then have to reapply, the form asks you, in up to 200 words, what you have done since and how you used feedback.
Checklist before you press submit
| Before you press submit | Why |
|---|---|
| Every eligibility answer is accurate | Police Scotland says what you supply is confirmed at the vetting stage. If you answered a pre-screening question wrongly, it asks you to email the recruitment team. |
| Statement and values answer are in your own words | Police Scotland's AI guidance says applications that appear entirely AI-generated are likely to be identified. |
| The values answer is 400 words or fewer | That is the limit on the published form. |
| Any other information is 200 words or fewer | That is the limit on the published form. |
| Employment covers the last 5 years with contacts | It is used for references at the final stage. |
| Every tattoo is described and photographed | The form asks for a description and photos of every tattoo. |
| Convictions are declared | Each case is considered on its own merits and checked by the vetting unit. |
| Three posting preferences are chosen | Asked on the eligibility assessment. |
| Reasonable adjustments are requested | Requests are reviewed before the main form so support is in place. |
After you apply: the stages that follow
Police Scotland's candidate portal lists these in order. The dates are Police Scotland's to set and are not published in advance.
- PSET: one paper, three elements, 49 questions in 60 minutes, pass all three. See PSET day.
- Fitness: 15m bleep test to 5.4, briefed by a Physical Training Instructor.
- Assessment day: ice breaker, group task and situational judgement exercise in the morning; if successful, a 20-minute, four-question interview in the afternoon. See the group task and SJE guide.
- Medical with Optima Health, including eyesight and BMI.
- Substance misuse test: a hair sample.
- Employer references.
- Full vetting.
- Offer and intake: 18 weeks' training, then 2 years' probation.
Use the waiting time well: our how long it takes guide has a table of what to do while you wait for each stage.
If the vacancy closes before you are ready
You cannot apply to vacancy 613 after 23:55 on 31 March 2027. Police Scotland does not publish whether or when it will open another Police Officer vacancy, so we cannot tell you. Three sensible steps:
- Keep your preparation going so you are ready if a new vacancy opens.
- Check Police Scotland's police officer jobs page and candidate portal and consider an intake alert.
- If you want to start sooner in some form of policing, the special constable route had a vacancy with the same closing date on 22 October 2026. Specials sit the same PSET and 5.4 fitness test.
Week by week: 2 November 2026 to 31 March 2027
The same plan broken into weeks, Monday to Sunday. It is our suggestion, not Police Scotland's. It assumes fitness below 5.4 and no PSET practice at the start. If you are already fit, spend the fitness time on the PSET. If a week slips, move on rather than trying to catch up everything at once.
| Week starting | Fitness (suggestion) | PSET (suggestion) | Writing and paperwork |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2 November 2026 | Bleep test with the beeps: note your level. Three easy sessions. | Police Scotland's mock paper, untimed. | Eligibility checks. Read the application example. |
| 9 November 2026 | Three sessions of 20 to 25 minutes' easy running or run-walk. | Weakest element: 15 minutes a day. | List finance and licence dates. |
| 16 November 2026 | As above, plus one short bodyweight strength session. | Weakest element daily. | Start the employment list. |
| 23 November 2026 | As above. | First timed mixed set (about 15 questions in 18 minutes). | Notes for the personal statement: why, skills, journey. |
| 30 November 2026 | Add one interval session. Start practising turns on 15 metres. | Second element daily. | First draft of the statement. |
| 7 December 2026 | Two easy runs and one interval session. | Timed mixed set. | Contact referees. |
| 14 December 2026 | As above. | Third element daily. | Second draft of the statement. |
| 21 December 2026 | Keep it going over the holidays, even if shorter. | Light practice. | Rest the statement. |
| 28 December 2026 | As above. | Light practice. | Read the statement fresh. |
| 4 January 2027 | Weekly bleep test with the beeps from now on. | First full paper: 49 questions in 60 minutes. | Notes for the values answer: one example per value. |
| 11 January 2027 | Easy runs, intervals and a bleep test. | Review every wrong answer by element. | First draft of the values answer. |
| 18 January 2027 | As above. | Targeted work on the element with most errors. | Tattoo photos and descriptions if needed. |
| 25 January 2027 | As above. Aim past 5.4. | Second full paper. | Declarations list. |
| 1 February 2027 | Aim for level 6. | Review and targeted practice. | Second draft of the values answer. |
| 8 February 2027 | As above. | Third full paper. | Final edit of the statement. |
| 15 February 2027 | Aim for level 6 or 7. | Review and targeted practice. | Final edit of the values answer. Word counts. |
| 22 February 2027 | As above. | Fourth full paper. | Business interests and referee details checked. |
| 1 March 2027 | Keep training. | Mixed timed sets. | Choose three posting preferences. Register on the portal. |
| 8 March 2027 | Keep training. | Mixed timed sets. | Complete the eligibility assessment and main form. |
| 15 March 2027 | Keep training. | Keep practice ticking over. | Submit. Our suggested personal deadline. |
| 22 March 2027 | Keep training. | Keep practice ticking over. | Spare week if anything went wrong. |
| 29 March 2027 | Keep training. | Keep practice ticking over. | Vacancy closes Wednesday 31 March at 23:55. |
The fitness column follows the same steady build as the eight-week outline on our fitness test guide, spread over a longer period. It is general fitness guidance, not medical advice. If you have a health condition, check with a doctor before starting a new programme.
