Independent information, not advice · Sources checked 23 October 2026 · England and Wales
BTP PCSO pay is £29,483.96 rising year on year to £33,012.03 in 2026/27, plus a shift allowance of up to 20% (at least 15% once you finish 8 weeks' training) and £4,775 a year in Inner London. BTP pays every four weeks. You get 28 days' leave rising to 30 after five years and a Royal London defined contribution pension, not the officers' fund. BTP PCSOs are trained and equipped with handcuffs, train for 8 weeks in London plus 4 weeks on area and serve a one-year probation. Roles are in England and Wales only. Completing probation meets the experience requirement for BTP's constable programme.

What a BTP PCSO Does
Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs) are uniformed police staff who support warranted officers. At British Transport Police (BTP) they work on the railway network in England and Wales. BTP's PCSO page and its adverts do not set out a full list of a BTP PCSO's powers or duties, so we do not list them here.
Handcuffs
BTP's Wales PCSO advert says BTP PCSOs are trained and equipped with handcuffs, "Unlike PCSOs in many Home Office police forces". In Home Office forces, whether PCSOs are issued handcuffs is a local decision after a risk assessment, as our PCSO role and powers guide explains.
For the general legal framework for PCSOs in England and Wales, that guide is the place to start. BTP's own pages are the authority on what BTP PCSOs do.
BTP PCSO Pay 2026/27
BTP's PCSO page and adverts give 2026/27 pay of £29,483.96 to start, "rising year-on-year to a maximum of £33,012.03". That is spine points 2 to 7. BTP has published only the two ends for 2026/27; the October 2025 recruitment pack gives the whole 2025/26 spine.
| Spine point | 2025/26 (recruitment pack) | 2026/27 (PCSO page and adverts) |
|---|---|---|
| 2 (start) | £28,486.92 | £29,483.96 |
| 3 | £29,281.76 | Not published by BTP |
| 4 | £30,076.60 | Not published by BTP |
| 5 | £30,305.98 | Not published by BTP |
| 6 | £31,100.82 | Not published by BTP |
| 7 (top) | £31,895.68 | £33,012.03 |
Both published 2026/27 figures are 3.5% above the 2025/26 start and top, to the penny (our arithmetic). BTP has not published the 2026/27 figures for points 3 to 6, so we have not calculated them. BTP describes pay as rising year on year; it does not say what governs progression.
Compare this with PCSO pay in Home Office forces in our PCSO pay guide.
Shift Allowance and Inner London Allowance
- Shift allowance: up to 20%. "A minimum of 15% shift allowance will be received upon completion of 8 weeks training."
- Inner London allowance: £4,775 a year in 2026/27 (2025/26: £4,613.61).
Illustration: what the allowances could add
BTP does not say what the shift allowance percentage is calculated on, or whether it is paid during the first 8 weeks. The table assumes it is a percentage of basic salary only. Your contract is the authority.
| Example (invented) | Basic salary | Inner London allowance | Shift allowance (assumed % of basic) | Gross a year | Gross per four weeks (divided by 13) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Start of scale, outside London, 15% shift allowance | £29,483.96 | None | £4,422.59 | £33,906.55 | £2,608.20 |
| Start of scale, Inner London, 15% shift allowance | £29,483.96 | £4,775.00 | £4,422.59 | £38,681.55 | £2,975.50 |
| Start of scale, Inner London, 20% shift allowance | £29,483.96 | £4,775.00 | £5,896.79 | £40,155.75 | £3,088.90 |
| Top of scale, outside London, 20% shift allowance | £33,012.03 | None | £6,602.41 | £39,614.44 | £3,047.26 |
| Top of scale, Inner London, 20% shift allowance | £33,012.03 | £4,775.00 | £6,602.41 | £44,389.44 | £3,414.57 |
These are gross figures before income tax, National Insurance and pension contributions. BTP does not publish the PCSO pension contribution rate.
Paid Every Four Weeks
BTP's transferee pack says "BTP employees are paid every four weeks in arrears", within seven days of the end of each four-week period. That means 13 pay days a year, not 12.
- A starting basic salary of £29,483.96 is £2,268.00 gross per four-week period, against £2,457.00 if it were paid monthly (our arithmetic).
- Pay days move through the calendar. One month a year has two of them.
