Eligibility Requirements

Every published rule on who can apply to British Transport Police as a new police constable, in one place: age, right to work, residence, licence, qualifications and the experience routes, record, vetting history, finances, tattoos and business interests. Written only from BTP's own careers pages, live adverts and the PDFs attached to them, with a clear note wherever BTP's pages disagree or say nothing.

Short answer: can I join British Transport Police?

You can apply from 17 and a half (18 to attend the assessment centre and to start) with no upper age limit, if you have the permanent right to live and work in the UK without a visa and have lived here continuously for the last three years. Live adverts ask for Level 2 English and maths (or BTP's own tests) plus a Level 3 qualification or 12 to 24 months of named experience. Regional posts need a full UK driving licence. A custodial or suspended sentence, a vetting refusal in the last two years, dismissal from a police force, a current CCJ, an unmanaged IVA or a recent bankruptcy will stop you.

Every BTP Eligibility Rule at a Glance

British Transport Police (BTP) recruits new constables through its Police Constable Entry Programme (PCEP), which BTP's Inner London advert calls its "non-degree entry route for Police Officers". The rules below are the ones BTP publishes for that route. Most sit on its careers role page and its live adverts; a few only appear in the PDFs attached to adverts, such as the recruitment pack and the vetting tips sheet.

BTP's own pages do not always agree. Where they differ we give the newest wording first and say what the older page says, so you can check the advert you are applying to.

Quick Self-Check Before You Apply

Run through this list before you start the form. If you can tick every line, nothing in BTP's published rules stops you applying. If you cannot tick one, read that section below. This list is our summary of BTP's rules, not a BTP form.

  • I am at least 17 and a half. I will be 18 by the time of the assessment centre.
  • I have the permanent right to live and work in the UK without any restrictions and do not need a visa.
  • I have lived in the UK continuously for the three years immediately before applying (or my time abroad was with HM Forces or Government).
  • I hold a full UK driving licence, or I am applying for an Inner London post.
  • I hold Level 2 English and maths certificates, or I am ready to sit BTP's online English and maths assessments.
  • I hold a Level 3 qualification or one of the experience routes (12 months' policing experience in the last five years or 24 months in a listed role). I can evidence it.
  • If I am serving in HM Forces, I have 12 months or less to serve and proof of my discharge date.
  • I have never received a custodial sentence (suspended sentences included). I am not a registered sex offender.
  • I have not been refused vetting in the last two years by BTP, any other police force, the NCA, the CNC or the MOD.
  • I have not been dismissed from a police force and I am not under a live misconduct investigation.
  • I am not bankrupt, I have no current County Court Judgment and any IVA I have is managed.
  • I have not been unsuccessful in a BTP application, test or interview within the reapplication period on my advert.
  • I can list every caution, conviction (spent ones included) and tattoo honestly.
  • I do not hold another job for gain or run a business, or I have asked BTP how it would be treated.

Then check the advert itself. BTP recruits by location and each regional advert says: "We are only recruiting for the locations specified in this advert." Our open campaigns page lists every live advert and its closing date.

Age: Apply From 17 and a Half, No Upper Limit

BTP's FAQs say you can apply from 17 and a half and that "applicants must be 18 years old to start in role". Its recruitment pack adds that you cannot attend the assessment centre until you are 18. In practice that means:

  • At 17 and a half: you can submit the online application, which includes the situational judgement test.
  • At 18: you can attend the assessment centre (presentation, interview, fitness test, biometrics and uniform fitting).
  • At the start of training: you must be 18.
  • Upper age: none. BTP's role page says "BTP have removed any upper age restrictions for all roles."

If you apply young, check the dates. BTP does not publish how long each stage takes, so if your 18th birthday falls close to a likely assessment centre date, ask the recruitment team how they schedule applicants who are not yet 18.

Right to Work, Nationality and Visas

BTP's role page asks for "the permanent right to live and work in the UK without any restrictions". Its recruitment pack says BTP is "not able to support applications from those who require a Visa". BTP sets no separate nationality rule: the residence rule applies "regardless of nationality".

