Short answer: where will BTP post me?

BTP recruits by location, so your posting starts with the campaign you apply to: each advert names its stations and BTP only recruits for those. You set a posting preference on the application, can add more at conditional offer and cannot change it after the formal offer; relocation is at your own expense. BTP has five divisions: A (support, HQ in Camden Town), B (London and the South East), C (Midlands, North, Wales and West), D (Scotland) and E (specialist operations).

BTP divisions and postings at a glance

  • Five divisions: A (support), B (London and the South East), C (the largest), D (Scotland) and E (specialist operations).
  • Location-led recruitment: each campaign names its stations; BTP says it is only recruiting for the locations in the advert.
  • Posting preference: set at application, more can be added at conditional offer, fixed once the formal offer is made.
  • No relocation package: moving for a posting is at your own expense.
  • Pay by place: £9,044.75 of allowances in Inner London; £3,105, £2,000 or £1,000 at some South East stations; none elsewhere.
  • Scotland: D Division covers 359 stations from the borders to Thurso; no new-recruit campaign open on 23 October 2026.
Why this matters before you apply

With most forces you apply to the force and are posted later. With BTP you apply to a campaign for named locations, so choosing the campaign is choosing where you will work. Read this page before you pick one.

Where BTP officers can act

BTP is a national force for the railways of England, Wales and Scotland. Under section 31 of the Railways and Transport Safety Act 2003, BTP constables have police powers on the railway and throughout Great Britain for railway-connected purposes. BTP's work in Scotland is carried out under Scots law.

In practice BTP's divisions are built around the rail network rather than county boundaries. B Division, for example, includes London Underground, the DLR and Tramlink as well as the main line railway, so a BTP posting is usually described by station or hub.

The five BTP divisions

BTP's careers site lists five divisions. Here is each one with its hubs and whether it had a new-recruit constable campaign open on 23 October 2026:

B, C and D Divisions are the geographic divisions where new constables are posted. A Division is force-wide support and E Division holds specialist teams, which BTP says are open only after the two-year probation.

B Division: London and the South East

B Division covers London and the South East, including London Underground, the DLR, the Emirates cable car and Tramlink. BTP names three hubs: Waterloo, Victoria and Kings Cross St Pancras. The Specials advert calls it "B Division (London & South)".

B Division is where BTP's two London allowances apply, for officers stationed within 16 miles of Charing Cross. On 23 October 2026 three new-recruit campaigns covered B Division: Inner London, Basingstoke and the Stevenage, Colchester, Southend, Brighton and Guildford campaign.

BTP's part-time page also describes a part-time work pattern of at least 20 hours a week at four B Division London locations: Kings Cross, Victoria, Finsbury Park and Albany House. No part-time constable vacancy was open on 23 October 2026.

C Division: Midlands, North, Wales and West

BTP calls C Division its largest. It has four sub-divisions (Pennine, Midland, Western and Wales) and three hubs: Birmingham, Leeds and Manchester. The Specials advert's heading covers the Midlands, the North, Wales and the West.

On 23 October 2026 two new-recruit campaigns covered C Division: one for Truro, Swindon, Yeovil, Birmingham, Wolverhampton, Coventry, Milton Keynes and Leicester and one for Machynlleth in mid Wales. Milton Keynes pays the £3,105 South East Allowance; BTP names no location allowance for the other towns.

The North West and North East

No new-recruit campaign for the North West or North East was open on 23 October 2026. Serving officers should check the transferee adverts listed further down this page.

D Division: Scotland

D Division covers Scotland "from the borders to Thurso", including 359 railway stations, according to BTP's locations page. Officers work under Scots law.

  • Training: a two-year Modern Apprenticeship leading to an SCQF Level 7 Certificate in Policing, starting with 12 weeks at the Scottish Police College, then 4 weeks of local training.
  • Accommodation: BTP's pack says the Scotland course is residential, with accommodation provided.
  • Location pay: none on BTP's allowances sheet.
  • Recruiting now: no new-recruit campaign for Scotland was open on 23 October 2026.

If you want to police Scotland's railways, watch BTP's vacancies portal and see our BTP training guide for the Scotland route. Police Scotland is a separate force with its own process: see our Police Scotland recruitment guides.

The station lists BTP publishes

BTP does not publish a full list of officer stations on its recruitment pages. The fullest list it does publish is on its Special Constables advert, which names Specials postings by division:

Special Constable postings by division (BTP advert 1720). Specials postings only: not a full list of officer stations

These are Specials postings

This list tells you where BTP places Special Constables. It is a useful map of where BTP has a base, but it is not a full list of officer stations and it does not mean every location recruits new constables. New constable postings are named on each campaign advert.

The Inner London constable advert names these example postings, again not a full list: King's Cross, Euston, Waterloo, Clapham Junction, Stratford, West Ham, Wembley and Croydon.