Check your own dates against the closing date
Several of Police Scotland's rules are time based. Each one gives you a date to work out. If that date falls after 31 March 2027, you cannot apply to this vacancy. All examples below are invented and every date was checked with a date calculator.
| Rule | Your date to find | Worked example (invented) |
|---|---|---|
| Age 18 or over | Your 18th birthday | Born 10 March 2009: 18 on 10 March 2027, inside the closing date. |
| At least three years in the UK | The date you began living in the UK | Arrived 1 January 2024: three years on 1 January 2027, inside the closing date. |
| Trust deed: rejected while in one or within 12 months of discharge | Discharge date plus 12 months | Discharged 15 April 2026: clear on 15 April 2027, after the closing date. |
| Sequestration or bankruptcy: rejected if less than 3 years have passed | Ask the recruitment team which date the 3 years run from | Police Scotland's page does not say whether the 3 years run from the award or the discharge. |
| Defaulted accounts totalling £1,000 or more | The total of your defaulted accounts | Two defaults of £600 and £450 total £1,050: over the limit. |
| More than 6 points on your licence | Your current points total | 6 points: not over the limit. 7 points: over it. |
| Laser eye surgery: at least 6 weeks | Surgery date plus 6 weeks | Surgery on 1 March 2027: 6 weeks is 12 April 2027, after the closing date. |
The eyesight annex says PRK, LASIK, LASEK, ICRS and cataract surgery are acceptable after at least 6 weeks. Our eligibility guide and finance rules guide cover the detail.
Working the fitness rule backwards
You will not know your start date when you apply, but you will know the date you passed the fitness test. Police Scotland says the test must have been completed within 6 months of being provided a start date. If more than 6 months has passed, you take another test before any formal offer. Here is the arithmetic for one invented case.
| Step | Worked example (invented dates) |
|---|---|
| 1. Pass the fitness test | Passed on Tuesday 20 April 2027. |
| 2. Add 6 months | Wednesday 20 October 2027. |
| 3. Compare with when you are given a start date | Given a start date on or before 20 October 2027: inside the window. Given it later, for example on 15 November 2027: expect a further fitness test before any formal offer. |
| 4. Plan your training | Keep training through the summer so a retest in autumn is easy, not a scramble. |
Police Scotland can also ask for an additional fitness test at any point in the process, so even inside the window, do not stop training.
Three profiles: adjust the plan to where you start
The month plan above assumes a middle starting point. These are our suggested adjustments for three common starting points. None of them changes the closing date.
| Already fit (past 5.4 now) | Starting from zero fitness | Previous applicant | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Biggest risk | The PSET and the written answers, because fitness feels done | Not reaching 5.4 in time | Repeating the stage you failed |
| November 2026 | PSET mock paper and daily practice on your weakest element. Draft the statement early. | Three run-walk sessions a week. Eligibility checks. Read the form. | Write down exactly where you stopped and any feedback you received. |
| December 2026 | Timed mixed PSET sets. Values answer notes. | Build to three runs of 25 to 30 minutes. Add intervals. | Targeted work on the stage you failed, every week. |
| January 2027 | Full timed papers every week or two. | Weekly bleep test. Expect to be near 5.4 by late January if consistent. | Draft the 200-word previous-applicant answer: what you did and how you used feedback. |
| February 2027 | Keep fitness ticking over (aim for level 7 or more). | Aim past 5.4 to level 6. Start full PSET papers if not already. | Full timed practice on every stage you can, not just the one you failed. |
| March 2027 | Apply early in the month. | Apply only if you are passing 5.4 consistently. | Apply with the previous-applicant answer ready. |
Already fit
Do not let fitness make you complacent about the rest. You still need to pass all three PSET elements and write two strong answers in your own words. Use the fitness time you save on full timed PSET papers.