Right to work (BTP role page and recruitment pack, checked 23 October 2026)
Your statusWhat BTP's wording means for you
British or Irish citizenMeets the right to work rule. You still need three years' continuous UK residence.
EU or EEA citizenBTP's pack says UK, EU or EEA citizens automatically have this right. That is BTP's wording; it does not mention post-2021 immigration status, which may matter. Ask BTP to confirm your status counts as permanent and without restrictions.
Indefinite leave to remain or another permanent statusMatches the wording "permanent right to live and work in the UK without any restrictions".
Skilled Worker, student, graduate, family or any other time-limited visaDoes not meet the rule. BTP says it cannot support applications from those who require a visa.

If you are on a route to permanent status, the date it is granted is the earliest realistic date to apply. Use the time before then to prepare for the fitness test and the application stages.

Residence: Three Continuous Years in the UK

BTP's role page says you must have been "resident in the UK for the last 3 years". The current Inner London advert is tighter: you must have "lived continuously in the UK for the last three years immediately before application". BTP's recruitment pack adds two points:

  • Breaks are reviewed case by case. A gap year, a long trip or a period working abroad is not an automatic bar, but it is not automatically fine either.
  • Service abroad with HM Forces or Government is an exception. Time posted overseas in that service does not break your residence.
Why residence matters for vetting

BTP's vetting sheet says Recruitment Vetting needs "a full 3 years of UK address history". The three-year residence rule and that vetting need line up, which is why time abroad is looked at closely. If you have been outside the UK in the last three years for any reason other than HM Forces or Government service, ask BTP before you apply rather than after.

More on what vetting checks is in our BTP vetting guide.

Driving Licence: Essential Outside Inner London

BTP's FAQ says "Holding a valid full UK driving licence is essential for all outer London areas." Every regional constable advert we read on 23 October 2026 (B Division in the South East and C Division across the Midlands, the West and Wales) says a full UK licence is essential for all of its locations. The Inner London advert states no licence requirement.

Licence wording on BTP's live constable adverts (checked 23 October 2026)
AdvertLicence
Police Officer, Inner London (1736)No requirement stated
Police Officer, Basingstoke (1783)Full UK licence essential
Police Officer, Stevenage, Colchester, Southend, Brighton and Guildford (1746)Full UK licence essential
Police Officer, Truro, Swindon, Yeovil, Birmingham, Wolverhampton, Coventry, Milton Keynes and Leicester (1775)Full UK licence essential
Police Officer, Machynlleth (1778)Full UK licence essential

BTP does not say whether the licence must be manual or automatic. It does not publish a penalty points limit on the pages we read. If you hold an automatic licence, or have points, ask BTP before you apply. A provisional licence is not a full licence, so it does not meet the requirement on the regional adverts.

Qualifications: Level 2 Plus Level 3 or Experience

BTP's FAQ page still says "You don't need any qualifications to become a Police Officer". The live adverts say otherwise, so we follow the adverts. For PCEP in England and Wales you need both parts below.

Part 1: Level 2 English and maths

  • GCSE grade 4 (C) or above in English Language and Maths, or an accepted equivalent; or
  • a pass in BTP's own online English and maths assessments.

BTP's guidance says candidates without the certificates "will be required to undertake online English and Maths assessments". If you hold them, upload them and you skip that stage. See our online maths and English tests guide.

Part 2: Level 3 or experience

Either a Level 3 qualification, for which BTP gives examples such as two A levels at grades A to E, a BTEC National Diploma, an NVQ Level 3 or an Access to HE Diploma, or one of the experience routes in the next section. Evidence is required either way.

Scotland

For D Division (Scotland), BTP's role page asks for Level 2 maths and English: GCSE grade C or 4, Functional Skills Level 2, SCQF Level 5, Intermediate 2 or Standard Grade at credit level, or you take the tests. Other subjects are not accepted. There was no open new-recruit campaign for Scotland on 23 October 2026.

No degree needed

BTP's South East advert says: "You do not need a degree to apply and you will not be required to complete a degree as part of the programme." BTP did not offer a degree apprenticeship (PCDA) or a degree holder route (DHEP) on 23 October 2026.

