BTP's role page says the assessment centre has a 10-minute presentation followed by an interview. BTP assesses your insight into BTP and your understanding and expectations of the role as well as the CVF. It does not publish the topic, so practise a clear structure on several topics, with and without preparation time, until finishing inside 10 minutes is automatic. BTP's Inner London advert lists an online assessment centre instead, so check your invitation.
What BTP says about the presentation
- Length: 10 minutes, followed by an interview (police officer role page).
- Assessment: "your insight into the BTP, your understanding and expectations of the role" and the College of Policing's Competency and Values Framework (recruitment pack and role page).
- Timing on the day: the interview including the presentation takes one hour at most. If it is successful you move on to Stage Two: the fitness test, uniform measurements and biometrics (recruitment pack).
BTP's Inner London advert lists an "Online Assessment Centre" and a "Final interview" and does not mention a presentation. BTP does not publish which format applies to every 2026/27 campaign. If yours is online, practise on camera with brief notes and no reliance on slides.
Our guide to joining BTP covers every other stage.
A structure that fits 10 minutes
- Opening (1:00): Introduce yourself in one sentence, then put the topic in your own words. Give the panel a reason to listen: a short picture of the situation or a moment from your own life. Finish by naming the three points you will cover, in order.
- Point one (2:30): Make your first point in one clear sentence. Back it with a specific example: something you did, saw or would do, with who was involved and what happened. Say why it matters to passengers, staff or the public. Show a competency or value through what you did rather than just naming it.
- Point two (2:30): Signpost the move ("My second point is..."). Make the point, give one concrete example and explain the practical steps. Mention who you would work with: rail staff, colleagues, other services or the community.
- Point three (2:30): Make your final point. This is a good place for something that looks ahead: how you would know it was working, what you would learn or what you would do differently next time. Keep one eye on the clock and land it cleanly.
- Close (1:30): Sum up your three points in one sentence each. Say what difference they would make to the people using the railway. End with a clear final line, thank the panel and stop inside the ten minutes.
Practise until you finish with about 30 seconds to spare. If you overrun, cut a point rather than speaking faster.
What BTP does not publish
- The topic or whether you get it before the day.
- Whether you can use slides or notes. Prepare to present without slides.
- How the presentation is scored, beyond the published criteria.
- Whether the online assessment centre on the Inner London advert includes a presentation.
Check your assessment centre invitation for each of these.

BTP's police officer role page lists a 10-minute presentation followed by an interview and its recruitment pack describes a competency-based interview including a presentation, one hour at most. BTP's Inner London advert lists an online assessment centre and a final interview instead and does not mention a presentation. One practice topic, the section timer and the preparation timer are free. All 20 topics with angles, pitfalls and follow-on questions plus the 9-point self-scoring rubric are in the BTP Selection Pack (£24.99, 12 months), which also has SJT, video observation and interview practice. The 90-day Mock Interview pass (£39.99) opens them too.
Is my presentation recorded?
No. The timer runs in your browser and nothing you say is recorded or sent. Self-scores are kept in this browser only.