Starting from zero
Police Scotland says more people fail the fitness test than any other stage. From early November you have about 21 weeks, which is enough for a steady build if you are consistent. If you cannot jog for ten minutes yet, start with run-walk sessions. This is general guidance, not medical advice. Our starting from zero guide goes further.
Previous applicant
The form asks previous applicants: "As you have made a previous application to us, please explain what you have done to prepare for this new application. Please include details of how you have used the feedback provided." Up to 200 words. Your preparation over these months is the evidence for that answer, so keep notes as you go. See reapplying after failing.
Fitting each PSET element into the plan
Police Scotland publishes a 15-question mock paper. Its split by element is shown below. The split of the real 49 questions is not published, so do not assume it mirrors the mock.
| PSET element | What Police Scotland's mock shows | How to fit it into the plan |
|---|---|---|
| Language (literacy) | 4 questions: statements about a passage marked true, false or not possible to say | Short daily sets in November and December. Practise judging only from the passage, not what you already know. |
| Numbers (numeracy) | 6 questions answered as a written figure | Daily sums with a calculator, because one is provided. Practise percentages, rates, time and money in policing settings. |
| Information handling | 5 questions on a table of offences and outcomes | Practise reading rows and columns fast: totals, differences and percentages from a table. |
| Whole paper | 49 questions in 60 minutes; pass all three elements | Full timed papers from January, handwritten in ink if you can. |
Our element guides go deeper: literacy, numeracy and information handling.
A writing schedule for the statement and values answer
The two long answers are the part of the application most people rush. Spread them out. This is our suggested schedule, matched to the weekly plan above.
| Week starting | Writing milestone | Target |
|---|---|---|
| 23 November 2026 | Notes for the statement under three headings: why Police Scotland, skills and attributes, your development journey | Bullet points only |
| 30 November 2026 | First draft of the statement | About 800 words, the figure Police Scotland suggests |
| 14 December 2026 | Second draft: replace general claims with real examples | Every skill backed by one example |
| 4 January 2027 | Notes for the values answer: one real example per value | Fairness, Integrity, Respect, Human Rights |
| 11 January 2027 | First draft of the values answer | About 100 words per value |
| 1 February 2027 | Second draft of the values answer | 400 words or fewer |
| 8 to 15 February 2027 | Final edits of both answers, read aloud | In your own words |
The values question, word for word: "Police Scotland values are Fairness, Integrity, Respect and Human Rights. What are your personal values and how do you practice these values in your own life?" Our values question guide has a structure for 400 words.
Timeline mistakes to avoid
| Timeline mistake | Why it costs you |
|---|---|
| Leaving fitness until after you apply | The fitness test can come soon after the PSET and Police Scotland says it is the stage most people fail. |
| Practising only your strongest PSET element | You must pass all three elements. |
| Writing the statement in one evening | It is about 800 words and is used to assess your motivation, preparation, skills and values. |
| Using AI to write your answers | Police Scotland says applications that appear entirely AI-generated are likely to be identified. |
| Applying on 31 March | Any problem on the last evening costs you the vacancy. |
| Not checking finance dates | A trust deed discharged less than 12 months ago means rejection. |
| Stopping training after the fitness test | A further test is needed if more than 6 months pass before you are given a start date. |
A weekly time budget
How much time the plan needs each week is our estimate, not Police Scotland's. It assumes the starting point of the main plan. Adjust it to your own life: three short sessions you actually do beat six you skip.
| Strand | Suggested time a week | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Fitness | About 2 to 3 hours across three sessions | Add a weekly bleep test from January. |
| PSET practice | About 1.5 to 2 hours, mostly in short daily sets | One full 60-minute paper replaces a week's short sets from January. |
| Writing | About 1 hour in drafting weeks | Nothing in rest weeks. |
| Paperwork | About 30 minutes in the weeks it appears | Employment dates, referees, tattoo photos, declarations. |
Also applying to a force in England or Wales?