- Your first pay arrives in arrears, after your first four-week period.
Plan monthly bills around the gap between pay days, especially in your first weeks.
Annual Leave and Rail Travel
| Service | Annual leave (BTP PCSO page) |
|---|---|
| Under two years | 28 days |
| After five years | 30 days |
BTP's PCSO page gives these two points. It does not say whether leave changes between two and five years' service; ask BTP.
On rail travel, BTP's FAQ says officers, Specials and PCSOs get free or reduced-rate rail travel for residential purposes. BTP's statement about free National Rail travel on duty names police officers and Special Constables; its pages do not say the same for PCSOs, so check with BTP.
Pension: Royal London, Not the Officer Fund
PCSOs are police staff, so they do not join the officers' BTP Force Superannuation Fund. BTP's recruitment pack, its PCSO adverts and BTPA's 2021 staff pension consultation say:
- Staff joining from 1 April 2021 are in the "BTP Group Personal Pension Plan", a defined contribution scheme run by Royal London.
- Older staff are in the BTP Shared Cost Section of the Railways Pension Scheme.
A defined contribution plan builds a pot. What you retire with depends on how much you and BTP pay in and how the investments perform, not on a guaranteed formula. BTP does not publish the member or employer contribution rates on the pages we read.
PCSOs employed by a chief constable or police and crime commissioner in England and Wales are eligible for the Local Government Pension Scheme, a career average scheme, as our PCSO pension guide explains. A BTP PCSO's pension works differently. If you move to BTP as a constable, you join the officers' fund instead: see the BTP pension scheme guide.
England and Wales Only
BTP's PCSO page says: "PCSO roles are only available in England and Wales." BTP polices the railway in Scotland too, but it does not recruit PCSOs there.
Adverts are by location. When we checked, BTP was advertising PCSO roles in Inner London, in South Wales (Welsh essential) and in North Wales (Bangor and Rhyl). For Wales, BTP says its assessment centres are held at the British Transport Police office in Cardiff.
BTP PCSO Adverts Open Now
The status column is worked out when this page is built (24 October 2026), so an advert whose closing date has passed shows as closed after the next rebuild.
| Advert (links to BTP) | Closing date as BTP writes it | Status when built (24 October 2026) | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| PCSO, Cardiff, Newport, Pontypridd and Swansea (English and Welsh adverts) | Midnight on 24 October 2026 | Open | Welsh language: essential |
| PCSO, Bangor and Rhyl (English and Welsh adverts) | 24 October 2026 | Open | None |
| PCSO, Inner London | No closing date | Open | £29,483.96 plus £4,775 London allowance |
| Transferee PCSO (nationwide) | 31 October 2026 | Open | Serving substantive PCSOs |
The Cardiff, Newport, Pontypridd and Swansea PCSO advert (English and Welsh versions) has the field "Welsh Language Required?" set to Essential. BTP also lists English and Welsh adverts for Bangor and Rhyl.
Every BTP advert, for officers, PCSOs and Specials, is on our open campaigns page.
Who Can Apply
BTP's recruitment pack covers constables, PCSOs and Specials together. What BTP publishes that applies to PCSO applicants:
- Age: apply from 17 and a half; you must be 18 to start (FAQs). BTP says it has removed upper age limits for all roles.
- Reapplying: the Wales PCSO advert bars anyone unsuccessful for a Police Officer, Special Constable or PCSO role who has not finished the three-month reapplication period. Older BTP pages say six months.
- Welsh: essential for the South Wales advert.
- Medical and vetting: part of the pre-employment checks. See BTP medical standards and BTP vetting.
BTP's rules on residence, criminal records, finances and previous vetting refusals are set out most fully on its constable adverts. Check the PCSO advert you apply to and our BTP eligibility guide.