The Experience Routes and HM Forces

If you do not hold a Level 3 qualification, BTP's adverts accept experience instead. There are two routes:

BTP experience routes (adverts 1746 and 1736, checked 23 October 2026)
RouteWhat countsHow long
Policing experienceSpecial Constable with independent patrol status, PCSO or police staff12 months, within the last five years
Other experienceArmed forces, emergency services, revenue protection, railway enforcement, rail incident response or service delivery management24 months
  • Specials need independent patrol status. Time as a Special before you reach independent patrol status is not named on the route.
  • PCSOs: BTP's Wales PCSO advert says completing PCSO probation "will also satisfy the work experience requirement" for PCEP.
  • Evidence is required. Keep contracts, service records or a letter from your employer showing dates and role.

Serving in HM Forces

BTP's role page says serving personnel can apply only if they have 12 months or less to serve, with proof of their discharge date. Once you leave, 24 months in the armed forces counts towards the experience route above. Service abroad does not break the three-year residence rule.

Criminal Record: What Bars You and What Is Case by Case

BTP publishes two firm bars and asks you to declare everything else:

  • Custodial sentence: you are not eligible if you have "ever received a custodial sentence, including a suspended sentence" (Inner London and South East adverts).
  • Sex offender registration: becoming a registered sex offender is a bar (BTP's vetting tips sheet).
  • Everything else: other cautions and convictions, including spent ones, must be declared and are reviewed case by case.
Declare spent matters too

Many people assume a spent caution can be left off. BTP asks for spent cautions and convictions to be declared and its role page says non-disclosure is treated as dishonesty, with a permanent bar from joining "in any capacity". A declared matter is judged on its merits. An undeclared one becomes a question about honesty.

BTP does not publish a list of offences that are automatically accepted or refused beyond the two bars above. If you have something on your record, our BTP vetting guide covers how to set it out clearly.

Vetting Refusals, Dismissal and Misconduct

Three rules cover your history with other police and security bodies:

History rules (BTP adverts, checked 23 October 2026)
RuleBTP's wordingSource
Previous vetting refusalNot eligible if declined or refused vetting "in the last two years by BTP or any other police force, NCA, CNC or MOD"Advert 1746
DismissalNot eligible if dismissed from a police force. The Inner London advert adds a law enforcement agency or public office.Adverts 1736 and 1746
Live misconduct investigationNot eligible while subject to a live misconduct investigationAdverts 1736 and 1746

The vetting refusal rule is wider than many applicants expect. It counts a refusal by any police force, the National Crime Agency, the Civil Nuclear Constabulary or the Ministry of Defence, not only by BTP. Count two years from the date of the refusal and declare it either way.

Finances: CCJs, IVAs, Bankruptcy and DROs

BTP's adverts say you are not eligible if you are bankrupt, have a County Court Judgment or have an "unmanaged Individual Voluntary Arrangement". Its vetting tips sheet says initial clearance is not granted with a current CCJ or with a bankruptcy or Debt Relief Order "satisfied within the last 3 years". The transferee pack gives "at least three years after the discharge" in one section and "not been discharged for at least five years" in another.

The safe reading

A current CCJ, an unmanaged IVA or a recent bankruptcy or DRO will stop you. BTP's documents give three years (and in one place five) since discharge. If you are between three and five years from discharge, ask BTP which figure it applies before you invest months in the process.

  • Ordinary debt such as a loan, car finance or a credit card you pay is not on BTP's published list.
  • A managed IVA is not named as a bar on the adverts. BTP does not define "managed", so keep proof that every payment is up to date.
  • Financial data is checked at vetting. BTP's vetting sheet lists it among the checks on you.

Tattoos: What Is Acceptable and What Is Reviewed

BTP's role page and FAQs set out which tattoos are fine and which are considered case by case. Its transferee pack says all tattoos must be declared on the application.

BTP tattoo guidance (role page, FAQs and transferee pack, checked 23 October 2026)
PlacementBTP's position
Hands, arms, legs and feetAcceptable
Back of the neck, discreetAcceptable
Behind the ear lobe; discreet ear tattoosAcceptable
Face tattoos from medical or cosmetic procedures (for example eyebrows)Considered
FaceCase by case
Front or side of the neck, above the collar lineCase by case
Large on the back of the neck and not easily coveredCase by case
Offensive, anywhere on the bodyCase by case

BTP does not publish what makes a tattoo offensive beyond the word itself. If you have one in a case-by-case position, take clear photos and a short description so you can answer questions quickly.