Some applicants weigh Police Scotland against a force over the border. The processes are different. England and Wales forces use the College of Policing's national process, including the National Sift. Police Scotland uses none of that: it has the handwritten PSET, an early 5.4 fitness test and an in-person assessment day with a group task, a spoken situational judgement exercise and an interview. Police Scotland also requires you to be 18 to apply.
Preparing for both doubles the test practice, though fitness to 5.4 on a 15-metre test counts for both. See Police Scotland vs England and Wales before you split your time.
What we could not verify
- Dates for the PSET, fitness test or assessment day after you apply.
- Intake dates for 2026/27.
- How long the whole process takes.
- Whether Police Scotland will open a new Police Officer vacancy after 31 March 2027.
- Whether applications are processed in the order they arrive.
- The PSET pass mark, the split of questions by element and resit rules.
- Fitness test retake rules.
Frequently Asked Questions
When does the Police Scotland police officer vacancy close?
The Police Officer vacancy (ID 613) on Police Scotland's candidate portal had a closing date of 31 March 2027 at 23:55 when we checked on 22 October 2026. That is a Wednesday.
Is Police Scotland recruiting in 2027?
Its Police Officer vacancy is open until 31 March 2027 at 23:55, as listed on the candidate portal on 22 October 2026. Police Scotland does not publish whether a new vacancy will open after that date.
What are the Police Scotland intake dates for 2026 and 2027?
They are not published on Police Scotland's recruitment pages. A Scottish Police Authority paper from June 2024 says Police Scotland runs ten intakes of officers a year since March 2024, replacing quarterly intakes.
If I apply in March 2027, when will I start?
Police Scotland does not publish how long the process takes or the 2026/27 intake dates, so nobody can give you an honest date. You will be told your dates through your candidate account as you pass each stage.
Should I apply early or wait until I am ready?
Wait until you are ready, but not past the closing date. Failing the PSET or fitness test ends the application and Police Scotland does not publish resit waiting periods. Use the months before you apply to prepare, then register with enough margin before 31 March 2027.
How long should I spend preparing for the PSET?
Police Scotland does not say. Our month plan gives about 20 weeks of steady practice from November, with full 49-question timed papers from January. Start with Police Scotland's own mock paper to find your weakest element.
When do I sit the fitness test?
After the application and the PSET, before the assessment day. The date is set by Police Scotland. Your pass must be within 6 months of being given a start date or you retest before a formal offer.
Can I save the application and finish it later?
Yes. Police Scotland's adjustments page says the form can be saved and returned to and that you can write answers in another document and paste them in.
What if my trust deed ends close to the closing date?
Police Scotland rejects applicants currently in a trust deed or within 12 months of discharge. If your 12 months end before 31 March 2027, you can apply after that date and before the closing date. If they end after it, you cannot apply to this vacancy.
What if I will not have lived in the UK for three years by 31 March 2027?
Police Scotland's officer page requires at least three years' UK residence. If you will not reach three years before the vacancy closes, you cannot apply to this vacancy. Whether a later vacancy opens is not published.
Does the closing date apply to special constables and rejoiners too?
Yes, on 22 October 2026 both the Special Constable vacancy (ID 4896) and the Rejoiner constable vacancy (ID 5115) also showed a closing date of 31 March 2027.
What happens if the vacancy closes before I apply?
You cannot apply to that vacancy. We cannot say whether or when Police Scotland will open another, because it does not publish that. Keep preparing, check Police Scotland's jobs pages and consider signing up for intake alerts.
How many hours a week does preparing for Police Scotland take?
Police Scotland does not say. Our plan suggests roughly 4 to 6 hours a week across fitness, PSET practice and writing, with more in drafting weeks. Adjust it to your own starting point.
Can I prepare for Police Scotland and an English force at the same time?
Yes, but the processes differ. England and Wales uses the National Sift; Police Scotland uses the handwritten PSET and an in-person assessment day. The 5.4 standard on a 15-metre bleep test is common to both.
What is the latest I should apply?
The vacancy closes at 23:55 on 31 March 2027. Our plan treats 15 March 2027 as a personal deadline so a slow evening or a missing detail does not cost you the vacancy.