Where new recruits are posted

BTP runs its constable campaigns by location. Each regional advert says: "We are only recruiting for the locations specified in this advert." These were the new-recruit campaigns on BTP's vacancies portal on 23 October 2026, with status worked out when this page was last built:

BTP can close a campaign early if it receives a high volume of applications, so check the advert itself. Our BTP campaigns page lists every open advert, including transferees, PCSOs and Specials.

On the Inner London campaign BTP says: "specific postings cannot be guaranteed, home location will be considered wherever operationally possible". So even inside a campaign, your exact station is not promised.

Each campaign town by division and allowance

Putting BTP's adverts and its 2025/26 allowances sheet together, here is every town on a current new-recruit campaign with its division and location allowance:

Posting preference rules

BTP's recruitment pack sets out when you can influence your posting. The key point is the last one: once the formal offer is made, the posting is fixed.

Pay by location

The basic salary is the same everywhere: £33,609 on point 2 for a new recruit. Your station decides the allowance on top. BTP pays every four weeks, 13 times a year, so here is each location as a four-weekly gross figure too:

Training accommodation depends on your division

England and Wales recruits train at BTP's training centre in London. Whether BTP provides somewhere to stay depends on where you will be posted, according to BTP's recruitment pack:

Accommodation during initial training by division (BTP recruitment pack, October 2025)
Where you will be postedAccommodation during initial training in LondonSource
B Division, Inner London"Accommodation is not available"BTP recruitment pack

C DivisionArranged for the required in-person weeks in LondonBTP recruitment pack
D Division (Scotland)Residential course at the Scottish Police College, accommodation providedBTP recruitment pack; role page

So an Inner London recruit commutes to training from home, while a C Division recruit from Truro or Leicester has accommodation arranged for the in-person weeks. See BTP training.

Wales and the Welsh language

Wales sits in C Division as its own sub-division. BTP's Wales adverts carry a "Welsh Language Required?" field and are published in English and Welsh:

  • Police Officer, Machynlleth (advert 1778, Welsh version 1779): Welsh desirable.
  • PCSO, Cardiff, Newport, Pontypridd and Swansea (advert 1771): Welsh essential.
  • PCSO, Bangor and Rhyl: English and Welsh adverts on the portal.

The Wales PCSO advert also says assessment centres for Welsh applicants are "held at the British Transport Police office in Cardiff". BTP does not say whether the same applies to every Wales constable campaign, so check your invitation.

Driving licences and shifts by location

Whether you need a full UK driving licence depends on where you will work:

BTP officers work "12 hour rotating shifts, with varying start and finish times" and occasional last-minute changes. BTP's transferees page says shift patterns "differ from station to station", so ask about the pattern at the stations on your campaign.

How big BTP is

The BTP Authority's annual report for the year to 31 March 2026 gives these figures:

BTP workforce (BTPA Annual Report and Accounts 2025/26)
Measure (BTPA Annual Report 2025/26)Figure
Average permanent employees in 2025/26 (officers and staff combined)4,810
Average Special Constables in 2025/26221
Ethnic minority officers11.5%
Female officers22.9%
Officer-only headcountNot given separately in the report

The 4,810 figure combines officers and police staff, so it is not the number of officers. The report does not break numbers down by division either. Treat these as a picture of the whole force, not a guide to where vacancies are.

Two figures are about officers specifically: 11.5% of officers are from an ethnic minority and 22.9% are female. The report also gives an average of 221 Special Constables. BTP's Specials advert lists their postings, shown in the station lists above. If you want to see BTP from the inside before applying as a constable, our BTP Special Constables guide explains that route.

Choosing where to apply

BTP does not publish advice on choosing a campaign, so these are our suggestions built from its published rules. The aim is a posting you would happily keep, because you cannot change it after the formal offer.

  • Commute at shift times. 12-hour rotating shifts mean early starts and late finishes. Time the journey at those hours.
  • Use the rail concession. BTP offers home-to-work rail travel of 70 miles free in London and the South East or 8 miles elsewhere, at the Rail Delivery Group's discretion.
  • Price the move. Relocation is at your own expense; Inner London recruits get no training accommodation.
  • Check the licence rule. Every current regional campaign requires a full UK licence.
  • Do not apply to the wrong campaign hoping to move. BTP recruits only for the locations each advert names.