Business Interests and Associations

Business interests

BTP's role page says you would "not normally be eligible" if you hold another job for gain or run a business. The transferee pack says the rule also covers a relative living with you who keeps a shop in the force area, or a licence interest (a liquor licence, a betting and gaming licence or an entertainment licence).

BTP does not define "force area" on the pages we read and its officers work across England, Wales and Scotland. If you have a second job, a side business or a family member with a licence, raise it with BTP before you apply and declare it on the form.

Associations

BTP's role page says involvement with any group, society or individual that could represent a conflict of interest makes you ineligible. Its vetting sheet says police data and address history are checked for family, co-residents and associates, so this is not only about you.

Honesty, Social Media and the Use of AI

  • Honesty. BTP's role page: non-disclosure is treated as dishonesty and "you will be permanently barred from joining us in any capacity". This is the rule that turns a small matter into a lifetime problem.
  • Social media. BTP's vetting sheet says vetting asks for your social media URLs and only public content is viewed. Review what is public on your accounts before you apply.
  • Using AI. BTP's South East advert allows AI tools to generate ideas or structure answers, but adds "we want to hear your genuine voice". Write your answers yourself from your own experience.
  • Spelling and grammar. BTP's guidance says an application with "an unreasonable number of spelling or grammatical errors" will be unsuccessful. Not an eligibility rule, but it ends applications all the same. See our application form guide.

Where BTP's Rules Stand Apart

If you have looked at another force, these are the points where BTP's own wording tells you its process is separate. We compare only with what BTP itself says, not with any other force's rules.

BTP's own statements about its process (careers site, adverts and packs, checked 23 October 2026)
PointWhat BTP saysWhat it means for you
Selection process"As we operate a bespoke assessment process, scores are not transferable" from other forcesPassing another force's tests does not carry across. You sit BTP's own stages.
Entry routePCEP, a non-degree route. No PCDA or DHEP campaign was open on 23 October 2026.You will not study for a degree on the programme.
VettingBTP has its own vetting unit. Vetting from another force or employer: "Typically, no" it does not transfer.Expect to be vetted again even if you hold vetting elsewhere.
Vetting refusalsA refusal in the last two years by any police force, the NCA, the CNC or the MOD bars youA refusal elsewhere counts at BTP too.

Any debt rules you outThe bars named are bankruptcy, a CCJ, an unmanaged IVA and a recent DRO. Ordinary debt is not on BTP's list.

If You Are Unsure: What to Do Next

Our suggested order, built from what BTP offers applicants:

  1. Read the live advert for your location. The Inner London adverts carry the current rules, including the three-month reapplication period and the Level 3 or experience requirement.
  2. Read BTP's careers FAQs. Bear in mind some FAQ answers are older than the adverts (qualifications and reapplying).
  3. Join an online Q&A session. BTP listed these on 23 October 2026: Friday 6 November 2026, 10:00 to 11:00; Wednesday 18 November 2026, 19:00 to 20:00; Monday 30 November 2026, 12:30 to 13:30.
  4. Contact BTP recruitment through its careers site with your specific question, such as a residence gap, an automatic licence or a business interest. Write down the answer, who gave it and the date.
  5. Apply to other forces as well if you want to. BTP's FAQ allows it. Withdraw from the other force once you accept an offer.
  6. Start preparing for the stages you control: the situational judgement test, the video assessment, the presentation and interview and the 5.4 bleep test.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Relying on the FAQ line that no qualifications are needed. The adverts say otherwise.
  • Applying for a location on a regional advert without a full UK licence.
  • Leaving off a spent caution or a tattoo. Non-disclosure can mean a permanent bar.
  • Applying as a Special before you have independent patrol status and 12 months' experience, if you have no Level 3.
  • Counting the two-year vetting refusal window from the wrong date.
  • Submitting answers written by an AI tool. BTP wants your genuine voice.
  • Missing the closing date. BTP says there are no extensions "for any reason" and some campaigns may close early.
  • Resigning from your job after a conditional offer. BTP's FAQ says not to resign until the formal offer.