The Selection Process, Stage by Stage
BTP's PCSO page describes a process with the same shape as the constable process. BTP calls its selection "bespoke", so scores from other forces do not carry across.
| Stage | What happens | Source |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Online application | Includes an application question and a situational judgement test (SJT) | PCSO page; role page |
| 2. Online ability tests | Maths and English, unless you upload qualifying Level 2 certificates | PCSO page; role page |
| 3. Video assessment | Watch a short clip, then write factual information about what you observed | PCSO page; role page |
| 4. Assessment centre | A presentation and interview and the 5.4 bleep test. Welsh applicants: held at BTP's office in Cardiff | PCSO page; advert 1771 |
| 5. Conditional offer | Then pre-employment checks: vetting, references and the medical | Role page; guidance page |
| 6. Formal offer | After the checks | Guidance page; FAQs |
| 7. Training | 8 weeks in London, then 4 weeks on area with a tutor PCSO | PCSO page |
BTP does not publish the SJT, test or video assessment formats, the presentation topic or pass marks. Our stage guides explain what is known:
Training and Probation
- 8 weeks of initial training in London. The shift allowance minimum of 15% starts once you complete these 8 weeks.
- 4 weeks on area with a tutor PCSO.
- A one-year probation (BTP FAQs).
| When (from your start date) | What happens | Pay points to note |
|---|---|---|
| Weeks 1 to 8 | Initial training in London | Basic salary; BTP does not say when a PCSO's Inner London allowance starts |
| Weeks 9 to 12 | On area with a tutor PCSO | Shift allowance of at least 15% from completing the 8 weeks |
| To the end of month 12 | Probation | Shift allowance of up to 20% |
| After probation | Probation complete | Meets the experience requirement for BTP's constable programme |
| After five years | Annual leave reaches 30 days |
BTP's PCSO pages do not say where in London the training is held or whether accommodation is provided for PCSO trainees. For Welsh PCSOs travelling to London, ask before you accept an offer.
Transferee PCSOs
BTP runs a nationwide Transferee PCSO advert for serving substantive PCSOs in other forces. It had a closing date of 31 October 2026 when we checked and was open when this page was built.
The facts we hold do not say whether transferee PCSOs keep their pay point, how training is shortened or what probation applies. Ask BTP. For officers, BTP keeps basic salary and increment date on transfer: see the BTP transferee guide.
From BTP PCSO to Constable
BTP's Wales PCSO advert says completing PCSO probation "will also satisfy the work experience requirement" for the Police Constable Entry Programme (PCEP).
PCEP in England and Wales needs Level 2 English and maths (or BTP's own assessment) plus either a Level 3 qualification or experience. One accepted form of experience is 12 months' policing experience in the last five years as a PCSO, a Special with independent patrol status or police staff. A BTP PCSO who completes the one-year probation meets that.
You still apply to a constable campaign and go through BTP's constable selection. Constables start on £33,609 in 2026/27. See the how to join BTP hub and the general PCSO to police officer guide.
BTP PCSO vs Home Office PCSO
Only points that are published on both sides. The Home Office column comes from our own PCSO guides, which cite their sources.
| BTP PCSO | PCSO in a Home Office force (England and Wales) | |
|---|---|---|
| Employer | British Transport Police | A chief constable or police and crime commissioner |
| Handcuffs | Trained and equipped with handcuffs | A local decision after risk assessment; the College of Policing handbook says protective equipment is not expected as a matter of course (our PCSO powers guide) |
| Pension | BTP Group Personal Pension Plan (Royal London, defined contribution) for staff joining from 1 April 2021 | Eligible for the Local Government Pension Scheme, a career average scheme (our PCSO pension guide) |
| Where | Railway stations and the network in England and Wales | The force's own area |
| Pay frequency | Every four weeks | See our PCSO pay guide |
| Route to constable | PCSO probation meets BTP's PCEP experience requirement | Varies by force: see our PCSO to police officer guide |
How to Prepare, Step by Step
Our suggested order, built around BTP's published stages. It is not a BTP requirement.
- Pick the advert that matches where you live and check its closing date and language requirement.
- Find your Level 2 English and maths certificates. Uploading them means you skip the online tests.
- Practise situational judgement scenarios before you start, because the SJT sits inside the application.
- Write your application answer offline, check spelling and grammar, then paste it in. Explain why BTP and why the railway.
- Practise observing and writing: watch a short clip, then write down what you saw, factually and in order.
- Train for level 5.4 on a marked 15-metre course with the beeps.
- Prepare a presentation structure and competency examples and practise both out loud.
- Learn the basics of BTP: its divisions, the stations near you and how BTP PCSOs differ from Home Office PCSOs.
- Plan for 8 weeks in London if you live outside it. Budget for four-weekly pay.
Free tools: the 15m bleep test simulator and the police mock interview.