Five example applicants

How BTP's posting rules apply to different applicants (PolicePay examples)
ApplicantWhat BTP's published rules mean for them
Lives in south London, no carThe Inner London campaign has no licence requirement on its advert and pays £9,044.75 of allowances from day one. Training is in London, but BTP says accommodation is not available for Inner London postings, so you will commute from home.
Lives near Reading, wants to stay localReading is a top-tier South East station on BTP's 2025/26 sheet, but no current new-recruit campaign covers it. Watch the vacancies portal rather than applying to a campaign elsewhere and hoping to move.
Lives in BirminghamBirmingham is in the current C Division campaign and is a C Division hub. No location allowance applies. BTP arranges accommodation for C Division recruits during the in-person training weeks in London.
Lives in GlasgowD Division covers Scotland, but no new-recruit campaign was open on 23 October 2026. Scotland recruits train at the Scottish Police College, not in London.
Welsh speaker in mid WalesThe Machynlleth advert lists Welsh as desirable. The Wales PCSO advert says Welsh applicants' assessment centres are held at BTP's Cardiff office; BTP does not say whether that applies to constable campaigns.

Postings for transferees and re-joiners

Serving officers from a Home Office force, Police Scotland or PSNI apply through separate transferee adverts, also by location. On 23 October 2026 these were listed:

BTP transferee and re-joiner adverts (BTP vacancies portal, read 23 October 2026)

The London and the South East advert lists Inner London, Maidstone, Ashford, Colchester, Southend, Stevenage, Luton, Brighton, Guildford, Croydon and Southampton. Transferees do a 4-week induction at the London training centre and BTP's transferee pack asks for 12 months' tenure before moving roles. See our BTP transferee guide.

Questions to ask BTP about postings

  • Which stations does this campaign cover, beyond the ones named on the advert?
  • How are postings decided when more candidates prefer a station than it has places?
  • What shift pattern runs at the station I am likely to be posted to?
  • For Outer London postings, how often is training accommodation granted?
  • After probation, how do officers move station or division?

BTP runs online recruitment Q&A sessions; the dates are on our BTP campaigns page.

What we could not verify

  • A full list of BTP officer stations: BTP does not publish one on its recruitment pages.
  • How postings are decided between candidates on the same campaign.
  • Officer-only headcount and officer numbers per division (the annual report combines officers and staff).
  • The address of the London training centre.
  • How often Outer London training accommodation requests are granted.
  • Whether Welsh constable applicants are always assessed in Cardiff (stated only on a PCSO advert).
  • How and when officers move station or division after probation.
  • The D Division hubs (not named on BTP's locations page).
Quick answers

Frequently Asked Questions

How many divisions does British Transport Police have?

Five. A Division is force-wide support with headquarters in Camden Town, London. B Division is London and the South East. C Division is the largest, with Pennine, Midland, Western and Wales sub-divisions. D Division is Scotland. E Division is specialist operations.

What are the BTP hubs?

BTP's locations page names Waterloo, Victoria and Kings Cross St Pancras as B Division hubs and Birmingham, Leeds and Manchester as C Division hubs.

Can I choose where BTP posts me?

Partly. BTP recruits by location, so you choose a campaign that covers where you want to work. You set your posting preference on the application and can add more at conditional offer. BTP says specific postings cannot be guaranteed and that there is no option to change your posting location once a formal offer has been made.

Does BTP pay relocation costs?

No. BTP's recruitment pack says relocation is at your own expense.

Which stations does BTP have?

BTP does not publish a full list of officer stations on its recruitment pages. Its Special Constables advert lists Specials postings by division and the Inner London advert names example postings such as King's Cross, Euston, Waterloo, Clapham Junction, Stratford, West Ham, Wembley and Croydon.

Does BTP cover Scotland?

Yes. D Division covers Scotland from the borders to Thurso, including 359 railway stations. BTP officers in Scotland work under Scots law and new recruits train at the Scottish Police College. No new-recruit campaign for Scotland was open on 23 October 2026.

Where can BTP officers use their powers?

Under section 31 of the Railways and Transport Safety Act 2003, BTP constables have police powers on the railway and throughout Great Britain for railway-connected purposes.

Do I need to speak Welsh to join BTP in Wales?

It depends on the advert. The Machynlleth police officer advert lists Welsh as desirable. The Cardiff, Newport, Pontypridd and Swansea PCSO advert lists it as essential. Check the Welsh Language Required field on the advert you apply for.

How many officers does BTP have?

The BTP Authority's 2025/26 annual report gives an average of 4,810 permanent employees (officers and staff combined) and 221 Special Constables. It does not give an officer-only figure.

Do BTP officers get London Weighting everywhere?

No. Only officers stationed within 16 miles of Charing Cross get the Inner London allowances (£9,044.75 in 2026/27). Some South East stations pay £3,105, £2,000 or £1,000. Elsewhere there is no location allowance.

Disclaimer

PolicePay.co.uk is an independent guide. It is not affiliated with British Transport Police, the British Transport Police Authority, the BTP Force Superannuation Fund, Railpen or the College of Policing. It does not recruit, test or assess applicants. Our practice questions and scenarios are original PolicePay material, not BTP's own. BTP runs its own selection process and changes it. Its own pages sometimes disagree, so check the live advert and BTP's careers site before relying on anything here. Details are as checked on 23 October 2026.