BTP's FAQ says feedback is only given to candidates who attended an interview. If you are unsuccessful earlier, the reapplication period on your advert applies (three months on the current adverts; six months on older BTP pages).

What We Could Not Verify

BTP's published pages do not settle the following, so we have not stated a rule. Ask BTP recruitment.

  • Whether the driving licence must be manual, whether any penalty points limit applies and whether Inner London posts need a licence at all.
  • Whether the five-year window named for the 12-month policing experience route also applies to the 24-month route.
  • How BTP treats EU or EEA citizens' post-2021 immigration status under "permanent right to live and work".
  • How long a break in UK residence can be before it counts against you.
  • Whether three or five years since a bankruptcy or DRO discharge is applied (BTP's documents give both).
  • Which reapplication period applies to your campaign if the advert is silent (three months on current adverts, six on older pages).
  • What makes an IVA "managed" in BTP's view.
  • What makes a tattoo "offensive" beyond the word itself.
Quick answers

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I join British Transport Police?

You can apply if you are at least 17 and a half, have the permanent right to live and work in the UK without restrictions, have lived in the UK continuously for the three years before you apply and meet the qualification rule on the advert: Level 2 English and maths (or BTP's own tests) plus a Level 3 qualification or a set amount of relevant experience. Regional adverts also need a full UK driving licence. A custodial or suspended sentence, a recent vetting refusal, dismissal from a police force or certain financial problems will stop you.

What is the minimum age to join BTP?

You can apply from 17 and a half. BTP's recruitment pack says you cannot attend the assessment centre until you are 18 and its FAQs say you must be 18 to start in the role.

Is there an upper age limit for British Transport Police?

No. BTP says it has removed any upper age restrictions for all roles.

Does BTP sponsor visas?

No. BTP's recruitment pack says it is not able to support applications from those who require a visa. You need the permanent right to live and work in the UK without any restrictions.

Do I need qualifications to join BTP?

BTP's pages disagree. Its FAQ says you don't need any qualifications, but the live constable adverts ask for Level 2 English and maths (or a pass in BTP's own assessment) plus either a Level 3 qualification or 12 months' policing experience in the last five years or 24 months in roles such as the armed forces, emergency services, revenue protection or railway enforcement. Follow the advert you are applying to.

Do I need a driving licence to join BTP?

For most posts, yes. BTP's FAQ says a valid full UK driving licence is essential for all outer London areas and every regional constable advert we read says the same for its locations. The Inner London advert states no licence requirement. BTP does not say whether the licence must be manual.

How long do I need to have lived in the UK?

Three years. BTP's adverts say you must have lived continuously in the UK for the last three years immediately before application. Breaks are reviewed case by case and serving abroad with HM Forces or Government is an exception.

Can I join BTP with a criminal record?

It depends what it is. You are not eligible if you have ever received a custodial sentence, including a suspended sentence, or if you are a registered sex offender. Other cautions and convictions, including spent ones, must be declared and are reviewed case by case. Not declaring something is treated as dishonesty and can mean a permanent bar.

Can I join BTP with debt?

Ordinary debt is not on BTP's list. The adverts say you are not eligible if you are bankrupt, have a County Court Judgment or have an unmanaged Individual Voluntary Arrangement. BTP's vetting sheet adds that a bankruptcy or Debt Relief Order satisfied within the last three years stops initial clearance; one BTP document says five years.

Can I join BTP with tattoos?

Yes in most cases. Tattoos on the hands, arms, legs and feet are acceptable, as are discreet tattoos on the back of the neck or behind the ear lobe. Tattoos on the face, on the front or side of the neck above the collar, large ones on the back of the neck or offensive ones anywhere are considered case by case. Declare every tattoo on the application.

How long must I wait to reapply to BTP?

BTP's current adverts give a three-month reapplication period after an unsuccessful application, test or interview. Its FAQ page and older recruitment pack say six months. Check the advert you are applying to.

Can I apply to BTP and another force at the same time?

Yes. BTP's FAQ says you can apply to other forces at the same time and asks you to withdraw from the other force once you receive an offer.
